Anyone else going to their local record store to make a purchase?

I'll be going to Kiss The Sky in Geneva, IL.

I'm looking for an M83 7". It's going to be a graduation present for my brother.

One of my friends is heading out to find The Everglow by Mae. He will do his damnedest to get a copy tomorrow.

Super excited, hoping to snag:
New St. Vincent single
Death Grips' The Money Store in any medium (the cassettes are pretty sweet, but I'll take vinyl or cd)
The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends 2xLP in crazy colors
King Crimson CD boxset

But my local record store kinda blows, so I'll take whatever they have available.

everything I want is on vinyl.

I have no desire to own a record. Then again, I have not stepped foot in a record store in eight years or so, so I guess this event isn't for me anyhow.

I want the Gorillaz vinyl but AFAIK it's only being released in the U.K., so probably going to have to hit up Ebay =(

Just take a listen to your favorite music on vinyl, you'll never go back.

I have, and I don't hear enough of a difference to warrant the increased cost and decreased portability. I'm not really a fan of physical media period, let alone one that I have to flip a quarter or half way through every album.

I might hit up my closest record store.
I enjoy buying stuff on vinyl but have never owned a record player. So I end up seeing something, get super-excited and buy it, and then go home and file it away into a box.

I do like buying records to display too, like old and used Rush albums or beat-up Iron Maiden records, things with cool album art.

One of these days I'll be able to listen to my records :(

Edit: And isnt there a thread for this already? I could have sworn I was looking at one a couple days ago or maybe last night.
I remember because I looked at the list and decided the only thing I would really, really want would be The Misfts album.

Tegan and Sara - Get Along
Sigur Ros Hvarf/Heim

I'm going to Backside in Burbank. I would do Amoeba but it's gonna be hella crowded probably.

Any Gaffers in the area hit me up

I've always loved the aesthetic of vinyl records and their awesome full sized covers; however, a vinyl habit can get really expensive, and already have other expensive hobbies. I love seeing people's pick ups.

One of the co-founders of Record Store Day is the owner of my local store, Criminal Records in Atlanta. That place is always SUPER packed on RSD - i always steer clear. Apparently Patterson Hood and a handful of Drive-By-Truckers are going to be playing in-store. Gonna be a madhouse.

I thought criminal records went out of business?

Whoa, I went to the site and to my surprise there is a record store about 5 minutes away! Never even knew we had one..

Hoping they have some of the stuff I'm after.

So like .. should I wake up early and get there at 9? Do they usually sell out quick? I was planning on rolling in around noon.

Not personally interested in the things being released tomorrow; I don't buy into vinyl singles or EPs, and the albums are usually overpriced classic reissues where I'd just assume pick up a $2 copy of the original.

That said, I'll probably swing by Easy Street and Silver Platters because there are usually other things on sale to go along with the "holiday."

no way, never again. Black friday lines at reckless records in chicago with overpriced junk that sells out and gets ebayed.

I've always wondered if record store day's overly restricted stock numbers do more harm to record stores than good. You sell a super small number of awesome things one hour of one day of the year. That doesn't create new long term customers.

Monthly events with fewer items, but in larger quantities would be better in my opinion

i guess that depends on how many of the people are just simple ebayers. Otherwise, if you're showing up and buying a green vinyl smells like teen spirit single for $30, you're probably in the grip of a serious vinyl collection and buying lots of it anyway.

as for being a "lets help the record stores" event, i wonder if it is still that or if it's just marketing these days. My local store is an outlier that sells craploads of vinyl and always has, so i don't have much perspective on that.

I'm going out in a bit here in the UK. But the only places near me have either confirmed they're not getting anything I want, or not said at all what they're getting. So I'm going blind to a retailer that probably won't have anything either.

one local death metal store is doing this. I should go and pick up mae and beyond magnetic.

but i have no record player....

Man, I'm really not sure whether I should go or not today. I have no participating record stores close by so I'd have to take the train to Amsterdam.

Last year I got stuck behind these three e-bay scalper types that drove down from Canada. It was a married couple and the father of one of them. They bought a copy (possibly multiples) of EVERYTHING that was released, no joke. Huge stack of stuff. I'm sure they'll be back tomorrow, pricks like this make the event no fun. I don't think I'm even going to bother tomorrow since there's nothing that I really want this year.
