Ultimately hollow collection of action set-pieces, and a mixed bag visually. Some interesting backdrops, but the character cg is lifeless and off-putting. Think Matrix Reloaded meets FF:TSW meets Masamune Shirow (but primarily for his love of techno jargon). Haven't seen the original anime or read the manga, though, so I can't compare it.
after my afternoon was ruined by watching Solaris, i shall give this a spin for this evening.
im expecting beautiful animation but with a stupid preachy storyline (same as the manga i guess)
im a big Shirow fan, and as much as i like his clean art style, i cant stand his character motivation, however interesting it is to read an author whom thinks completely different to you.
What's irritating isn't how bad the cellshading gets, it's that sometimes it works. Although what I mean by works leads to another problem... the movie can't seem to decide if it wants to use cg to imitate anime or photorealism. Also, the story itself is crap and not even worth discussing.
In the end, Appleseed goes in the "Try again in a few years" pile along with FF:TSW.
I liked FF:TSW, and I reckon I'll probably like this. As long as it entertains me I'll be happy. I think the draw of these films is the looks too - I'll not only be watching this for entertainment value, I'll be watching it to see something that looks like nothing I've seen before.
i concur Hitokage, i gave up at 40minutes, that script is awful.
i speed viewed to the set pieces. very very nice animation. foundations of the future definitely, but concentrate on the substance.....

I thought this was about Johnny Appleseed, and I was gonna say they better have him dying in Fort Wayne, Indiana. But then it turned out to be something totally different.
Wow, the Japanese trailer was sooooo much better.
The American voice dubbing doesn't sound very good. This looks like one to watch with subtitles.
But man, I love that last shot with her jumping off of the skyscraper. There have been plenty of movies with people jumping off of skyscrapers, but that is the absolute best I've ever seen it done.
