With DirecTV giving TiVo the boot before too long, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Sony has a great piece of technology going with it. The thing is, if it doesn't support digital cable or satellite feeds, what's the point? Most people have some form of subscription TV these days and there's not exactly a load of content for the free TV users.

I wish DirecTV would stop being dicks, unlock the HMO abilities of the existing Series 2 DirecTiVos and finally put those USB 2.0 ports to use.

Tivo is releasing a CableCard (presumably multistream) HD DVR next January supposedly. It would leave them out of the satellite business, but would allow you to go out and buy a Tivo and hook it up to your digital cable.

The only real downside will be making sure your cable company will use/support multistream CableCards and that you won't be able to use VOD or PPV without first ordering it by phone/web (CableCard is still unidirectional). Technically you also won't be able to use the cable company's IPG either but you will have TiVo's IPG so that is pretty much a win/win situation.

blah.. hack your Tivo and unlock it yourself. As long as you have a Series 2 (not 2.5 or 1) DirecTivo unit getting 4.0 and HMO up and running is insanely simple.

Apple should just buy into one of the many open source DVR systems. Buying TiVo would be a waste.

This is not true at all. Tivo has patents on a number of very interesting features currently only available in Tivo. The suggestions setup, wishlists and database searching and creation, etc, hence why Tivo is the only DVR (open or closed source) with these features. Buying Tivo would give apple the patents to these and allow apple to either charge licensing for them or be the only kid on the block with them.

I want to know what's taking Tivo so long with HD. The people who love Tivo love gadgets and I'd guess they'd be more likely to be the people that want HDTV ASAP. Yet Tivo is dragging their feet about it.

Maybe they have a non-compete deal with DirecTV....who knows. Apple would be the only company that I could see buying TiVo and treating it right.

From the guides I've read, getting my DirecTiVo to support HMO is anything but 'insanely simple'. But I'm new to the world of DirecTiVo, so I'd appreciate it if you could drop me a PM with some info. Thanks.

borghe made a good point, but you've got to understand that TiVo has brand equity behind it. The name is well worth the dough. :p

Smith Barney analysts don't believe that Apple is interested in TiVo. Beyond diluting their focus, Apple has also made comments indicating that "the DVR market seems to be a commodity whereby all players will eventually have similar hardware and software longer term, which means that the DVR market really boils down to marketing and branding."
