So, much like our videogame backlogs, I have a backlog of movies and shows laying on my shelves or my hard-drives that I am, in some cases, years behind.

I finally got around to watching Mission Impossible: Fallout last night. .

It is as great as everyone says,. 9 out of 10. Never felt 2 and a half hours go by so fast, I never felt it drag even if some of the broker scenes maybe weren't necessary. Outstanding action.

My only nitpick:

Why make it so obvious that Cavill is the bad guy? I mean they literally give it away intentionally less than halfway thru the film. Seems like they could have made it a little more of a surprise? Even the trailer seemed to give it away, and even in the film, before the telephone scene that gives it away, the way Walker is described basically gives it way, Hunt flat out saying "you are the reason we can't ID Lark, you kill everyone who knows him" or whatever.

This was better than I remembered. I think this is even better than Bride of Frankenstein. This was the final time Boris Karloff played the monster and Bela Lugosi is also in the movie as Igor. Basil Rathbone is great as Wolf von Frankenstein.

Another recommendation for The Lighthouse. Caught a preview screening, it's not out until next year in the UK, I think it's out right now in the US.

Batshit insane black and white artsy historical drama/comedy/horror/whatever from the guy that made The Witch, stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe.

Just saw parasite. Went in knowing nothing other than the title and that it was a korean film with fantastic reviews. It went completely over my head. Did not enjoy. The friend I went with thought it was great though.
 
I couldn't sleep last night, so I opened up Netflix (yeah, yeah, I know — not sure why I'm still subscribed either), and scanned through the lists until I found a movie called Time Trap.

-I enjoy these low budget movies nobody has ever heard of
-The concept of exploring a strange cavern with a totally different, rapid speed of time compared to the surface, sounded like it could be interesting
-If a small movie hits Netflix Most Popular, it must be doing something right

So I gave it a watch, and... I really had a lot of fun. More fun than I've had with the blockbuster stuff for a while, actually.

It's not a masterpiece or anything, just a lot of cool ideas, none of a certain crowd's hamfisted ideas/politics, and an entertaining ride, the next time you're sitting down looking for something to watch.
 
I have spiderman far from home and 47 meters down uncaged waiting at home, so my answers will probably be a big no no...
 
I saw Frozen 2, enjoyed it quite a bit but not as good as the first. My wife keeps singing one of its songs.

Very aggressive, can rotate a bunch of stars in and out (Shown above) Japan really exposed the world during WW2. So the Japan scenes were HUGE, if I'm a fan of anything military I would allow myself to enjoy this one.

Ready or Not(2019). A fun part horror almost kinda part dark comedy kind of in the same vein as Get Out. It was a lot of fun. A short wacky enjoyable flick.
 
Last night, I watched The VVitch. Delightfully unsettling, sucks that I never heard anything about it when it first released.

Okay, here's one. So I finally watched Mean Girls about a week ago. Is there something that I'm missing with this movie? There's this undercurrent of something deeply philosophical swirling around this movie that I just didn't catch. What didn't I get?

I honestly was going to ask the same about witch not sure why it got the fan fare it did can't comment on mean girls the name itself brings me out in a rash haha
 
I watched all of the Scream movies this weekend. I enjoy those. 3 is pretty fucked up to rewatch in light of all of the Weinstein stuff...these were made by Dimension which is a Miramax company (Clerks VHS spotted in the party at the end of the first movie, and Jay and Silent Bob cameo in 3 at the movie studio), and there is a lot of talk about slutty Hollywood actresses sucking their way to the top and the monsters up there who are using and abusing them.

Then I watched both of the I Know What You Did Last Summer movies (the third one doesn't exist.) By the numbers nostalgic crack.

Man I love me some 90's slasher flicks. The posters gave me a laugh - prominently featuring all 6 main characters on each one.

Edit: I just heard a woman at work say something about a movie, couldn't hear which one, but she said "it has a positive female main character so I liked it". This shit just makes me Picard face palm. Like wow we really need to support these portrayals of strong women because it's not like we've ever seen one of those in oh I don't know, the past 40 years.

These slashers I mentioned alone are prime examples of this having already been done decades ago, yet we still are inundated with messaging that positive female roles are few and far between. Sidney and Gale from Scream are in all 4 movies, and consistently prove themselves to be smarter than their male counterparts. The only guy who makes it to the end from the first movie is Dewey, the comically inexperienced deputy who is nearly always played for laughs.

Julie in IKWYDLS is the sexy but smart main character, she is shown to be the only one with backbone and the only one who the act torments, she's the moral centre. The boys are constantly not sure what to do, and the two female leads drive the entire amateur detective investigation. I am so motherfucking sick of this women are shit on narrative.

I mean, sure, but like I said, they are the driving force behind the investigation, Julie is ultimately the one who figures things out, and is the only one who appears to be moral enough to really struggle with keeping the secret. The guys literally do nothing, and a few times defer to the women for what they should do next. In Scream, same deal, the men are either killers or ineffectual, the women are the moral centers and heroes.

Well, I liked The Witch but I can earnestly say I never want to see it again. Regarding Mean Girls, the years were unkind to Lindsay Lohan following this film. Given the chance to age gracefully, she'd still be a vision today instead of the shameful pump of narcotic residue trapped inside human leather that she is now. Such a waste.
 
I just watched Hollow Man. Spoilers below. I remember this being pretty poorly received, but I enjoyed it in the theater, and I enjoyed it again tonight. It's nothing spectacular, but the effects are kind of fun and there really aren't a ton of movies about the invisible man. It's an interesting idea. Didn't realize it was a Paul Verhoeven flick.

And I swear I don't go looking for this shit lol, but this is yet another example, from 20 years ago now, where the protagonist is the strong sexy scientist Elizabeth Shue character. I mean ostensibly it's Kevin Bacon, but Shue is the hero in the end, she's literally tending to a downed James Brolin in the climax before heading off to face the villain, tranq gun in hand. 20 years ago. It's just insane how obviously false this narrative of "women don't have positive representation in media" is. If you say shit enough people really do believe it I guess.

Of course, which sort of makes the point alone, but you find examples of this kind of women are wonderful effect in nearly everything going back several decades now. They've had equal, nay, better treatment in media for as long as I can remember. But I'm derailing here, sorry.
 
It's kind of sad but I haven't seen a truly good movie this year. I mean something I would rate at least a 9 out of 10.

And yes, I've seen Joker and Endgame.

My favorite movie of the year is probably Toy Story 4. I didn't know how they were going to make ANOTHER one interesting but somehow they pulled it off, 4 might be my 2nd favorite after 2.

Every time I see Hollow Man mentioned it reminds me of that X-Files episode where a dude wished to be invisible. He starts running around outside naked and sees an attractive woman across the street. Classic Vince Gilligan written and directed episode. Peak X-Files fuckery.

That is such a great episode - I love after that when Scully is doing the autopsy lol. Really fun episode. I loved Sasso's wish to bring his brother back lol.

As far as the movie is concerned for Hollow Man, I dunno. It's a very forgettable bad flick and I think Verhoeven went too far with the Rhona Mitra rape scene. It was really out of tone with the rest of the film.

Maybe I saw an edited version or something, and I don't remember the scene being very graphic in theaters. I watched this on the website of a local TV station last night, so I don't know if it was edited or not. He just makes his way into the woman's room, then stalks around her and plays with the mirror before jumping her and pushing her to the bed, that's pretty much all they show. If that's what you're referring to I don't think that's going too far with the flick.

His turn from scientist to rapist does happen a bit quick, like pretty much immediately after he is turned invisible and is able to touch a woman, he does it lol.

I watched Tusk last night. The tone is all over the place, but I really love the scenes with Long & Parks before the madness begins. The suit is horrific, and just the whole idea is pretty sickening to watch unfold. I love a good thriller setup like this though, you know what's going to happen and it's tense to watch anyway.

But the tone though is just too weird, it jumps from Smith-esque humour to horrific body horror on a dime.

Depp as Guy LaPointe was an interesting choice, but ultimately the character didn't work for me in this story, it was trying to be too funny with something I was not able to really laugh about.

The Lost Boys. probably the first time I watched this all the way through. so Buffy. so Stranger Things. so Twilight. feels like pretty much every post-90s vampire or goth media was hugely influenced by this film. beautifully shot, with cool fantastical sets and lots of operatic silliness, including Corey Feldman speaking in a ridiculous fake Rambo accent the whole movie (LOL such an odd choice, you wonder why Schumacher was ok with that). it brings an appropriate level of camp & then-modern hipness to the goth/horror fantasy genre.

crazy teenage vampires, jokes about hippie parents, Keifer Sutherland as the coolest proto-Spike style lead vampire bad boy, the famoused greasy saxophone guy, the group of LA losers sitting around a beach fire listening to Aerosmith that Sutherland's gang feeds on, it's all so great. oh, and the vampires have only one image in their pirate cave style lair -- a giant photo of Jim Morrison! classic 🖤🖤🖤

I love Mulder's wishes too, in retrospect I should have seen the last one coming, but I remember being caught off guard by it. I thought for sure Mulder was going to make an ironclad wish to right all possible wrongs, but he wises up and does the right thing.
 
Saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and I liked it. Thought it was good, not great. There were 2 great parts in the movie and I thought the rest didn't really have much of a narrative, which isn't a huge deal, but compared to Tarantino's best it ranks much farther down for me. But the end was absolutely fucking hilarious.

Idle Hands - Quite fun, I had never seen this before. I think Seth Green sold his soul for eternal youth because that guy never seems to age. Jessica Alba is smoking hot in this flick:

SLC Punk! - I haven't watched this since my younger punk days. I found this movie cringey as fuck then, and almost intolerably so now. Lillard is decent I think, but everything about every person in this movie turns me off. We're to believe both of the characters do well in school, though one wonders why hardcore anarchists would even bother. It's all just so cringe. Even when I was more into punk around the time of this film, I never related to the people who were obsessed with the fashion of the scene, and this movie is chocked full of scenesters.

I just saw Dark Waters with Mark Ruffalo. It's about the case against Duval and it's experiments with Teflon and how they tried to keep the results secret.
Pretty darn good film and Ruffalo was gewd.
It's a bit of a slow but though so if you aren't in to slow burns maybe wait for home release. Otherwise go out and check it out at theaters.

I'm 2 hours into The Irishman. I would normally never stop a movie and come back later, but this motherfucker is 3.5 hours long.

It's really damn good so far and Pacino is absolutely killing it in his role, but the de-aging CG is distracting as hell. The mouths just have these weird exaggerated movements sometimes that mess up the whole thing.

Part of me wishes they just went with makeup even if it does look like a 70 year old man trying to look 35.

Same here never finished it, the pacing is dreadful.

Anyway saw rambo last blood, pretty good movie actually. Nice pacing, good encounters and a nice end to the series.

Even while some of it doesn't make a lot of sense

Why not just blow up the entire tunnels with all of them in it. Instead of walking through it and slaying them one by one, i guess revenge.

I watched A Christmas Carol starring Patrick Stewart tonight. It was pretty good in a few scenes, but I will probably never watch it again. A lot of the acting was like community theater levels.

Instead, I recommend watching the 1984 version starring George C Scott. I watch it nearly every year and it's an amazing bit of acting and storytelling. The spirits are actually creepy and unsettling. I highly recommend seeing it.

I recently bought the Alastair Sim version from 1951 on bluray, always been my favourite Scrooge. It came with a collrozed version, but I enjoy the black and white. I also think the Muppets Christmas Carol is pretty fun.
