from the USA. I really need to get the hell out from where I am living now. I need a change of scenery for a little bit, maybe forever. I was thinking about moving to England for a few months/a year or so. I need to know how expensive is it to live there? Would it be easy for me to get a job without a college degree? Do I need to apply for a workers visa or can I just hop over and start applying for jobs. If I chose too, how easy would it be to get in a college there? Thanks for the help.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
only professionals (doctors, lawyers, accountants) would have an "easy" time getting a work permit over there. Getting employment without even a degree would be very difficult I'd imagine. College, like everything, will be expensive. If you really passionately want to make the move, it can be done. My best friend did this as a junior in high school. Paid out the ass for tuition to finish high school there, then went on to Kings College. Now, 12/13 years later he's happily married but living in a closet almost. But he is very happy. Still not a citizen though.

It's fucking awesome over there, and people aren't nearly as cold as the perception of the Brits would be. However, the cost is atrocious... luckily for you, it's rather easy for Americans to get jobs if you don't have a problem working in restaurants and such. There's lots of "american" themed places in London and throughout England, and they usually will jump at the opportunity to hire Americans. It's a lot more of an aura to work at TGI Fridays and say "Hey, whus up folks? How ya doin?" with an American accent than it is with other British accents. This is just some of the stuff I looked at when I was considering getting a student work visa.

By the way, if you're a student it's a LOT easier to get a work permit over there for a short amount of time (6 mos to a year) than it is to get one if you're out of school.

So yeah, getting the visa may be hard, but finding a job shouldn't be TOO bad.

My ex got a 6 month work permit for London last Fall. She's been living there working at a Hostel and Hotel. She's really enjoying it, though from her stories it seems like there have been a lot of rough times. However, she's the type of person that thrives on adventure and living as close to the edge as possible.

If you can handle living in a hostel (cheapest solution) then by all means go for it.

I'm in London. Come sleep on my floor. I promise not to put the pictures I take of you as you sleep on the web. They, and the lock of hair I shall require, will be for my own collection.
