Anyone interested in Jan hardware?

Relative to anything else, Xbox 360 hardware and individual software performed well. I can't believe the number of posts to the contrary.

Yeah, it's probably never going to be "Runaway Momentum", but that's not what the Xbox platform was built on anyway.

Lack of demand isn't the problem. It's the inability to meet demand that's killing them. I simply expect demand for the 360 to take a big hit once the PS3 date is set and the hype begins to build. Now's their chance to really move some systems and build a lead. They're blowing it.

"The handheld market is almost the perfect market situation at the moment. Two different systems with different capabilities, both doing well, with entirely different software catalogs."

very good comment. they are BOTH doing perfectly fine. so everyone better deal with it because i can't see either of them going away.

Strong 360 software performance = :O

Oh and PSP soft > DS...barely...hooray? Maybe we'll see something interesting with the glut of great PSP titles in Feb and (especially) March.

"Building a lead" is irrelevant. Unless the gaming industry warps into some alternate dimension, the PS3 is going to outsell it.

How many units did the PS2 sell in its first year?
A year and a half?
2 years?

Whatever those numbers are, they were sufficient by themselves to outsell the Gamecube and Xbox.

The Xbox 360 was never expected to create an insurmountable lead of consoles relative to the PS3.

They're both extremely succesful. Some analysts and fanboys are annoyed by that fact, but that's just because they're idiots and/or have an emotional (or financial) agenda.

If they didn't care to build momentum, why did they bother launching first? Why make public statements about the significance of having a head start?

I don't doubt the PS3 will sell very well, but the status quo doesn't always hold, either. It's a new generation, and everyone's starting fresh. MS made their play first, and they stumbled out of the gate. They can still right themselves, but their head start advantage is all but erased.

PSP outsold DS for the month of January despite Nintendogs, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing. In hardware and software. Looking at software numbers PSP software numbers are ahead of DS software numbers for the month with these blockbusters included. Not sure what more Sony needs to accomplish, outselling the market leader in both hardware and software for the month despite the competition having some blockbuster sellers would be considered OK in my book.
Inversely, a new handheld PlayStation with a brand new exclusive GTA, console level Madden/Winning Eleven/sports games and near full hollywood support of mainstream film releases is barely outselling a handheld N64 who's main "blockbuster" is a virtual dog you get to walk and play frisbee with. In America, in hardware or software. Always good to put some perspective on things... what happens when "real" blockbusters like Mario, Tetris and Pokemon show up?

Awesome SOCOM at 14. That game rox. I don't care what anyone says, it's the best handheld shooter to date. (maybe until MP:Hunters)

Has anybody posted this yet?
Sega of America today reported continued strong sales of its Dreamcast game consoles, but trouble may still loom for the company.

Sega said 1.55 million of the devices were sold by the end of 1999 in the United States. Such sales would seem to answer critics who wonder if the company's newest console would sell in foreign markets after floundering initially in Japan. U.S. sales reached the 1.5 million mark in about three and a half months, compared to 1 million units sold in four months after the launch in Japan.

But with the company continuing to lose money and products from Sony and Nintendo expected later this year that will leapfrog the 128-bit chip in the Dreamcast system, analysts still aren't certain the company will fully recover from its past mistakes. Sony, in particular, has been pushing the benefits of its upcoming PlayStation 2.

Thats a damn strong performance from Nintendogs. I wonder how much it actually sold? Surely less than the DS hardware for the month? Still, the top 3 DS games are over 300K(seeing as Mario Kart and Animal Crossing are over 88K each), must be the typical story where the rest of the library lags whereas the psp sees more consistent sales throughout its library of games. NFS is also doing poor, ps2 version is down 38% compared to last year. I wander when/if Sony will cut the price on the ps2? Maybe in a couple of months just when the 360 is getting into a decent situation in terms of stock levels?
i agree.

nintendogs success is amazing. the best selling game of jan (6 months after launch) and over 100k for 6 consecutive months! very few games manage this, let alone a new ip on a console with a ~4 million user base.

:lol :lol I love these threads.

The DS would sell like hot cakes if there were Nintendogs Bundles everywhere. Shit, NOA should die. Look whats doing those dogs in Europe, they're taking the continent by storm and no one can't stop them.

Meanwhile NOA does nothing to solve this problem PSP can enjoy selling more systems than DS, but things are gona change very soon, with tetris online, New super Mario Bros and the Brain Training series... DS is gonna outsell like in Japan.
