Are there any AI chatbots around that don't act dumb?

Just wondering while bored at work.
Tried out a few, and they all come across as retarded or bored.

if this is the state of AI, I don't worry about the machine overlords overpowering us all too soon.

I work in an AI company, and that is not what commercial the main stream AI is developed for - chatting or communicating to humans is usually side AI projects or for hobbyist, simply becouse there is not much money in it.
Our AI is extremely clever but it only was trained to predicts distances and calculate paths in real 3D environments.
And many AI companies doing same things, traning AIs to solve problmes quick and efficient to earn money quick and effcient.

Not that I have found. I had fun with chatbots for awhile, then I tried to make my own on one of the websites that was made for that purpose. There were no dialogue trees or anything like that, basically I could only make it respond to certain questions in certain ways, or respond to certain keywords, or you could make an extremely scripted one. I wanted to make one that seemed interactive and slowly build it up based on people's responses. I wanted it to have follow up questions or take certain actions x time after y subject was brought up, I also wanted it to take initiative and start doing stuff every so often regardless of whether the person kept talking. I couldn't do any of that. I should probably learn to program this sort of thing, but it would take a lot of time away from my other hobbies.

They probably are bored if they're being forced to talk to a guy who's bored at work.

Siri, Cortana and OK Google wanna chat. Would you like to know more?

I remember Eliza back in the 80ies, which was one of the first chatbots, so to say.
It was a very crude basic listing for the C64.

But honestly, most of what I have found when searching a bit wasn't that much more impressive than what they had already achieved back then..

No there are not. AI is so far behind where many believe it is. I have a project a few of my engineers are working on to have predictive test results (ie highlighting potential failures before a service is deployed and thus tested) While I am far from an expert it really seems that AI/ML is just able to crunch numbers and recognize 'patterns' more or less. Depending on the application that can be all you need (like mine). But chatting is far too dynamic for any current AI to hang with.

Tay was too good for this world.
