Anyone else find watching sports incredibly boring?

The worst thing about sports are the people who think they're somehow smarter because they can sit there and watch nothing happen.

Not any worst than people being self-righteous and dismissing whole sports because they personally don't enjoy it.

Out of curiosity, aren't you the guy who thought that college sports should be abolished? And voted for his school's team not to move into D1?

No, college football and basketball only. And yes I voted against D1.

I'm not into watching team sports. Football bores the hell out of me, and crowd noise has the same effect that rain/white noise has on me (as in, it puts me to sleep).

However I do like watching snowboarding, surfing and mountain biking events, but that's most likely because I do those myself.

Half back passes to center, back to wing, back to center! Center holds it! Holds it! Holds it!!

But no I love watching Football (real football not Gridiron)

The main problem with sports these day though - not enough Vuvuzelas

please, if you're in front of your computer when your team is playing you're not a real fan.

What is this? I don't even....

There is something called a laptop, a portable computer...technology has advanced yo'
I think you better sit-down for this news, some guys on GAF post from their smartphones...*GASP*

Not everyone sits in front of a monitor/desk to reads/type on GAF
Even if they do, you can have a TV right next to them or close by

Also

NCAA Football is fun when rivalries show up (hate bowl games and that stupid BCS)
NCAA Basketball is fun when rivalries show up. NCAA Tournament "The Big Dance" is fucking amazing for 2 weeks it's shown, upsets and bracket breakers are amazing

Football is the best. Baseball and basketball are usually only good in playoffs. Everything else is boring, with soccer being the most offensive.

Hey I still follow baseball a bit I just don't watch it until the ALCS and World Series. I'm a Yanks fan so right now it's just wasting time until the real games start and watching Boston struggle for their choking lives just to get in :P

Every sport with the slightest bit of popularity has redeeming qualities. They all have those dramatic, unbelievable moments that I love to revisit every now and then. That, to me, is what sports are all about.

I can enjoy watching sports.

But I'll never get into being a "sports fan", ala rooting for a particular team.. analyzing the game, or players, rattling on about stats etc.

I like to put it in terms of going to a concert to see a really good band. There is something really compelling about seeing people who have practiced long and hard for a specific moment go ahead and step up and perform their craft and either succeed or fail. And there are things to appreciate in the details of even the boring moments. I feel like people tend to have similar levels of fandom and craziness in both sports and music too.

If you don't like sports and you don't like music though, then may god have mercy on your soul. (or apply the same irrationality to sony vs microsoft or whatever)

To weigh in on baseball:

From April through September, I do not give a single fuck about it. The season is way too goddamn long. 162 games is ludicrous. Throw in the 25 or so spring training games and its ungodly long. No sport needs Almost 200 games in order to determine what teams are worthy of making the playoffs. So obviously, I do not have a team I root for since I don't watch.

However, all that changes for the month of October. There is something so incredible about playoff baseball. The intensity can be absolutely incredible, and when its a series like the Yankees vs the Red Sox, you can be guaranteed of some moments you won't forget.
Yanks vs Red Sox is pretty much the reason why non fans think baseball is so boring. There's so much wasted time in those games, even I can't stand to watch them sometimes.

I don't watch sports at all, if there's something big on like the World Cup I may place a small bet and check out my (randomly chosen) team though.

I can't stand Cricket at all

It just feels so mundane to me

Like a mix of Golf & Baseball had a baby

I love watching American Football and on occasion I like watching the Wild play.

This is going to sound goofy but I am kind of thankful for the constant breaks in the average NFL game. When I watch hockey I always feel like I'm going to have a heart attack because of how fast and continuous it is.

Baseball, soccer and golf = Yes
All other sports = Hell no

(That includes curling.)

Ironically, despite being boring as a sport, TV shows/movies/anime/manga about baseball are typically AMAZING.

If by "sport" you mean "NBA" yes.

Note, only NBA. Random FIBA tourneys and NCAA basketball are geneally awesome.
Absolutely nothing is as electric as March Madness.
As for the NBA, it would be tons better if the league wasn't marred by crooked officiating.

I seriously can´t stomach sports on TV. There is only one exception, the FIFA World Cup which I love watching, but thankfully that´s only once every 4 years.

I love sports more than anything, even the shitty ones. Soccer is my favorite thing in the world after recorded music

Don't really get the intense love for college sports, though. I go to my school's hockey games occasionally but I wouldn't care if they were abolished and we had youth leagues instead

edit: also I've been really into F1 lately, such a cool sport. Why Americans prefer Nascar, I'll never know.

baseball is like golf is not a sport, but a game.

i take that back, a game implies that it should be fun.
baseball is as much as fun watching a snail race.

Every. Single. Weekend.

Stuck at the inlaws, reading my Kindle like a nerd on their back porch by the pool while they're huddled around the 50 inch plasma watching some football game. I feel like an outcast, with my brother in law and all his douchebag topless male friends lounging out with Bud Lights as the game plays and there I am, but what am I going to do?

I've tried to get into sports, literally TRIED to get into them, for 32 years and they never stuck.

Well it depends on the sport. Baseball, for example, is incredibly boring.

Pretty much this.

My list:

NFL - Love it.
NBA - Somewhat...I'll watch special games or ones I know will be good. Will watch the playoffs though.
MLB - Don't care for it normally. Playoffs...I may watch a game or two.
Tennis - Sometimes I'll watch it, but I don't normally.
Hockey - Don't care.
Soccer - Depends on who's playing. I like the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup games.
Auto racing - Nope.
Golf - Nope x2.
College Sports - Don't care normally. Will watch exceptional games.

I only watch NBA, MLB, and the NFL. I don't watch college sports cause I didn't go to sports school so it's harder to watch when you don't have a team to root for.

I've never understood the appeal of watching sports.

It's like porn. Why watch someone else having when you could just go out and do it yourself (even if not at quite the same level of achievement)?

It seems such a pointless and demeaning experience.

Most of the game is actually between plays. Once you have an understanding of play calling American football (NFL) becomes the most exciting sport...

I stopped dating a really cute girl because she was too into sports. I can watch a live game, and get really into it with crowd, but I find following a team and being a fan, a pretty pointless endeavor.

To each his own though...

I'm sure a greater investment on my part would mean more payoff. There's undoubtedly a reason nearly all my friends drool over the season starting. Although I think part of that is the obsession with betting on the games.

I read somewhere that there's around 11 minutes of actual play per NFL game, which sounds about right and just doesn't cut it for my attention span.

The "why watch people do something when you can do it yourself" has to be one of the worst and most overused arguments in history.

As for people who cannot stand certain sports, I think they would develop at least a mild appreciation for them if they saw some amazing moments. I used to absolutely hate baseball and think it was boring as hell, but then I saw the Red Sox come back against the Yankees down 3-0 in the series, bloody sock and all.

I only enjoy watching Basketball, and only during the playoffs, when my preferred team is playing.

Sports are a pretty huge waste of time, and comporable to video gaming in terms of money required to sustain the hobby.

depends, I find American Football extremely boring. There are nuances to the sport and stuff that goes over my head most likely, but the amount of interruptions just kill it for me.

Sports are a pretty huge waste of time, and comporable to video gaming in terms of money required to sustain the hobby.
are you serious? watching my team play doesn't even require the amount of time or money a video game requires... it's not even comparable.

i love watching playoffs.. regular season games mostly bore me

i agree with a lot of the comments itt about football.. it's pretty baffling how popular it is to me.

I used to be bored to death by sports. Them I started going to them. With the right team and the right crowd almost any game can be amazing. You can almost feel the electricity in the the air. Sharks games are the best games EVER!

Hey there! I'm hoping to go to a Sharks game sometime in the future. Freaking hockey games are amazing to watch, especially in the playoffs. OP, if you don't like watching sports, then watching hockey live will probably end up being your exception, once you try it out.

I enjoyed it (basketball and football) while at college, but now I'm not into it anymore. I've always preferred playing over watching, although I suck at sports.

Hockey > whatever you like

If this were the 80s or early 90s, I'd agree. The NHL isn't what it was. Scoring is down, fighting is little more now than a dumb, unnecessary sideshow between useless goons who do nothing but fight, and a lot of talented Eastern European players opt for the KHL these days, weakening the NHL talent pool.

NFL > NHL >>>> the rest

Yes. All sports have varying degrees of enjoyment. But my god, baseball is never enjoyable. ZZZZzzzzz

Love watching mma and basketball. Can't stand soccer.

Love the Olympics. Pretty much when the Olympics are on, it's the only thing I watch.

baseball is enjoyable if you are big on stats, nearly everything in baseball has a stat behind it.

i just never got into sports, since the only sport my dad marginally cared about was football/soccer and he didn't even watch it that often. i never played any sports as a kid, either, since my parents never motivated me to and i didn't excel naturally (was chubby as a kid). i have way too many forms to entertain myself already, so i have no reason to invest any time to learn about a particular sport.

tl;dr i'm a nerd

It's not argument, I assume no one's trying to change anyone's mind here.

It's the best way I can explain the utter and complete disinterest I have in watching sports (or taking part in any vicarious activity).

Playing it is fine but listening to people talking about the abstract minutiae of a game or team it always seems to me that the appeal is much more social and tribal than it is actually wanting to watch anyone running around.
