Anyone want to help an idiot secure his wireless connection?

I simply have a LinkSys Wireless-G Broadband Router (2.4 GHz, 802.11g, etc) connected to apartment's ethernet port, and then the LinkSys Notebook Adaptor installed on my laptop. Pretty damned simple, no other networked devices or anything.

Alright, so there's a whole bunch of people in my building using wireless connections, and I haven't bothered to secure mine and it's frequently becoming unavailable, although if I just connect my laptop to the ethernet port, the connection's all good. So, unless I'm mistaken, basically someone else is likely using my connection. Right?

Now I'm reading the incredibly limited LinkSys support documentation I have, and it's just confusing the hell out of me as to what I'm supposed to do. Some things seem overly complicated, some seem overly simple. And the Windows XP wizard for setting up a wireless network just makes no sense to me.

So... what do I do? I know the SSID (why can't it just be called the network name and make it easy for people?) although I can't seem to figure out how to change it from the default. I see that LinkSys recommends enabling WAP encryption, MAC address filtering, an administrator password which I'm not sure is really relevant to me, and disabling SSID broadcast. I can't seem to even find controls for half of this.

I see something for changing the Network Authenticator to WAP, which then defaults the encryption to AES. That opens up some EAP options, which I have no idea about.

So, now that I've babbled about a ton of shit I don't really understand... anyone have suggestions or a simple fix?

Edit: Oh, and it might be noteworthy that I never truly set up the router. I just plugged the damn thing in because the setup was solely focused on a network and wanted me to do things that weren't possible or relevant given my intention on just using it to link my laptop and broadband connection.

Well all you have to do is enable the stop broadcasting SSID funtion and set a password. To be a little safer you should probably change the SSID as if anyone has connected to your network before they will know it and if they are anygood they could possibly break your encryption and get your pssword, not likly but possible. As for how to do all of this I don't have your manuel so really can't help you.

First of all change your administration password, if you don´t someone could even block you out.

In my actiontec modem you can set a wap password, it uses a hex password like FF FF FF FF FF. Don´t know if its the same in yours.

Just got mine today :)

Alright, well I've been fiddling around. I guess I've disabled SSID broadcasting, changed the SSID and my password. That'll do for tonight. My obsessing over this is keeping me away from far more important homework and studying.

Thanks guys.
