Are political threads allowed again?

No. There's tended to be a bit of a wiggle room with "no politics" rule where if mods want to discuss the topic then it's allowed. So I guess don't bother with political threads that haven't been made by a mod and be careful about what you say in those that have.

Greenland (or Canada) considering (or discussing) joining the US isn't a political thread, it's international news.

Nah. It's political. Of course it is. It's a Trump policy proposal. But it's such a fucking dumb idea that'll never happen, it's safe to have a thread about it, making a few jokes.

Right? I don’t even know why he’s wasting time and political capital on being a troll. Leave the “Canada: America’s Hat” shit to wanna-be internet edgelords.

People elected him to address serious problems, not poke Canadians or Danes, or talk about renaming bodies of water. The only random international policy he’s mentioned that I think has any validity in discussing is reacquiring Panama Canal.

I'm 100% into Canada joining the US and I think it's a fantastic idea. I don't know enough about Greenland, so I don't have much of an opinion about it.

But being in Canada currently, alot of people in Canada I've talked to about it are into the idea. If it will happen or not down the road, who knows...but it's 100% causing a discussion around here that has quite a bit of support. That said, I am planning on moving to the US as is, so personally I'm good with it.

It's all one big avoidance measure to stop people talking about how he's thrown MAGA under the bus in favour of sucking up to Elon.

Look, when the boss posts the thread, you walk through the door and don't ask questions....as long as it's in that same thread.

Mind if I ask what province you’re in? Just curious. I can’t imagine a lot of people in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia would be enthused about their provinces becoming US states. Conversely, I can absolutely see people in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon and Northwest Territories wanting to be part of the US.

But maybe I’m wrong.

Ontario.

Things are changing rapidly here, Ontario isn't as left wing and/or anti US as it use to be. I have a bunch of employees (10+) and most of them (over 50%) were into the idea when it came up.

But I agree with Quebec, they would never go for it.

I think you have a wrong read on the man. I believe he likes applause more than anything else. This kind of obviously impossible proposal is very much in line with his rhetoric, and some of his supporters like it a lot. For that same reason, it's not a waste of political capital for him. It's typical Trump. It would be weirder if he wasn't doing it.

I get it’s on brand for him and I don’t have an issue with that, particularly. I call it a waste because it distracts from real issues and the behavior hands free ammunition to his opponents to use against him when real matters of import are brought to a vote. 🤷

Way back when I was in Jr. High (mid 90's) I was reading some Shadowrun novels. I specifically remember the mention of the "United Canadian and American States."

Canadian here. No one I know has any interest in this whatsoever. And if they do- they are free to move to the US.

If it's something serious enough or amusing, I think it deserves a thread, even temporarily. News and politics can be hard to untangle unfortunately. I see lots of joking out of the greenland thing, so I'm fine with it

I'm in QC and in my circle I'd say it's 75% that would absolutely do it, me included. Tbh though, we don't really fit politically in this shithole of a province.

But if you ask any boomers, no way, they still want independance :messenger_tears_of_joy:
