So I just got an offer for a 2nd job as a sales rep for one of the big four, and well I like my current job just fine, but previously being in sales I kind of miss getting commission and having more direct interactions with customers.

With the current way the industry is right now (I don't even know what it's like so enlighten me), is it a good time to be a sales associate or even a assistant manager to a store? I want to cut back some hours from my current job to try it but to be honest I know nothing about phone sales.

Phonesalesmen-GAF tell me about your job!

Eh... I did it for years. Worked for Verizon and AT&T. Worked for authorized retailers too.

Really depends on if it's a corp store or retailer. Either way, I will never work retail again. I'm in IT and I love it... the logner I stay in this industry, the more I'll get paid.

I wouldn't do it again because the quotas and the pressure to sell phones are high and it's not like the early 2000s when the cell phone market blew up in the US. It's mostly upgrades with new contracts sprinkled in. Also, a lot of people do prepaid.

It's best to be a manager because you get a cut of what your associates make. You have to pressure them to sell sell sell though. Some of the practices for the retailers I worked for were less than savory...

It really depends at how good you are as a salesman. If you can get your technique down well, it should be no problem. There are subsets of customers that you have to know how to sweet talk. Some you can take your time and some you can be forcefull with. Just depends. Getting my technique down took a while but I was damn good.

I was also in sales mode all the time. Anyone I met I was always kind of selling to, they just didn't know it. I made a lot of sales by not being in the kiosk/store.

It's a lot of effort. But it does pay off if you're good. You can make a lot of money if you know what you're doing but like I said, it takes time. I don't want to have to do that anymore because of the practices the retailers like to follow, but it can be a good money maker.

Also, be sure to save some of your comission for your taxes. They don't tax comission directly, but you'll have to pay it at the end of the year. This also depends on if they make you an independant contractor (or some shit like that) within the company. So you're in a special tax bracket. Depends on the place.
