Finally got around to seeing this. Have wanted to for some time because I really liked About Schmidt. I was prepared to be depressed because of how depressing About Schmidt was (Dear Ndugu), but I didn't find it to be quite as depressing. It has the same sense of feeling lost and empty at some point in one's life, but I think because this movie was about coming to grips with fully entering middle-age years instead of pre-kick-the-bucket years like in About Schmidt, it wasn't nearly as depressing. Particularly because of the ending, it leaves you with more of a sense that no matter how shitty, empty or meaningless your life has been up to this point, good things can still come to you.
I really liked this movie. Made me think about life, and it was pretty funny as well. The scene where Jack woke up to Miles running towards the car as the fat chick's naked husband was chasing after him with his penis flapping in the air was fucking hilarious.
Anyway, I feel sorry for people who don't "get" the movie, like my sister (if you do get it and didn't like it, that's another thing and I respect that). She saw it and told me she didn't like it; "it was just about wine and stuff....boring". As Roger Ebert once said, "Movies aren't about what they're about -- they're about how they're about it".
