flown in premium cabins a lot for work, there is a world of difference between premium long haul and internal US flights which I think of as flying busses, even in the premium cabins.
on BA long haul difference between biz and first:
- on either you never wait, first has its own row of chk in desks and most of them are empty, then straight to fast track through security, once through security the concorde room is directly on your right about 5 foot away so you don't have to mingle with common people at all
- first you get a better lounge, concorde room at LHR T5, booze is better than the crappy business class lounges. It is nicer, less people, the booze is better. There is also a sit down ALC restaurant, just sit there pigging out you can order whatever you want for no extra. You can also get a private room with a bed in it to chill out. Also one spa treatment is included. If you get access to a decent lounge, arrive at the airport half a day early and rinse it.
- on the plane, when you get to the door and they clock you're in first, they lead you to your seat personally.
- bigger seat, bigger TV, I am 6,2 and can stretch out fine. If you want to sleep tell a steward and they will make your bed, put down a little mattress, duvet, pillow while you change into your free pjs.
- food is better but most plane food is crap. Multicourse meal served on plates with real metal cutlery. Personal service, they use your name all the time. At the end of the meal they give you a box of high end chocs tell you to help yourself and then pass it round the rest of the first class cabin.
- the big difference is the booze. First time I wasn't planning to drink. Then I clocked the booze. Quality is very good, vintage champagne, very good wines, high end spirits. Anyone with a moderate interest in booze should plan to get completely wasted. I go for the lot, champagne pre take off, keep drinking champagne till meal (you should be able to get at least 200 bucks down your neck with a bit of effort) - then rinse a different wine with each course - you like the wine? Drink more. Finish with a vintage tawny port with the cheese, then linger over a cognac or armagnac till its time to hit the scotch. You should drink till you pass out.
- I think it's genuinely lovely and am always disappointed when it's time to land. In cattle class its a nightmare but first is genuinely relaxing and if you need to work when you land you don't feel like hammered shit (tho you prob won't be able to drink as much if you need to work straight off the plane)
- the worst thing is when you don't travel first you are disappointed, disappointed in business class which also costs thousands. It fucks everything else up.
The cost for all this finery? Return ticket to the US from England can blow well past £10,000 easily for a flight thats around a grand in cattle class / £4-5k in business class. Thats a lot of booze you need to neck to make that worthwhile. And I hope to god you're not paying for it personally unless you are completely minted.
