Anyone else not fetishize Dogs & Cats?

Alright, maybe "fetish" is too strong a word, but really, the concept of allowing an animal into your home, letting it dictate a significant portion of your life, from cleaning up to feeding to medical care to it destroying your property. I've had a variety of pets over my life of course like anyone, but at my ripe age I've come to a conclusion that it's something of a collective delusion, that we let these animals into our homes, cater to their every fucking need, and worst of all, anthropomorphize them into some avatar of "this creature loves me no matter what" - not *cough* judging anyone who needs a companion who will 'love' them no matter what they do, because that's not at all creepy. So I've been living at a place the last 8 years that has a strict no pets policy which has allowed me a convenient excuse for my kids' requests and this had been a boon. Well, my daughter had rats a couple years ago that flew under the radar, but their disturbing and untimely demises only further reinforced my policy that pets are strictly for suckers and kids who don't know any better. For y'all that actually live on a farm or some shit where animals serve a purpose, this does not apply.

Hmm, a historical asset, but has it outlived its usefulness? Become a parade of fucked up genetic selections and dog-show freaks.

If you've ever had a dog and couldn't honestly say that it loved you... well that just reflects badly on you sir.

I reject this because that feeling of love is so imagined and subjective. Is subservience and an eagerness to please "love" now? Maybe your definition of Love reflects badly on you.

i don't know about cats but if you're living alone & u have a badas$ dog to watch ur back in case some1 tries to break in then i can see the benefit of owning one especially if ur a small weakas$ chick, small dogs though are easier to take care and can also sound the alarms if something weird is going down. basically guard dogs r sweet & non-guard dogs r hella cute I love my family's small blonde cockerspaniel pets can make good company

Cats and dogs are better than most humans.

And cats are actually really low maintenance, doesn't dictate much of your life at all. Dogs I can understand not wanting that much commitment if you've got other stuff goin on.

OPs still upset his parents didn't get him a puppy for Christmas. This is decades of festering resentment and justifications bubbling to the surface.

I work with a group of people who are obsessed with their dogs. It's all they talk about. Their dog did this funny thing, what foods do they give their dog etc etc. They talk about their dogs like they are their children and the conversations go on for hours while I just sit there trying to do my job and ignore their shit about dogs. Their whole personality is that they own dogs and like dogs and talk about dogs and have to leave early or come in late...because dogs. It's mind boggling.

If I'm away with work my missus says that my cat sleeps on my pillow all night and my clothes all day, then when I'm home she comes and sits in my arms for hours. I'm guessing she despises me.

The disdain is almost palpable in the OP and his replies - like how does one get to that point? So much anger and venom, even condescension towards people who like pets "pets are for suckers". The need to create this OP in the first place to give a vent to the brewing emotion, what caused all this I wonder.

Dogs are needy and easy to satisfy and have no complications which is why white people worship them. Every so often it comes up on GAF.

I have a cat and I baby it a bit but it had a rough life living on the streets before I took it in, now it's a spoilt little bastard. Stray cats is okay but not stray dogs. 🤷‍♂️

Nah. Dogs are awesome, and we underestimate animals' abilities/qualities in general. If anything we tend to idealize human beings too much.

Cat and dog people are weird. Animals stink, shit all over, cover your house in hair or fur, make noise, cost money and are a huge pain in the arse. Cat's shit everywhere except their owners garden and dogs are a pain in the arse for everyone.

No, I don't want to come to your house to eat dog-hair covered dinner or drink furball-tea, thank you very much.

The Koreans have the right idea.

I'd never have an animal in my house. It's pretty gross.

Where I live (UK), dogs are worshipped. You can't walk anywhere without stepping on dog shit. They are fucking everywhere.

If you say that you don't like dogs, people look at you like you are the devil. It's getting worse and worse, to the point that I've started calling them all "Dog fuckers" because they are so obsessed.

OP makes some good points, unpopular ones, but good points.

That said, I feel like the post misses the actual love and bond that can develop between you and an animal. There are no doubt some people/pet relationships that are largely based on superficialities and conveniences, but the ones where something truly special develops, are a wonderful part of life.

Dems some good boys right there.

As for the OP to each their own, but I generally prefer dogs to people.

Nothing grosser than seeing someone coated in the pets hair. One big reason why I don't want an animal. I know they have breeds that shed very little, but not worth it.

I don't know for dogs, but cats are pretty low maintanance.
My cat also serves a purpose. She keeps my feet warm in bed. I've trained her to sleep on my feet.

I always find it funny that people give dogs a pass for their "unconditional" love. They've evolved in crafty ways to get their needs met. They're no less self-serving than any other living organism, despite surface appearances.

Edit: And I like dogs (and cats) fwiw.

I thought the same thing till I ended up owning an English Bully. I know, a prime example of what you're talking about but I nursed him back to health after being overfed, ignored, curing an infection on his tail pocket that lasted way too long, among other things. The dog is now loyal to a fault to me and it's weird!

Bro did you just finish philosophy class or something?

Have no pets myself and hate the idea of keeping a animal locked inside a house all day ( not to keen of cleaning up the smell, poop, pee, fur and the damage the do scratching and chewing stuff up ).
I do see people benifeting from animal companionship but it's almost like having a kid and requires a lot of commitment and time.

Bitter asshole finds letting an animal into your home and devoting a portion of your life to it creepy. Considers pet owners suckers.

Has kids instead.

What an idiot.

i don't have kids so i have a cat. i know, i'm a horrible person who cut off this thing's balls and keeps him trapped in the 5th floor of an apartment. but on the other hand i have had a number of cats previously and they all died by either being killed by area animals or run over by cars. so i know that this isn't a safe environment for him in any way and that he's still better off living with me than dealing w all kinds of stuff.

i don't fetishize him but the companionship that he provides is undeniable. on a cold day, just having a warm body that hangs around with you can do wonders for the psyche. when i am sick, my cat spends more time near me, which puts me in a better mood. maybe this is "delusion" to the OP but quite frankly it is objective reality that life seeks out life and we are comforted by knowing we are not alone.

being cut off and alienated is what is anti human. note how even in a prison, when surrounded by rapists and murderers, the worst punishment is Solitary Confinement. even in that context, being alone is still seen as torture.

if you have kids i can see animals as being sort of unnecessary. tho kids tend to love puppies/kitties so if i ever had kids i'd probably let them get an animal. do what you want. i would just advise against armchair psycho analyzing millions of people or calling them deluded for not wanting to be alone.

Dogs stink, cats smell like French fries for some team. They also Bury their own shit. If you see a cat shit then chances are it's a fox shit.

Also if you can't have empathy and a bond with another species you're probably seriously shit at relationships with your own.

How do you figure sports fan?

I would say women aren't another species but that's not entirely true :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Besides, you can't fuck dogs or cats to keep them in line, not without getting bitten and or scratched...so i've been told.

You fuck people to keep in line?
Weird way of doing things, " stop that or I'll fuck you!"
