Yeah, the lack of optical out is a bummer for me too.
Fire TV has one if you're interested.
A8X is unnecessary driving 1080p.
Also 2000 called and is asking for its digital audio port back. If only we could get it replaced by one single digital connector that supports audio and video. Maybe even network and return channel audio. And was mature enough that it was cheap to include in any AV device being released.

I'm guessing now that Apple is raising this from "hobby" status, we'll see faster iterations. Lack of 4K now was likely lack of content vs. cost. So yeah, once content is widely available I'd guess a 4K upgrade will drop immediately.

Apple tends to wait until the dust has settled and the infrastructure is in place on certain tech.
The first iPhone didn't even have 3G. LTE came to iPhone later than Android. Etc.
I expect this type of response from Apple fans. It's complete and utter bullshit, but expected. PS4, Xbox One, Fire TV (I can go on and on) all released recently. All have optical out. Why? Because people use them. A lot of people use them.
Why would it be a nightmare? It has essentially a touchpad on it and supports voice input. Should be a breeze to navigate a browser on that.

I am interested in this performance wise. Call me crazy but I much prefer my Roku(s) to my Apple TV due to how slow, clunky, and damn near ineffective the thing is at times. I have had issues with the interface, streaming, and even airplay. I much prefer the Apple ecosystem so I am anxious to read reviews.

I'm still buying this thing day one. I've been looking for an upgrade for the current Apple TV for way too long and the 3rd party app store sold me. Sucks that it can't do 4K, but I don't have a 4K TV so I don't care right now.

i use my apple tv for streaming, mostly crunchy roll and netflix. Been waiting for the Funimation app thats been coming soon for over a year now. Now that this ones out I assume it won't come out for older apple tv now so dunno if I get one or just plug my laptop in to my tv and skip the middle man.
I think it's to reduce to initial download/load times. You can definitely build apps greater than 200MB, you just have to split them into chunks so that they will be loaded on-demand, rather than all at once.

Plex has a horrible track record on Apple devices, unfortunately. Supposedly it's a "new priority" but the new from scratch iOS app sucks.

It's missing the most important component: a keyboard. I can't imagine trying to get Siri to figure out what URL I'm trying to tell her to go to, or jumping around and filling in form fields via voice. No thanks.
Maybe I can use my iPhone or iPad's keyboard like the current Apple TV, but at that point, why not just do it on the device itself?
Only if the experience on Apple TV is more streamlined than the equivalent website or iOS app, which is at least within the realm of possibility given the emphasis on voice.
Being able to say "Hey Siri, order more paper towels and laundry detergent" in an Amazon Echo-like way would be much better than reaching in my pocket, opening up the Amazon app, tapping through, etc.

Used plex with iPhones and iPads since it was repleased on the App Store. Not had any issues.

Might. The reason there was no jailbreak for the ATV3 was because no one cared. With an appstore and more people buying this model, maybe someone will care.
I hope it happens, I would love to use that new remote with Kodi.
I'm sure it will let you use a bluetooth keyboard like the current model.
I am sure there will be an app from Amazon. I doubt Apple will restrict apps that are currently available.

Let's wait and see what app devs come up with in the first 6-12 months of the product and App Store being out there in the wild before we start jumping to conclusions about things like this.
The 200MB limit is not accurate. Apple is pushing this across all platforms. The key is the on demand asset loading. The problem is that .app bundles have been universal. One bundle for iPhone AND iPad. Then they get huge, and have double assets, now triple assets, etc.
So what Apple is starting to push for is the 200MB primary .app bundle, and then loading the remaining resources as needed. So if you're on iPad, only loading the iPad resources. ATV only loading those resources, etc.
So no, there isn't a 200MB limit. As a dev you just have to manage your resources ESPECIALLY if you're releasing a universal app. The upside is a better user experience. Say a 900MB iPhone download instead of the previous 1.8GB universal download.

You also clearly don't understand how GPUs work. The higher clock speed and fill rate is needed on the iPad's because they are pushing 2048x1536. Literally more pixels thus they need a higher fill rate and throughput to keep up at 60fps. Throwing that at 1920x1080 isn't going to accomplish much really. In theory it would give faster frame rates except that Apple TV is still forced to 60Hz. So they'd bump up the processor to literally go unused for the most part.
This isn't PC land. Throwing in a better GPU doesn't magically give you 20fps more just because APIs on iOS just aren't coded that way. The iPad traditional gets the X processor because it NEEDS it to support 2048x1536 along with multi-tasking features. Not because apple wants games to run smoother on it (which for the most part they don't, in that they run on par with the iPhone versions just at a higher resolution which should be your first big clue right there.)

I don't think it was because nobody cared. I remembered heavily following it and the problem was that it was a stripped down version of iOS which means it didn't have the exploits that were found on the iPhone/iPad. Hopefully since this is more developer based, those exploits will open up again. Still, even with a jailbroken ATV2, it didn't allow you to link Netflix inside of Kodi. So even if we got a jailbroken ATV with Kodi, the key point of having apps linkable inside Kodi seems doubtful to me. Hopefully I'm wrong.
I think devs will find plenty of ways to utilize the ATV. I'm just focusing on the online shopping as demoed today. I really don't think this is something people will want to use to do their shopping when they have a MacBook, iPhone, and/or iPad laying around which will be much better suited for that task. It just seemed weird that Apple made it a big highlight of their conference. I don't know anyone who wants to shop that way nor do I see what you gain over the other means.
