Does anyone actually use a laptop anymore?

The last two office jobs I had used laptops exclusively. Its a lot more convenient for when you want to work from ho- *closes window due to boomer screeching loudly* for when you want to work from home.

We are at the point where most people can get away with their phone to do whatever they need it to. But I like a laptop for the huge screen, keyboard, and most importantly, a full fledged OS. We have arrived at Steve Jobs' cars vs trucks analogy, and in this case I am a truck fan.

I only have a laptop because my job issued me one for work. They also gave me a dock, so I've got it hooked up to a pair of big monitors at my desk. It's really no different from a desktop in that sense. I do like the laptop form factor so I can throw it in my bag if I have to travel. It's nice to be able to deal with emails, check bank accounts, etc. with a bigger screen, mouse and keyboard.

If I didn't have a job that relied on using a computer and I didn't travel, I don't think I would ever buy a laptop. I can use my phone for simple things and my desktop for gaming and anything that is better navigated with a mouse and keyboard.

Agreed with everything.

Every day. Either using as is or connected to a keyboard and a 24' monitor when at home/work.
Perfection!
I could never "work" on a tablet or a phone.
Also because I only play old games or 2d indie games my laptop act as my gaming pc.

I couldnt work or even live without a laptop. I don't understand how you guys prefer a tiny screen instead of a laptop screen, let alone how comfy it is to type on a keyboard. The only advantage is touch screen, everything else is worse.
But.. but 'laptop screen' is the tiny screen I avoid by using a desktop. Heck I even ended up buying an external monitor solely for use with my laptop when I'm visiting my mom that I just left there.

What a weird thread, laptops are used by everyone everywhere
Yes and no. Plenty of MacBooks out there today sure... but 15-20 years ago girls in my age range who otherwise would never touch a computer were all over laptops for MySpace and later Facebook... even YouTube. A lot of those people who would have had a laptop then have shifted to smartphone-only over the years.

There was probably some shift from desktop to laptop as well, but I don't know that it really made up the difference.

I use two laptops. A company supplied laptop that I use exclusively for work, and a personal M3 MacBook Pro which I use more than anything since I travel a lot.

I have a Chromebook for when I need it. But I have been using a iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, mouse, Apple Pencil. Since 2021. It does everything I need it to mostly.

Sometimes, I come across things I need the laptop for, I use the Chromebook.

Apple TV box, and iPad Pro are my most used electronic devices. Even more than the phone now.

I think the only people who use desktops at home are PC gamers who are into it (I casually game on a gaming laptop) and old people like my dad who can barely use a computer to begin with. He'd literally drop dead if he had to use a laptop with a tiny screen and keyboard.

I havent had a desktop since maybe 2006 or 2007.

I have a desktop, laptop, and smartphone.

Desktop is strictly for gaming.
Laptop is everything, except gaming.
Smartphone is for on-the-go media viewing/listening and communication, of course.

They each have their uses.

Laptops have essentially replaced desktops in most use cases.

The better question would have been if anyone still uses desktops.

Nothing drives me nuts more than when my son comes to me, asks why he can't see something on his phone, I ask him if he checked his laptop and he says No. Seriously, it drives me f'ing nuts. Phones still don't display many websites correctly. People expect a tiny ass screen to not have formatting issues?

On my ThinkPad T420 from 2011; it has an i5-2450M, maxed out 16gb DDR3, 400nit FHD IPS display, runs fedora 42, debian 12, Win10 IoT Enterprise LTSC like a dream. The keyboard on this thing will never be topped as far as laptops go.

I have 2 but they are docked on my desk 99% of the time. When I'm on the couch or in bed I'm on my phone. I can't stand tablets. I've bought an iPad Pro 2 different times and returned them within a couple days both times.

I find it crazy that I haven't used my laptop at all in years. In the mid to late 2000s, and probably even a bit later, it felt like everyone I knew had laptops and used them frequently. That obviously started declining with tablets / ipads and just smartphones in general. And a lot of people use desktop PCs for gaming etc.

So does anyone still use a laptop regularly, or has it been sat in a cupboard somewhere gathering dust?
The only use I have for a tablet is reading fixed-layout documents like PDF. Can't imagine getting any work done on such a thing. So the answer is: of course I use a laptop, both at work and at home.

I don't use a tablet. Never have done. It's just because I've got my gaming PC I either use that or my phone if I'm just needing to look some shit up. I probably could have worded my whole post better, but oh well.

I used to swear by (customizing) gaming desktops, but since I moved to a decent gaming laptop a few years ago I don't see myself returning to desktop. It's powerful enough to run the games I want to play, it's easy to move around for watching Netflix/YT in living room or on the bed, plus I needed a laptop for DJ gigs. Also, a big plus is having an extra screen as I put it up on a stand next to one of my monitors.

I use a laptop for many things. At home it's hooked up to a monitor but I use it when I go places.

I have a Starlabs StarBook Mk V running Coreboot for bios and Linux Mint for OS.
