Are new 360s now safe from 3Rlod?

my ole buddy kicked the bucket (xclamp and all) and as pissed as i am at MS for shoddy hardware, i'm totally dying to play gears 2 after seeing gameplay...

but is it safe to buy a current iteration 360? what have they done to fix the issues?

thanks in advance!

I believe they are safer, but not inept from the RROD.

I know they have fixed some of the heat issues and the air flow. Honestly, buy the 360. It's a great machine.

I don't think 360 will ever be 100% safe from RROD, after all, it does signify a general hardware fault, which could happen to any console really, the problem is the % that have failed is far higher than it really should have been.

My 360 is only 2 months old, and has shown no signs that it has any failiues incoming, but I cannot shake the feeling that it one day might fizzle, but hey, that is what consumer law is there for, if the thing kabooms, Zavvi (The store I bought it from) will sort me out, no biggy :)

i know it is! gears of war is my favorite game, and i would rush back out and buy one, but i'm a little tentative at this point.

so is there a store in the USA that is generally recommended for hardware purchases? better return policies and such? what about specific serial numbers? anything to watch out for?

thanks.... i'm nervous as you can obviously see

There will always be a shot, because of the dumbass case design.

Who the hell thought it'd be smart for the GPU to be directly under the disc drive? For that matter who thought concave would work?

The DVD drive always craps out in mine. Happened with my last 360, happening with this one now (3rd one). Disc randomly stops spinning, and then the 360 wonders why the disc is unreadable.

Even if they do fix the overheating issues, it seems like all sorts of different problems keep popping up anyway.

costco... they offer a 2 year warranty, but you still get a 3 year warranty against any RROD issues so long as you don't open the thing up...

I *just* bought a Falcon, but i'll probably sell it without the HDD a couple of weeks before Jasper and then buy it.

Not buying any XBLA game till then.

Take a look at the death thread for 360.

In the figures so far are 1207 dead / replaced 360s, 6 of which were falcon models. Of the falcon models that have broken; 4 were from drive issues (oddly all present at purchase) and 2 were from video problems (image stops displaying).

Only 6 dead falcon models on GAF, so it seems they are significantly better. Probably about as good as any console.

You probably don't have to buy a new one, there are 3rd party repair shops out there. Get it fixed for about 50 and trade it in for 150 or so.

Link to thread? And does it show how to tell what type of 360 you have?

thanks everyone... how will i know if it's a falcon? i'll check out that thread....

It says "175W" on the side of the box, instead of 203W (at least on the european ones, I just bought one two days ago).

Looks like it's the same in the US:

I've yet to hear of a single problem with the Falcon which isn't to do with out of the box issues, so seriously, just buy it.

Funny thing is that that sticker on mine bought just this week doesn't mention either 175w or 203w, though it's a Falcon as there's mentioned 175w on the power brick.

I'm in yurop too.

Not only on GAF. Falcons dont die that easy, but the rrod will never go away 100%, no console in this world is 100% safe from failure.

No piece of electronics is ever safe from breaking, but yes, the console is now being made much better now that it used to.

omg :lol is this how people are referring to the 360s poor quality now?

My last 2 360's have lasted more than the other 4 combined. I would say they are way more reliable now.

all i heard from falcon owners seems to indicate that the system is safe now, it runs quieter and the heat is normal.
175W mentionned boxs and unmentionned boxs are falcons.

All the latest 360 boxes are like that. I think Microsoft got wise to us.

My launch unit continues to hum along nicely. Absolutely no problems thus far. Just how long will it last?! Who knows, but it certainly is exciting to find out.

Actually I e-mailed Costco about this - 360s are covered under the "satisfaction guaranteed" non-time limited warranty, not the 2 year warranty for electronics. So you can bring it back whenever it breaks and walk out with a new one that same day (assuming you keep all the packaging/cables/crap it comes with). It's definitely the place to buy it if you don't want to shell out more for a store-based warranty and don't want to deal with MS's repair service.

Make sure that if you buy a Premium, it has an HDMI port. That would mean it is a newer model.

Same for me :)
I swear to god if it breaks when the warranty runs out T_T
I WANT TO PLAY BANJO

My HDMI model seems to be trucking along nicely.

I treat it kind of rough too. Leave it on while I'm doing other things, etc.

What breaks the 360's (at least the pre-Falcon) are the constant on-off cycles, the best thing you could do is keep it 24/7 on.

are 360's safe from Rhode Island?

Nobodys ever safe from Rhode Island..

No, but seriously, I came in here to post something rather important regarding the MS's repair service, your only covered under their warenty if you get it repaired by them and only them, meaning if you take it to Costco to be repaired under your Costco warenty then MS won't honor the 3 year warrenty any more. The best thing to do would be to get a replacement plan that actually replaces said console rather than repairs your old one, that way not only can you send it back to MS anytime it gets a RROD but everytime you replace it your covered for another three years from MS...

I think in the RROD thread, people have only reported 6 falcon deaths (4 DRE and 2 Video problems). Of course, people who have falcons dying might just not be reporting it, but that's still a big improvement from the older models.

Same here. I almost wish that it would RROD just so I can get a unit that is quieter! It's a beast when trying to watch movies quietly at like 1 or 2am.

Falcons still fail, as reported by other forums too.

That being said, it is at a much lower rate than previous iterations of the 360. You should not feel uncomfortable buying one, nor should you wait for the next iteration later this year if you are planning to do so.

On the other hand, you should be worried about drive issues instead, since that isn't covered by MS's RROD plan.

so what store has the best warranty? i could buy a costco membership for 50 bucks, i've heard target has a good policy, what do you guys think?

So when MS sends me back my 360 will it have the falcon chip in it or will it be the same architecture? Are repaired consoles more reliable than they previously were?

It will likely be a refurb with the "1st gen" architecture. They can't just dump all of those away afterall...

As for reliability, MS recently started putting on a new type of heatsink/heatpipe solution, which, assuming that it improves heat dissipation, should improve reliability. In theory, anyway.

In my experience, the falcons (the newest hardware revision) has been the worst of the three (launch, Zephyr, and Falcon). Yeah, I realize that's anecdotal and that generally speaking the newer systems are less likely to RRoD, but if you have to buy a new system for full price I'd just wait for the redesign/revision coming in August or whatever...plus there are rumours of a price drop due to April's numbers sucking ass, so you may as well wait... At the very least you'll save some money (on something you already paid for) and/or be another revision away from the RRoD.

ALSO, I know it's common sense, but go Arcade if you already got the HDD...or not. I dunno.

How do you figure falcons are the worst build?

Read the line after that (hell, read the rest of the paragraph)... I was saying as a warning of sorts -- more to emphasize the fact that he may as well wait for the next revision (which is fast approaching and should be out before the fall line-up anyway.)

...realistically, what would he gain by re-buying a 360 right away? Being able to play NG2 as soon as it drops?
