Are there dimensions higher than the 4th ?

Plies

What can we conclude from thinking about dimensions greater than 4? I think physicists have shown with experimentation strong evidence that a 4th spacial dimension may exist. But do dimensions greater than 4 have any logical purpose outside of pure math?

You see, I've been talking to a guy named Teddy who has been ranting about some of his views on dimensions.
He goes step by step assigning qualities of reality and imagined possible realities to each dimension beyond the 4th.
Is this magical thinking?

I have never heard a person of science plotting anything out quite this far without evidence. I take the following from what he said to be the summary. Any thoughts?

1 - Length
2 - Width
3 - Depth
4 - Time/Duration
5 - Alternate realities from present time (causally connected)
6 - Alternate realities from big bang (parallel worlds not causally connected)
7 - All realities using all possible rules for physics
8 - All impossible rules of physics
9 ?
10 ?

String theory, specifically M-theory, which unifies various string theories, is formulated in 11 dimensions (10 spatial dimensions plus 1 time dimension). Here's a concise breakdown:
  • Standard string theories (like Type I, Type IIA, Type IIB, and heterotic strings) typically require 10 dimensions (9 spatial + 1 time) to be mathematically consistent.
  • M-theory, proposed in the mid-1990s as a unifying framework, extends this to 11 dimensions. The extra dimension helps resolve dualities and inconsistencies between the five 10-dimensional string theories.
  • The 11 dimensions in M-theory include 10 spatial dimensions (most of which are theorized to be compactified or "curled up" at extremely small scales) and 1 time dimension.

I think I need to borrow some of Elon's ketamine before I can start thinking past the 4th dimension.

The third book nearly expanded my brain to the breaking point. It was the closest I had ever come to be able to visualize more dimensions. It's not the best book in the trilogy, but still my favourite, it just throws crazier and crazier shit on the wall omg I love it so much.

I read all three books last year and loved how weird they got

My favorite sequence is Metallic Tear Drop ramming into thousands of spaceships in ten minutes

I read somewhere the universe really might be in the shape of Hyper-Torus Universe Model and combine this with String theory and the podcast says scientists claims atleast 9 dimensions.

My unverfied theory reading space for over a decade says definitely universe has more dimensions what we have able to detect. We can't see or detect shit on a quantum level and a whole lot of crap is there.

No way its just 4. A quantum level civilization might be able to detect more.

Another good part was near the end when they find that guy on I think it was Pluto or Neptune and the guy started talking about how time tends to erase a civilization existence perfectly. Like storing media especially tends to degrade over time and get lost was interesting to read since that's been happening recently to lot of older videogames stored on carts and disc based storage mediums

Also weapons that can force 3 Dimensional Spaces to turn into 2 Dimensional Spaces was out there too. Not being to control them either was interesting twists since even the destructive power is God Like, that alien species won't be able to stop it since once unleashed it is ongoing. So in a way they do have limitations

Yeah, there were so many interesting concepts that the author just kept throwing out and then jumping to the next one. It was overwhelmingly awesome. My favourite weapon was the one you mentioned, the lowerdimensionifier.

This, the current dimension is probably the "only" dimension where things are cohesive enough for a sentient being to experience; sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. Yes, there may be other dimensions but I don't think humans can experience them as it would be like going into an event horizon towards a black hole. Cellular structures would break down molecularly or even reverse, flip around, turn inside out. Maybe those other dimensions that exist are the foundation(s), structural support that allows this dimension to exist in the first place. That said, humanity should not intermingle with other dimensions, not even for a moment. We all know what happened in Doom and in the movie (and book), The Mist.

Ok but not to bring down the level of discourse but if 3 dimensions go in the XYZ axes where does a 4th dimension go?

Dark matter and dark energy? 🌑

Yeah a big part of it. Lots of theories and opposing views.

I honestly believe the origins and what's before the universe is something that exceeds our comprehension. There's only so many problems you can solve on chalkboards that are miles across, but I think its beyond that.

There's a point where a chimpanzee is simply not capable of understanding things, we also have a threshold and its looking us in the face everyday when we look up.

I do think AI will have a simplified version for us digest in a few decades, but even the 200 iq crew will be puzzled.

oh, ok. Then i guess i'm asking about the 5th one
It goes to a place where it can observe the 4th dimension; there's no point in trying to visualise it since you can only think in 3 dimensions.
A good way to attempt to explain it is an animation of a hypercube:

space physics GIF

A square is a line where another line is connected to its ends, a cube is a square where another square is connected to its edges, a hypercube/tesseract is a cube where another cube is connected to its edges, this is a "4th" dimensional object.
What you are seeing in the animation above isn't the object itself, but the "shadow" it casts while moving through the 3rd dimension, just like how a 3rd dimensional object casts a shadow that's 2nd dimensional:

Shadow GIF by Dior and I

If you were a 2 dimensional lifeform and you only had access to the information of the "shadow" of the 3rd dimensional object, it would appear to be as strangely warping and moving as a 4th dimensional object appears to us in the 3rd dimension.

The "black hole" cooper falls into in Interstellar is basically a 5th dimensional object made sense visually for someone in the 3rd dimension:
