Competitive players, as a whole, are really hard to get behind banning characters/cards etc.

It's because OP characters gets them easy wins. Why make it hard on yourself?

Rich Brown, Denti, and a few others showed up. The others quit the game. A lot of people quit the game because most tournaments have dissolved to Ice Climbers and Meta Knight mains running all over the place.

With the advent of Project M and Smash 4 on the horizon, I probably would have too.

Yeah... the atmosphere just feels pretty dead.

Brawl's Finals in Apex 2013 was legitimately hype, though. That was a fantastic set, further aided by the fact that it wasn't just Meta Knight dittos.
