I've been working from home for about 9 months now. My whole department went to teleworker status since it's cheaper for the company.

WFH is the ****ing best. I wake up 5 minutes before my shift starts. I use all my downtime to do whatever the hell I want.

and gotten fatter

My company recently let people who have been there for a while start telecommuting most of the week (3 days home, 2 days in the office). We've been expanding the company pretty quickly and have very limited office space, and everyone can do their jobs from home just as effectively as if they were in the office. I basically just come in for a weekly team meeting and to help out the new guys.

It's been great for me because right now I live about an hour and a half away from the office. It's nice that if I have down time I don't have to pretend I'm doing something - I just turn on my DS and play some games until someone sends me a project. It's also great not feeling like people are looking over my shoulder and I don't have to worry about whether the company is ever going to check my internet usage.

The downside is that people tend to be more critical of you if you make a mistake or fall behind on your work. Or maybe it's just the way I perceive things. The freedom it affords me far out weighs that though. As long as you're a responsible worker and you make sure you get things done, it's great.

For six freakin years, and other than my GF thinking work at home means "you're always free to do shit" it's great. I do some work, I take a nap, I do some more work. I've dropped ten full pants sizes in the meantime too. Go figger.

Motivation was a problem early on, but after a while you stop being distracted by trashy TV shows. Sure helps to set productivity goals every morning.

I did it for awhile and hated it. There are way too many distractions and not having any "real" contact with your co-workers and anyone else in the company on a regular basis just slows things down.

anyone have any idea how I could go about getting a job where I stay home? I'm not doing this because I'm lazy and want to slack off. I have pretty bad panic attacks when I go out most of the times.

I think a psychiatrist would be more beneficial for you in the long run.

Don't do that, you're cir-sum-venting a serious problem(anxiety).

How about a video game website? If I were to start up my own could I make any money? I write for another site now. I've been working on getting better about the panic attacks and going out more. I spent all summer in San Fran.

That's probably the worst thing you could do then.

EDIT: Of course that depends on why you get panic attacks. Generaly, they come from like, agoraphobia, and then you NEED to get out. It would be downright bad to shut yourself in.

I started it recently and I find it challenging.
Work is always sitting right there and I don't know when to quit.
I need some kind of regular schedule again.

this thread is a trap isn't it ? - you are trying to get people to say "WFH is awesome, i send a few mails whilst playing Chromehounds and no one notices!" then you send it to the companies and we all get fired! BOOOOOO to you sir! ;)

Working from home is great.

I found that when I work in an office, people spend time talking to each other (how was your night, got plans for the weekend, etc), you get distracted by convos going on, and other stuff.

Working from home, I get up and immediately start working... around 7:30 or so. So I'm already working about an hour earlier than I would be in the office. I usually put on a DVD and it just plays in loop while I work - I'm the type that can concentrate better with something like that... and it works good cuz I know when my fav scenes are coming up so I can pay more attention.

It's great cuz when you want to take a break, you can do what you want with it... it's not just going outside and walking around or however yout ake abreak at work. You can play 15 minutes or so in a game or whatever you want.

We set up everyone on Yahoo Messenger so that we could all keep in touch with each other.

With all that said, this was all at my last job. My current job, I work in the office :(

I was working from home...but quit because I moved to a new area...and wanted to meet new people.

I was making phone calls all day...asking restuarants to fax their menus...

It was for a website that holds restaurant menus.

OMFG this gets a big, big QFT from me. I live with my girlfriend and have a fulltime job I do from home, while she is still in school. We get along well, but when we do get into fights (small or big), it invariably revolves around this issue.

She cannot get it through her head that "working from home" != "sitting around browsing the net and playing Xbox" all day. She gets annoyed when she comes home on like a Thursday and the lawn isn't mowed.

"you were here all day!" she says.

"Yeah, I goddamn WORKED all day."

"You're not working now. You're watching TV"

"It's 6:30 PM! I'm *off* work now!"

If she ever comes home and I'm not still working, she just assumes I haven't done shit all day. I'm in a leadership position at my job... I don't know why she thinks I'd still have it after so long if I wasn't working extremely hard.

The other half of it is like you said. She picks a monday morning to start a big home improvement project over the summer, when she isn't in school. Gets progressively more pissed as the week wears on and I can barely help her with it. Ditto for movies, shopping, errands, etc etc.

I need to set a rule that door shut = do no disturb or something.

Been doing it for two years now. I don't like it - I often find myself working after midnight because I waste too much time during normal business hours. I know that's my own fault, and that someone with more discipline will not be hindered by it.

Also, the lack of contact with co-workers sucks. I haven't any met new people through my work (of course, social life is another thing), they're all just e-mail addresses to me. You'll soon start to miss the small things - the chitchat, talk around the water cooler, complaining to co-workers, the laughs, etc.

But, obviously, WFH can be great at times. I get up and quit when I want to, I smoke while working, I can have as much coffee as I want, I can take days off, I can have a friend come over, you name it. However, I would advise against WFH, unless you have a girlfriend or wife around or if you can work together with somebody else.

Edit: this may sound somewhat depressed to some. That's not the case... I'm just another guy who hates is job and is seeking to change everything. I'm going back to school. :)

wow, you're me.

i've gone back to study 3d stuff (and loving it) after an extended period of working at home, and i had the same problems - if you really REALLY try you can nail the 'work 9 to 5' thing and then turn the computer off, but most times it does't really work :P i still do work from home but not as much. and i still find myself up til 2am some nights finishing stuff i could, and should, have finished by early that evening.

and my immediate thought when reading this thread was to talk up how you can get coffee whenever you want. that's the highlight of my WFH daily routine. over and over again.

but you already did it for me :lol
