are there any cool places on the internet to discuss movies?

with IMDB boards going bye bye back in 2017, is there anywhere left online to talk about movies?

I remember spending some time trying to find a horror board specifically years ago and they were all super super super dead. so I've given up on that, but movies more broadly would be great.

is our best option through apps like Letterboxd, etc?

I always enjoyed reading them boards after I watched a film I liked. Why did they close it?

No.

Visit The Movies You've Watched Lately thread, it's quite active and people regularly engage in discussion about all sorts of films.
Agreed. That thread has some good discussion and a variety of films being talked about. I think the "you've watched" aspect is good too since it helps limit the culture war focus you see in other threads because it keeps the discussion to people who have watched the films they're talking about.

What about your irl friends or family?
I wish that were true in my case :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Me: Want to watch this or talk about it?

Wife: Looks shit, I dont like it

Me: But you have never seen it and its an epic Sci-Fi full of mystery, intrigue and excellent ideas? The best film in decades, some would say?

Wife: Na, looks shit

Me: Well what do you want to watch?

Wife: Dunno, you pick something..

What about colleagues, siblings, friends, online friends, extended family?

For me having different tastes from the wife is a blessing. Gives us an opportunity to have more interesting exchanges and have alone time without annoying the other.

I've been chatting about the recent movies I've been watching in some of the social threads so not ideal for you but when it comes back, that could be a good place. A few others chat about tv shows too.

imdb forums were incredible. zero moderation, the wild west. the shit i used to post was insane and i was pretty tame compared to most

IMDB sidestepped the culture war by shutting their forums down.

But as a result I hardly ever visit IMDB anymore so no more ad money browsing discussions.

It all went to GAF

Sometimes it's best not to seek consent.

When picking movies.

A Community thread might be best, keep out the low effort troll posts. General "whats coming out this weekend?" stuff is good for the movies thread here in off-topic, but if you want a deep dive on a controversial film, either a specific topic (and maybe enlist a mod to help thread ban folks shitting it up) or a community thread might be best.

Have kids. I have been rewatching a while bunch of movies with my son who is now 13 and old enough to watch basically anything that isn't overly sexual, and is interested in anything that has plenty of action.

My recommendations would be:

blu-ray forums are great.

Also avforums are excellent

I've had decent luck introducing my son to 80's/90's action films. Commando, Total Recall, Cloak and Dagger, King Solomon's Mines, Explorers, Goonies, Red Dawn, Princess Bride, T2. The practical effects combined with primitive (to us now) special effects is endearing to him. versus the super saturated CGI environments we see today.

Obviously some of these films have a few minutes you gotta fast forward through but it is what it is. The violence is largely LESS shocking than that what we have today, even the super squib syrup drenched Total Recall.

Explaining 80's tech (or the lack thereof) to him has been an unexpected joy. What is a land line telephone? What is a fax? Why can't these guys just call each other? How can you just walk right to the airline terminal? What are those big boxes on every desk and what is that rattling sound everytime a computer has to do anything?

I'm hoping he'll be ready for the lighter horror films soon, but he is a bit of a chicken in that respect. Gremlins, Lost Boys, Fright Night, LOTLD, Bram Stokers Dracula, maybe the campier NOES films.

IMDB was the best because each movie had it's own thread, so you could discuss details and other obscure stuff about a movie with people who were specifically interested in that exact movie.

If i want to discuss about why a certain character did a certain thing in a certain movie that isn't popular enough to have it's own subreddit, i'm out of luck.

We always have a laugh at the distant future of 2015 or whatever that appears in a lot of 80s/early 90s movies.
We have done a lot of similar movies plus stuff like Predator and Predator 2 (forgot there was brief full frontal nudity in 2 during a sex scene, oops), Alien and Aliens, Starship Troopers (more nudity, but no real sex), Robocop, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, Enter the Dragon, some Jackie Chan movies, Running man etc.
We have done Halloween, that's probably a good horror to maybe try as it's pretty tame really.

If you only want to read to negative opinions, usual GAF discourse is like us

"I liked this thing"
"Let me tell you why it's shit!"
"He must be a shill!"
"Thinly veiled politics comment"
If someone is capable of articulating why they think a film is shit, then that is actually a good thing for anyone else that is curious to see said film. And I disagree, it's not only negative discourse.

It's her, or the inlaws :messenger_neutral:

Get a divorce.
Hell no :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I've been eeking this in. I'll just stick something on, muffle out the ten to fifteen minute whinge, kick back..

Explain the end at the end. Everyone's happy :messenger_tears_of_joy:

He's farrrr too interested in other stuff to sit with us old farts!

In regards to the topic..

It's Gaf. Gaf is the best place, people here will talk films :messenger_ok:

I still miss the IMDB boards. Yes the large ones were 99% garbage and trolling, but for more obscure films you could find some gems and have some great discussions about them.

Film Threat with Chris Gore is a good show to watch.

I did, too. The reason is that it was 2017, and Amazon (who owns IMDB in case you didn't know) decided that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze to have chat boards where people could speak their minds freely. It was either increase moderation (EXPENSIVE!) or shut em down (CHEAP!)

Yeah, that was around the time when shit posting and straight up toxic aggressive stalkery behavior just took over even nerdy topic boards like imdb.
