Since the Gun OT is pretty dead im posting this here. Thinking of getting an AR for under $800. I don't really feel like doing a custom build myself so help me decide what premade to get...
Do I go with the M&P 15 Sportsman style or should I go with PSAK47 style?

What do current AR users like? I could be willing to go over $800 if its actually worth it. I don't want something that shoots 9mm though, I know those AR pistols are cool AF but im not looking for that.

S&W M&P Sport II is a decent starter AR-15. No idea what you’ll actually be able to find in stock right now though.
I think that's the issue lol I just went on like 4 sites and ALL stock was sold out. Damn. I knew people were buying them but that's crazy. Like EVERY style is sold out.
I may have to make a trip to Bills Gun Shop and see what the used stock is like...

As Evilore said, finding ANY at a reasonable price will be hard right now. I would also agree with their recommendation for an S&W as a good first AR. I would also put Springfield and Ruger in that same quality/value. Remember ARs are like legos, you can convert to what you like later. Just make sure you have a solid base.

AK pattern is great and all but I would start with an AR pattern. S&W and Ruger are good options for a first time buyer.

And yeah, everything, everywhere is sold out right now. Find a store that does FFL transfers in your area and take a look online. You buy online, they ship to your FFL, you go to FFL fill out paper work for background check. Also make note of any laws (threaded barrel, pistol grip, mag limits, etc) in your state.

I like the Mini 14. You can tacticool it or make it look like a fairly conventional hunting rifle. Not as accurate as M-4 based platforms generally but it has a better feel overall for me. Hopefully you’re not in a state like mine, good luck getting a weapon.

M&P 15 is a good starter AR (It's what I started with) but I highly recommend building your own.

I've built two so far. One AR Pistol and one AR-15. It's not hard at all and you'll probably have better luck finding the parts in stock vs. the pre-assembled AR.

I may have to end up doing a build considering the difficulty and pricing currently. Gonna go check out the shop now. Ask about stock etc.

EDIT: Just got back from the shop. They had 3AR's going for like 1,600 - 3k. Then one weird looking AK that had a Dragunov style grip/stock.
The dude was like, "yeah I hate to have us lose business but go buy one online". He said he would waive the dealers holding fee of $50.

PSA has great ARs, you may be able to buy an assembled upper & lower from PSA for less than an M&P. The price of everything is crazy right now or out of stock. 223 is 50c+/rd.

The "lower" is the only part that you'd need to buy from a firearms dealer and would require a background check.

You can also check Gunbroker, buy the gun online and have it sent to your local dealer. Most shops will just run the background check for you for a small fee.

Double triple check all of the parts & tooling you need. Make sure to get extra detentes & springs. You'll need a vice, a large Newton wrench, & a high quality armorers wrench for putting the barrel on. Alternatively, you can have a gunsmith do that, but they are known to take their time (sometimes months & months). You'll also need a torque hex screwdriver if you plan on getting a free float hand guard or attaching a scope. Dont forget shims for the barrel nut & any muzzle device. If you do the barrel yourself youll have to put it on & take it off a dozen times to get the gas tube & upper receivers alignment just right.
