Anyone broken their shoulder before?

Hey all,

I guess I am just after a bit of positivity at the moment. Back in September, I fell down some steps and put my shoulder through a metal railing which resulted in:
- Dislocating the shoulder
- Relocated my shoulder to behind me
- Broke my shoulder
- Tore my rotator cuff off

I had the shoulder xrayed and put back in, then xrayed again and discharged. They didn't pick up on the broken shoulder, and even after 2 days when the radiologist notified them that it was broken, no one contacted me. I was in pain for 10 days before going back to the hospital to say there's something wrong, to which they said all was normal and again, missed the note about it needing operating on urgently.

I went for physio mid October where I was asked "Did you know you have a broken shoulder?" - another xray showed it had become displaced now and the rotator cuff was detached. Queue being put on the trauma list for surgery, which was 31st October.

Anyway, it was operated on and 6 months later, I am still in a lot of pain and movement is still limited to 90 degrees. I'm having physio every 2 weeks but it doesn't feel like it is helping as much :/

Has anyone else been through this and how were you in the end? I was told by the consultant, expect a 2+ year recovery and even then, I may have limited motion.

Dunno anything about shoulder injuries, I broke my collarbone when I was a kid and that sucked.
Have you talked to a malpractice attorney? Sounds like you have a case there.
That's ongoing at the moment - got a letter from the hospital outlining 5 instances of mistakes they made from the head consultant dismissing the injury, to trainees not giving information to consultants... to whole ER department not reading notes. A lawyer has said that this should be an easy open and shut claim as they admitted blame already.

I have only recently been cleared to drive again. I still can't do things like change a lightbulb, hold shopping using that arm, mow lawns etc :/

Take them to the cleaners, that is a pretty bad fuck up on their end, in multiple areas that led to a significantly worse recovery scenario for you.
Best of luck and a speedy recovery. Dealing with the courts sucks, but I imagine they’ll settle since it seems pretty open and shut.

I didn't even know I had a rotator cuff. Anyway I hope you get better, but be patient. A Chinese once said to me after I had fractured my finger that there's a saying in his country that goes something like "a bone takes a year to heal". So it's probably healing all the time, but it takes time.

No bullshit - Take physical therapy as seriously as possible and don't let up. It is critical for your strength, range of motion and posture.
Thanks - I am doing it a lot (and more) but they've said to not push myself too hard at the moment. At the moment, I am using a lot of passive movement as active movement isn't great.

How old are you and how good of shape are you already in? That’ll definitely affect your recovery.

Like other people said, take physical therapy VERY seriously. Tell your therapist you want to do the most to regain as much functionality as possible.

This is definitely the type of injury that follows you around for the rest of your life if you don’t service it appropriately now.

I've separated my right shoulder in a fight before.
Definitely not a fun experience, but nowhere near as awful as breaking your back. 🫨

Never broken, but I’ve had rotator cuff issues in both shoulders for years now. No matter how strong you think you are, a good shoulder injury will reduce you to feeling weak as shit. The worst part is finding a comfortable way to sleep. Good luck if you’re a side sleeper.

Shoulder injuries are no joke and if yours is as severe as you say, you definitely need to keep up with physical therapy so it strengthens and heals back to as close to normal as possible.

I've had surgery for a torn rotator cuff and bursa damage, mine was internally bleeding and I couldn't move my right arm.

Recovery for me was well over a year of constant regular physio, PT gym sessions to gently strengthen my shoulder over time and more than one round of steroids injections.

I had to use one of these ice/compression things every morning

You will regain most but not all strength in your shoulder, wish I could tell you its going to be 100% but the fact is you are going to live with this injury for the rest of your life.
