Anyone know much about Lasik?

I had Lasik surgery performed last thursday. My prescription beforehand was about -4.5 -- So, very poor vision without glasses. I wouldn't have been able to read anything on the chart.

On the day of the surgery, I couldn't see much at all, and it felt like I had sand in my eyes. The following day I was able to see functionally -- About 20/40, and with a bit of double vision, especially in the right eye (which I'm told has to do with my astigmatism). During the day after checkup, the doctor told me it would probably be good within about a week.

Five days later I had no progress, and, in fact, it got a little worse. I had another follow up and they said to give it time, and that it may take several weeks.

At this point it's been 8 days since the surgery, and still no improvement from the day after. Again, if anything, it's a little worse (from the day after -- make no mistake, my "naked" vision is still a lot better than what it was pre-surgery). In my current state it's very difficult to read the monitor from normal reading distances, and doing my work (art/animation) is quite hard. In addition to blur, I'm still getting a bit of "cloudiness". Bright lights/whites kind of wash out and bleed into other things. Looks "gaussy".

I will continue to follow the doctors and do what they recommend, but I must say I'm getting a little anxious. I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into this such that it may make me feel a little better - and if there's actually a real chance my vision will kick in even after 8 days of no progress. Often, I hear of near instant results when it comes to Lasik. That's kind of what I was hoping for initially, but, that said, I'd be fine if it took more time just so long as I can eventually see well.

Hmmm. Obviously I am not a doctor, so don't take everything I say to be 100% accurate. But I did have lasik myself, and many of my friends have too. With Lasik, you should pretty have your peak vision within a few days of the surgery. It's possible that they may have to do a touch up surgery for you. I had to get one done in my right eye after the lasik (had PRK for that). But yeah, remember to use loads and loads of lubricant drops everyday as they epithelial layer is still healing, and eyes can get pretty dry after lasik. Not using enough drops may also be causing some blurriness.

It was about two months total for me to heal, so progress will seem very slow since it's been only a week.

Take your drops and whatever prescriptions given to as instructed and update your doctor regularly.

The cloudiness took a bit longer to clear and the glares from lights at night to fade as well.

All in all you're looking at 3 to 3 1/2 months for everything to clear up completely.

Dont worry about it.

Just had it and what you are describing falls in the range described to me as normal although I was great about two days later. Just call your surgery and they will be happy to talk to you or give you a follow up check.

Mine was pretty mild, -1.5 in both eyes, but they healed up super quick. I had perfect vision the next day.

Took about 3 weeks for the dryness and halos to dissipate completely however.

Been a stable 20/15 for two years now.

Did you do the kind where they cut a flap in your cornea? Or do they laser directly onto the eye?

Directly onto the eye takes longer to heal, I got it done on April 13th, and it took until about a good 3 or 4 weeks before I felt like I was really seeing great.

I'd just keep on your drops and do what the doctor says. There's still time.

This is what I hear a lot -- instant results. This is the source of my anxiety, despite the fact that the professionals have told me it can potentially take weeks. It's just 8 days of no improvement from 20/40 has me anxious. Plus I have a lot of trouble getting work done.

Did you have Lasik or PRK?

I had Lasik done 4 years ago. Sorry for you troubles. I also had to wait a while before things got better. Keep on taking your eye drops and keep your eyes moisturized. If they have you on any other eye drops, keep taking those as well. The dryness is worst for me in the winter. In the summer it's not so bad. Hang in there! Things will improve.
