I'm not sure which forum to post this in, but Off-Topic seems to be fine.

When I was driving out for my second run at work today, listening to the intro of Alicia Keys' "Diary" Intro track, I was thinking how it'd be an awesome song (as an instrumental) to use for some dramatic opening sequence in whatever videogame that might be developed.

After thinking about it for some time, I thought there'd be a few other instrumental tracks that could possibly be good for a video game soundtrack.

Cardigans - Erase and Rewind
Garbage - T.W.I.N.E Remix
Garbage - Subhuman
Toni Braxton - In the Late of Night
N.I.N. - Closer

What are some of your picks?

Anything by Slagsmålsklubben!!

If anyone deserves more fame, these guys do. They would be perfect for the gaming industry, I really can't describe how awesome these guys are.

If you don't know what songs to get, just get the "Den Svenske Disco" album. You really won't regret it.

Aaron Mandel reports:
We rarely have full tracklists for records seven months before their release for the same reason that we haven't yet nailed down our plans for New Year's Eve 2010-- although if you know any good parties, feel free to hook us up. Video game development takes time, though, which is why game/music cross-promotions leave us with news spanning a nearly precognitive time-frame.

And so we pass that early, strange, marketable news on to you-- in the summer of 2005, Aspyr Media will release Stubbs the Zombie - The Soundtrack, featuring some of your favorite focus-group tested favorite bands performing covers of songs from the 1950s or earlier. This is all, as you may have guessed, connected to the upcoming release of Stubbs the Zombie in "Rebel Without a Pulse", an XBOX/Mac/PC game. Players will slake the undead protagonist's hunger (or so we assume) to the sound of these tunes:

01 Ben Kweller: "Lollipop"
02 The Raveonettes: "My Boyfriend's Back"
03 Death Cab for Cutie: "Earth Angel"
04 Rogue Wave: "Every Day"
05 Cake: "Strangers in the Night"
06 The Walkmen: "There Goes My Baby"
07 Dandy Warhols: "All I Have to Do Is Dream"
08 Oranger: "Mr. Sandman"
09 The Flaming Lips: "If I Only Had a Brain"
10 Clem Snide: "Tears On My Pillow"
11 Rose Hill Drive: "Shakin' All Over"
12 Milton Mapes: "Lonesome Town"
13 Phantom Planet: "The Living Dead" (non-cover, but zombie-themed song)

The anachronistic feel of the soundtrack extends to the game itself, which is set in 1959, but takes place in a World's Fair-style "City of the Future." Imagine yourself as an inhuman monster bent on revenge, trashing a proto-Epcot Center while Wayne Coyne croons you a song from The Wizard Of Oz. That, my friends, is high culture.

The bands were given substantial leeway in suggesting songs for the project, with nudges by Aspyr's producers. But it apparently didn't take much nudging, as Nick Harmer of Death Cab had this to say: "We absolutely had to be a part of it. We had such a great time recording "Earth Angel" for a zombie game that we even decorated the recording studio to look like a 1950's prom just to get us in the mood. Thankfully, we didn't have to eat each other as well."

Thanks, Pitchfork!

Honorary Canadian.
Wu Tang Clan- Pinky Ring
Tomoyasi Hotei- Battle Without Honor or Humanity (cliche, yes, but awesome.)
Stone Sour- Monolith (imagine during a boss fight)
Redman- Smash Something
Powerman 5000- Supernova Goes Pop
NERD- Provider
Kid Koala- Static's Waltz
Kanye West- Jesus Walks (Just the beat, forget the words)
Any DJ Shadow
...I'll find some more later maybe.

Personally, I'd also like to play a version of Soul Caliber 2 to the theme of Growing Pains... "As long as we got each otherrr...."

Air - a new lemmings game

That would be awesome.

I think New Order could make a good game soundtrack. Underworld as well.

Old R.E.M., with a bit of the country/folk sound and the instrument use of Automatic for the People would be good for a game.

I'd love to see Clint Mansell do a game soundtrack. When they were making Perfect Dark, I wanted Portishead on the soundtrack.

Let's start with some labels all music licensors should have in their Rolidex:

Warp, Plug Research, Big Dada, Ninja Tune, Merck, Stone's Throw, Mush, Lex, Bubble Core, Thrill Jockey, DFA, Def Jux.

Portishead would be great for a certain style of game. The videogame world already has their Portishead though in Silent Hill's composer (Akira Yamamoto sp?).

Yup, Warp & Ninja especially.

Actually, I'm kind of hoping Unity would have a Warp soundtrack, but yak seems to obsess over Underworld.

The thing I loved about the Katamari Damacy soundtrack was its incorporation of very contemporary glichy beats.

Your Underworld example is a fine illustration with the game industries fixation on the music and art styles of the 90s.

Wow...outstanding.

I think some old Orbital or Underworld (minus the vocals) would be pretty intense stuff too. I've always wondered what kind of game would go with "The Box" or "Dirty Epic."

I've always thought that the part of 'Fucking in Heaven' by Fatboy Slim which doesn't use the lyric would fit perfectly with a Toe Jam & Earl game.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Tiesto (of course), BT, Orbital, Underworld, Sasha... most electronic artists, it's pretty surprising that this kind of music isn't featured more in games.

I was just going to mention Rhapsody, dammit.

They'd do some awesome RPG soundtracks. Especially the battle themes.
