F1: The Movie | Reviews are out

Good movie. And for a modern movie, one of the better "sports" movies in the last several years. Maybe since Ford vs Ferrari.

Two things are clear to me after this:

1.) I'm not a big Brad Pitt guy, but, he does well in sports movies. MoneyBall and F1 are both very enjoyable films. At his age, I believe he should lean into the sports genre of movies. They are leaps better than seeing him in action movies at his age.

2.) F1 is the type of movie Apple should be going after. No question. This is easily the best movie Apple has done. By a mile. They should be looking for big budget safe bets and also have a few Hallmark style "feel good" movies which they are good at.

Great movie. It hovers between an A- and B+ for me.

My only small gripe with it was that I was hoping for more uninterrupted first person camera angles mid-race. Those were the most exhilarating moments in the movie and whenever they cut away from them to show a 'secondary character reaction shot' I felt that it took away from the moment'.

Instead I would have had them do the 24-style multi-window, and keep the driver view as the larger screen while popping up the other character reactions on the side in smaller frames, sort of like a comic panel. I understand why some here wouldn't like that, but at least that way they could have satisfied the ones who are looking for those reaction shots.

Otherwise, this was great to me and Hans Zimmer only enhanced it even further, making it feel like the Dark Knight bike chase but for a whole movie.
Yeah, more first person or cockpit view would always be welcome but it's worlds better than Gran Turismo which had zero.

Apple leadership clearly can't handle anything with edge in it. You can see it in how safe and box-ticking all of their movie and TV releases are. Real A-level filmmaking has to be dangerous. But yes, this worked well for them, since it has a pure and nostalgic feel to it with talent behind it.

You are 100% right. If i am not mistaken, Apple has a mandate to not make anything "too edgy" and they are not allowed to show "drug use, violence against women or children", or use any "race or orientation" in a "less than" way.

It reminds me of 1990's NBC. Everything was "safe" but trying to make it a high quality.

I have come to believe Apple would be good at having a few big budget safer bet movies and also having the family friendly movie with heart "B" movies that have long disappeared from Hollywood. Movies like "Dave", "Tremors", "Rudy", "Super 8" style movies like these. IMO, Apple could make very well, and for a lower budget.

FX Hulu is the Sega Genesis to Apple's Super Nintendo.

The main thing that Apple is beating FX Hulu with is the steady content dripfeed. FX Hulu will take some time between giving you good shows and movies with some edge to them.

Gran Turismo is a movie that was much better than it had any right to be. It was the first playstation studios movie that showed me 'hey, with enough passion/heart and actually treating this game property like a movie's movie, this could work' and that's why it also rates high with me. It goes for something different than F1 and accomplishes what it needs to.

I saw this last night in IMAX and throughly enjoyed it. Great race scenes and some funny quips. Dialogue and characters didn't have much depth though. Probably give it a 6 or 7 out of 10, but recommend it especially in IMAX as the whole movie is in the IMAX ratio.

I was really debating seeing this in IMAX, I wish I would have. I have a buddy who wants to see it, not sure if I'll watch it again but if I do it will for sure be imax.

My mind has just exploded!

I'm a fan of the actress Rebecca Ferguson, she plays every role really well so when I watched this I was pleasantly surprised to see her in it, she sounded like she was putting on a fake Irish accent but hey ho, it was the character she had to portray.

I just saw a short on YouTube when 3 of the actors were asked about what movie they would like to watch in IMAX again.. I watched it and it said the names of the actors... None said Rebecca Ferguson 🤔

I've just compared the name on the screen to imdb and low and behold it wasn't Rebecca Ferguson at all, it's an Irish actress called Kerry Condon

Talk about lookalike! 🤯

For those who have seen both, how does it compare to "Rush"?
They'd make a really great double feature... F1 is more visceral, Rush is more character driven so they achieve their highs in different ways. F1 hits harder IMO, it's an *experience* and Rush never feels that way. I mean, I left the cinema thinking I've never seen anything like that before!

I expect F1 will have fantastic rewatch value as it ages and turns retro. With its cars, sponsors, drivers and dramatised incidents, it's a time capsule of 2019-2024 F1. Today it's the cutting edge, 15 years from now it will be nostalgia overload.

Boy do I have something for you.

background: I've been a diehard F1 fan since 1998

This movie was remarkably well done! They never jump-cut between different corners of the track (literally perfect continuity) and the comedy landed much better than I expected. The tactics and strategies were all believable (though it felt slightly too Singapore 2008 at times) and I really liked the tension between all parties.

This is easily 8/10 as a movie and 10/10 when compared to all previous racing films (Driven, Gran Turismo, etc).

Great movie, I would expect that it was going to be corny/tacky as fuck but it isn't.

It's basically a not so flashy Top Gun2 with cars. And Tom probably going to insert Sonny in Days of Thunder, It's such an easy win.

Loved how they spun Martin Connelly real life story as a premise for Sonny Hayes accident. (Senna's "cameo" included")

Just missed a race in Interlagos as it is always one of the last stages of the F1 season for more than 30 years (+ it's such a charismatic track) or Monaco.

I'll give it a try once it's on a streaming service. From the trailers it seems they promote the (fake) drama more than the racing. Something the sport is already suffering from more and more lately.

It's not. Everything is kinda of secondary for the racing, even Brad Pitt transpires that.

Plus this is the kind of movie that deserves the big screen with a huge audio system.

The movie was decently fun as an adventure but overall I can't get past what a terrible sports movie it makes.

It is hard to be really feel-good about a sports team that mostly wins by cheating. Imagine any other sports game where a team deliberately abuses the penalty system to barely scrape out a win when their skills weren't good enough. Yeah, it is technically a win. Yeah, it technically happens in sports to a degree. But this is not really noble or something to be celebrating.

At the end of the film they are up against Lewis Hamilton, the reigning F1 champion who is a legitimately great racer. At this point in the film they have abused circumstances and used teamwork in cars designed to screw people over in order to gain their positioning. Now it is presumed that Hamilton has not only out-raced them the whole time but now is also successfully contending with the two of them who are in cars designed to fuck with people more than they are to go fast and he is still holding up admirably.

At this, I am more impressed and interested in rooting for Hamilton than the two jerks harassing him. Then one of them dangerously challenges him, risking both of their lives, which is something both of his team should know better than to do since both of the characters were in terrible crashes. Yet they still do to fuck over Hamilton sending him spinning off track so the other can win. This is supposed to be inspiring? I don't buy it. That isn't really a good story for the sport. Imagine if there is a NBA movie where they purposefully make Michael Jordan bust his knee so they can get the last minute of the game that they have been fouling out the whole time.

Also, the "he's flying" thing along with the associated near silent front bumper cam… Uhhh, do these guys understand the appeal of driving? Okay, so his character wants a sense of freedom and escape, but generally the thrill of driving a car fast is completely different than the weightless gliding of flight. It is very much about weight, power, traction, and masterful control over these shifting about on a razor edge. That is why Fast & Furious appealed to drag racing and drifting. This movie makes me think it was made by non-car-people.

Adding onto this, there was a disappointing amount of shots from the cockpit with the roaring engine at high speeds. F1 can push harder than most, so I was desiring a nice glimpse into this seat I'll never be able to sit in. Compared to, say, Top Gun Maverick, it really failed to deliver on the cockpit views and thrill of the position these guys get to be in.

Yeah I thought it was her too lol

She also reminds me of Morfydd Clark from Rings of Power

Going away from F1... Like if a forced foul isn't part of a team sports game. There are many successful sport teams that were basically developed around this.
I'll dare to say that England only world cup in 66 was due to both Portugal (the other finalist) and Hungary beating Pelé to a pulp in the group stages.

I'm pretty sure that they devised the movie tactics from thing that already happened in F1.

To name a few. (Not necessarily related to the movie and I'm not saying that's fair or not because F1 isn't a fair sport.)

Lotus had, in the 70's and 80's, variable geometry wings way before FIA allowed it with DRS. FIA tests didn't predicted how the wind would bend the wing at 300km/h.

In the 80's when the turbochargers entered the fray, FIA limited the engine consumption to 220 litres of total fuel in the race in order to give everyone a fair chance. Of course someone had the brilliant idea to basically refuel the car with "frozen" gasoline. Same 220 litres volume, more fuel.

Michael Schumacher/Beneton 94... Besides winning in 94 with an irregular car, Beneton simply removed a filter from the FIA's standard fuel pump saying that it was an instruction from the manufacturers. This allowed their cars to be refueled around 20% faster. Plus Schumi has fair share of team orders when it was "allowed" and another share of deliberately crashes in order to fuckup other drivers qualify or races. The guy even won a race from the pit lane

Nelson Piquet Sr. basically "invented", with Gordon Murray, the idea to warm the entire car before even get into the racing track + the idea of breaking balance on fly in the race.

Ferrari in 2019 made a engine that pumped more fuel than it was allowed when the electronic monitoring device was not looking.

Senna in F3 duct taped his car air opening to warm the engine faster than his adversaries (they even show it in the series), plus the entire Prost/Senna's crash in both 89/90.

F-duct, double diffusers, water brakes, FISA vs Foca wars... Even Sainz said recently that deliberately crashing is more frequent in F1 than anyone thinks.

Okay, some of the things were a little too close to a Briatoregate (and the last race was far from it). But given that they went with an American winning on F1, the rest it is completely passable :)
