Anyone here into techno/trance/electronica/dance music?

Ferry Corsten is the business... His music is so... damn good. I don't know what else to say about it. It rocks. My fav track off his latest is "Rock Your Body, Rock," are his other albums as good as "Right of Way?"

Oh yeah, Basement Jaxx is well good too, Kish Kash being my favorite of their albums. Daft Punk is great too. I liked "Discovery," and "Daft Club"

Based on that, can anyone give me reccomendations for more artists, albums or tracks? Thanks in advance!

These are all artists I recommend:

- The Latin Project (Latin-style house)
- Mouse on Mars (if you like Kish Kash, definitely get "Radical Connector")
- Total Science (very funky drum & bass - not all of their tracks are keepers but they have SO MANY songs & remixes out there, you're bound to find something you like)
- Prefuse 73 (glitch-hop champion)
- Dabrye (a nice companion to Prefuse 73)
- Autechre (look for their old stuff, like "Tri Repeate ++" or "Amber" before getting their new stuff)

Ferry Corsten is awesome. It's too bad he's really the only huge name trance DJ to try a new style of trance, which is some sort of fusion of trance and electro-ish sounds. His older stuff is more epic and anthemic trance than the stuff you'll find on Right of Way.

Anyways, I'll recomend to you Gabriel and Dresden's 2 CD Bloom as G&D's stuff is really easy to get into. And if you can fid it, download there essential mix from Radio 1. It's the set that really put them on the map and its filled with some classics.

Props on the Dabrye recommendation.

Thanks! After hearing "Uprock & Invigatorate" on Prefuse's One Word Extinguisher and seeing that it was co-produced by Dabyre, I knew I had to check out his shit!

Hey, my fellow 'Jukie: did you know that El-P and Ghostface are going to collaborate on a Prefuse track? Jesus Christ, that's going to be awesome!

He also produces as James T. Cotton... released a fine album called "The Dancing Box" last year. Also as SK-1 teaming up with Soundmurderer. Check out http://www.rewind-records.com for some nasty old skool style ragga jungle. The whole catalogue is free on mp3.

Osborn is also some nice tunes... Ghostly is a fine label.
El-P and Ghostface on Prefuse? good lord, that should be killer.

Given the kind of stuff you listed, I'd strongly recommmend that you preview some tracks from the artists people recommended first -- many of them can be sampled on iTunes or Amazon. Although there have been some outstanding artists mentioned, I'm not sure how closely they line up with what you like.

You definitely need the first two Basement Jaxx albums: Remedy and Rooty are terrific. Daft Club is a TERRIBLE album, but their first (Homework) is genius, and a must-buy.

If you like trance, pick up a trance mix from Paul Oakenfold (I'm a fan of his old Global Underground 002: New York mix, but it may be impossible to find at this point) or a CD from Paul Van Dyk. You might also like some progressive breaks: Way Out West (artist, especially their album Intensify), Nick Warren (DJ, Global Underground 024: Reykjavik is HIGHLY recommended), Deepsky, etc.

I'd also recommend Sasha's recent Involver very highly -- it's a nice hybrid between a DJ album and a remix project, and it was one of the best mixes of last year.

Yeah the more I think about it, I don't know how much TCB would like what I said. But definitely pick up that Mouse on Mars record, it's a lot like the stuff Basement Jaxx are doing.

I haven't heard the James T. Cotton record but I'm definitely feelin' the Soundmurder stuff!

Pick up a copy of Jeff Mills: Live at the Liquid Room. The real shit, forget those white boy poser DJ's concerned with little else aside from $$$ and how good they look.

You recommended good stuff -- he ought to check them all out, especially the godly Prefuse 73, but it might be two steps away from where he's at now, rather than one.

I have Remedy, and Rooty. I like them both, but I really liked some of the vocals and the production on Kish Kash. I have the Daft Punk discography, and I am most partial to Discovery. I liked Daft Club a lot. Most of the tracks are worth listening to, IMO, which is pretty rare for a remix album, I really liked the acoustic "One More Time" mix. BUT I will give the other albums a re-listen. There are a few classic tracks on them. But thanks for the reccomendations, people. I will check out all of these.

Look for the acoustic version of "Romeo", too. It's dope.

Electronic love, finally. Kind of sad, but I haven't really heard of most of the artists listed so far (except for Basement Jaxx & Daft Punk) being fairly new to it all, so it looks like I've got some homework cut out for me. I've just been prying into more and more downtempo stuff as I go.

If you want some great upbeat stuff, I'd highly recommend DJ Dan. In particular, In Stereo and Mixed Live are among my top picks, but his newest album, Accelerate, is good stuff too. He definitely deviates a bit from his traditional style on that one. If you want more downtempo stuff, the Hotel Costes and Saint Germain (not the artist, but the compilation set) are both great, with the latter being more of nu-jazz, and Mr Scruff and DJ Shadow are both great in their own respective manners.

As a mere curiousity question, where do you guys typically get your music? Amazon's been great for a lot of this stuff, and eBay can be beneficial as well, but on the whole, most online stores I find charge an arm and a leg for electronic music, presumably because they're not on the Top 40 Billboard charts or something. As far as B&M stores, being in Austin, Waterloo Records is the only place I know of that has anything resembling CD selection these days. Any recommendations or pointers not only on artists of any type to check out let alone where to buy CDs, would be overly welcome.

Enhanced 56K modem beeps with looped sound samples does not fall under the category "music".

You need actual instruments for that.

At least, that's the argument I use against the trance fanboys at college :p

This was asked on another forum I post on, here is a list of people from my collection...

Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, Juno Reactor, Plaid, Dzihan & Kamien, Fila Brazilla, Hybrid (not the early linkin park), The Dining Rooms, Tosca, Zero 7, Nortec Collective, Mum, Morcheeba, Mint Royale, Four Tet, Boards of Canada, Koop, The Cinematic Orchestra, Underworld, Amon Tobin, Mr Scruff, DJ Shadow, Goldfrapp (their first album), Mujaji, The Wiseguys, Saru, Nuspirit Helsinki

That list has a lot of variety. There's more but check those out first, and there is a reason I put Bonobo first.

I liked Bonobo's earlier stuff, like "Deconstructing Frank" and "The Sicilian", but their latest stuff is just tedious.

Uh, point taken, check out The Chemical Brothers. The Singles is certainly a good album to begin with, but I'm particularly fond of the Surrender album and Come With Us. But from someone who has all their albums, I can safely say, they're all sheer gold. I need to dig up some of their non-album work like B-sides, but that can come after I check out some of the other artists listed here. Also, just to let anyone interested know, they have a new album due out I believe next month, and a clip from the new single, Galvanize w/Mos Def, is available off iTunes. They also just redid their site: http://www.thechemicalbrothers.com/.

So yeah, Chem. Bros. == great.

I absolutely love listening to dance music now, I have the dance music channel playing in the background damn near all day now. I love that "give me the moneyshot" mix, reminds me of that laundromat from Postal 2. :lol

I love electronica to death too. Right now though, I'm trying to find more crazy, classic ambient sounding stuff like this. MHTRTC

Nowadays I listen to a lot of progressive (trance). If you like that, try searching for Marcus Schulz, if you like it a little bit more trancey, try Armin van Buuren. There's also an excellent internet radio station: ETN.FM. Plays live sets and essential mixes 24 hours a day. They also have a lot of bittorrent downloads there, and yes, the downloads are legal, de DJ's know about it. :)
