no, but the price plays a role of course, if all the food looks crappy I guess I'll get whats cheap or chow on some rolls

first off, difference between cheap and thrifty.

now, i always tip a good amount. I was lucky as hell to get the job I have now, and before this I was waiting tables and delivering pizzas.

I cut coupons because, why the hell not?
that's seriously free money, not that hard while you're watching tv or something and can save you lots.
I buy things on sale depending on how much I want/need it. usually a sale is what will push me to splurge for it.
I don't usually look at the price of an item on a menu, because chances are, if you have to look, you shouldn't be eating there (except on special occasions.)
And no, 1 buck will not make my day. haha
 
Medium. I rarely pay full price for anything, but I don't automatically go for the Blue Light Special either. I do try to be thrifty when it counts - with BIG expenses, and also with small expenses that recur constantly. Examples:

- I buy soda by the case and carry a couple of cans in my backpack rather than spending the extremely high unit prices at a vending machine or fast-food place.
- If I can't get a car below invoice cost, I don't buy it.
- I go out of my way to visit an Arco gas station that only takes cash, but consistently has the lowest prices in the tri-city area by about 3 cents.
- I ditched the insurance provider my dad had and switched to 21st Century to save $500 a year.
- If I have a game I want to sell, with each and every individual example I'll weigh each option I have - BB trade-in, Amazon sale, and Ebay auction - and decide which one would put the most money back in my pocket.
- Same thing when I want to buy a game. If I can get it brand-new for cheap anywhere, that's easy, but I'll always consider a used game as long as it's complete and well-priced.

That depends on whether it's a $200 item or a $2 item. If it's a $2 item, I'll probably be smiling at the register, but after that it's business as usual...

I don't get the tipping thing, we don't really do that...things are just more expensive. The only place I see tip jars are at coffee places, and i'll tip if the people are polite.

In redguards to cheapness I generally buy things because I want them rather than because of a sale, etc. But i'm not above buying a secondhand game if its 20 bucks cheaper than a mint condition one.
I tend to go overboard buying expensive books when i could just go to the library, because I want to own them.

Do you pay the minimum tip at a restaurant? - Nope. Base rate begins at $5 and moves up, even if if $5 is passed 15%.
Do you cut out coupons? Nope, I just bring the whole paper if need be.
Do you only buy things on sale? - Only things I would have bought on impulse years ago (a few videogames or movies)

My wife and I live within our means. We save on average around $700 a month through automated deductions from both our paychecks and checking accounts into our stock and mutual fund accounts.
 
When it comes to groceries, i'm definitely cheap, because I don't really eat alot. I buy almost everything on sale (unless it's Korean stuff, like chajang myun/kimchee noodles, etc.), and get all kinds of coupons my mother cuts out when I go home

For clothing, i'm only somewhat cheap, because alot of the time you can buy a certain season's styles on sale midway through the season

For gaming i'm not cheap, because if it's a game i've been looking forward to i'll buy it when it's released, and they're hardly ever reduced then. Only if it's a game that i've had lukewarm interest in will I wait till a price drop to buy it

Regarding tips, i'm also definitely not cheap, only because I'm afraid they'll remember me and spit in my food or something next time :lol
 
I come from a non tipping country and I fucking love it. Tipping is the worst idea ever. I'm pretty sure that doesn't make me cheap though, I'll do it when i'm in a tipping country (apart from fucking it up I'll do what others do). NZ restaurants have a tip option on the bill, I'll never do it. Not once ever.

I'm not cheap but I resent money surprises. US has that in SPADES buy something "oh sweet 15 bucks" get to register "I'll just add this tax here sir...." what the hell. put it on the tag.

as for sales and the like, if it's on special, bonus, will only use a coupon if I notice a coupon for something I want. don't wait for sales and specials.
 
I know that imagine was supposed to be a joke, but I do a lot of those things...

Especially the movie thing. Why in the blue hell would anybody go to a non-matinee showing? Cheaper, less kids! Win.

But at restaurants I spare no expense. I think you notice a trend between those who have worked as waiters in restaurants and those who haven't as compared to the sort of tips they leave. For example, I usually leave at least 30%, about 50% if I just get something small (tea, appetizer shared amongst friends, milkshake). I mean, serving is a pretty bust-yer-ass job, and since they get $2.38/hr (minimum serving wage), you've just got to tip well. Well, I mean, unless the service is poor. And I mean, JUST the service. Tip's still on if the food was cold/bad or if they explain that something messed up or the cashier added something wrong. If they were rude, didn't provide adequate refills, that sort of thing, then they'll get a lower tip.

Yeah, I was totally confused when I went to Singapore and tried to tip the bellboy. O_O He took the money regardless, but he gave us the strangest look. Supposedly, a service tax is charged instead of tipping, which I think makes more sense than tipping.

But yeah, I'm pretty cheap when it comes to buying food, furniture and clothes. Buying higher quality and more expensive stuff would probably be smarter thing to do in the long run...
 
Uhh, i was always under the impression that paying 15% tip is pretty standard. If the service wasnt' exceptional, do people actually give more? If so, why? If you're really that concerned with spreading the wealth, there are a variety of charities where the money would stand to benefit others a whole lot more. The fact that you came into contact with a particular person neither makes them more deserving nor does it make what is essentially a donation any more effective. It's an inefficient allocation of charity, so to speak.
 
No, 15% is standard, I just know what it's like to be in their shoes. I know that when I work at the restaurant, I was stoked when I got a nice sized tip. It made me feel as if, yeah, I was doing a great job.. and, usually, it wasn't for anything (to my knowledge) past being personable and getting everything done with normal precision.

Also, sometimes the server doesn't get a bunch of tables per day. Sometimes, I would get 7 or 8 tables for the whole day. So, once again because the the experience, I feel it's better just to tip a little bit more rather than just the bare minimum. And if people tip the 15% around me, it's fine, I just like to tip a bit more.
 
i go cheap with my car (it's a POS but it runs), clothes (i'm usually at work anyways), but food is one of those things i won't go cheap with. When it comes to buying food, i usually buy brand names or just better quality things than what the average person would buy, which is usually filler-based crap. When it comes to eating out, i always tip well, unless the service is poor.

Yes. And I've saved thousands of dollars doing it.

When I can afford to wait for something to go on sale I will wait. So for the most part yes.

Always. Its one of the first things I look at.

Oh yeah, I'll change my own oil even if it takes an entire afternoon. I only take my car in to the dealership for the major inspections/services.
 
Yes, but I'm bad at it. Like I'm really thrifty and buy stuff almost only when it's on sale and hardly ever buy games above $20... but I buy a lot of things.

I tip 15-20%. I rarely tip above that, and rarely tip in cups. I'll throw a quarter in there once in a while when I have some coffee or whatever. I'm not rich. I eat in restaurants a lot, but food is usually too expensive anyway, so I don't have a lot of cash to put on tips. 15-20% is just enough not to make me look like a dumbass.
 
I'll tell you what cheap is: my old roommate would actually keep count of his cans of tuna and confront me when one of them was missing. And that's pretty much all he ate.
 
I am glad to say that I am not cheap at all. I earn a good amount of money, so I spend a good amount of money. I always give others money and tell them not to mention it etc, unfortunately I can easily be taken advantage of. Women are cruel.
 
I wish I was more thrifty.

I spend about $20 - $30 a week eating at work cause I'm too lazy to pack a lunch

At restaurants my base tip is also always $5 and up depending on what the total is.

Same goes when I go get a haircut.

Don't cut coupons.

I dont even want to talk about clothes. I love Italian dress shirts, I have a nice Movado watch ( i got it for $500 marked down from $800 so I guess that is an example of me being thrifty) I have a ton of shoes mainly Air Max 95s, Diesel, Kenneth Cole dress Shoes

Videogames I usually always buy new.

I am kinda cheap on gas though

Certainly. You can save good money that way.

Not really, but I will glance at it. I typically don't buy the most expensive item on the menu. Bad form and shows no class.

Yes i am cheap, i never spend 50 bucks on any game, i dont care what it is, i aint never doing it, its a rip off. I never spend 30 bucks on a game either, the highest i will go on a game is 25 bucks, but 20 is really my limit.

Yes all new games should be 20 or 25 bucks. Most people say the so call AAA titles are worth 50 bucks and they are better then 9.99 or 5.99 games, but those same AAA titles which people are playing 50 bucks for, sometimes get bad reviews, not only that, the price on them drops to 5.99 in a matter of months.

So either way, i say play the game smart and spend cheap and be happy. In the long run, people be better off if they spend cheap.
