Around the World in 80 Days

It's not starting until the 26th on the BBC, but I'm gonna nab the thread as Around the World in 80 Days is my absolute favourite story.

The casting for this looks great (love a bit of David Tennant) and the production quality at least decent.

Around the World in 80 Days really lends itself to adaptation, so this should be another one to add to the collection.

This looks solid! Just looked it up, it is on PBS of all places in the US! Damn I will have to break out the rabbit ears and tune in at a specific time like ye olden days!

Huh. So is "Abigail" Fix secretly a detective investigating Fogg? Are they writing out Aouda?

Looks like it may be a "name only" deal. Still looks kind fun.

This is one of the few stories that I'm okay with significant parts being rewritten.

Ultimately, it's about getting around the world in under 80 days in the Victorian era. The main characters need to stay, but other than those points it really doesn't matter.

Obviously any adaptation could still be bad while sticking to those points, but the casting for this one reassures me.

I love the Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan film for context. And while it's not an adaptation really, Palin's modern one is great too and keeps the spirit.

Looks fun, but with DR Who as the main character it should be around the universe in 80 days.

I love me some David Tennant, let's hope this will be good.
Also, you're all probably going to hate me for this, but I frikkin' loved this version with Jackie Chan as Passepartout:

It had Arnold in it, they made him play the lute and dress up like this:

All these adaptations make them fly and it just doesn't feel right to me. Why not adapt Five Weeks in a Balloon instead? It has spectacular setpieces too.

If they want diversity, The Southern Star (also translated as The Vanished Diamond) is a damn good adventure book with characters from all around the world.

Yeah, I love it.

That film is Ronseal: Does Exactly What it Says on the Tin. A comparison I'm sure Alan Partridge would be most pleased by.

I get the feeling you don't know what's so magical* about Around the World in 80 Days. And really, it doesn't matter if they fly or not. They add it in because they can make it look cool.

*and it's even with it being really morally dated in a lot of places.
