As a Black guy should I be using a Shaver or a Trimmer?

Ive always gotten my shave from my barber. But recently he started charging me for the cut and shave. So to save costs I got a Phillips Aquatouch shaver. After using it I got a shitton of razor bumps. My friends say it could be poor shaving technique and also pointed out that they all use trimmers because of our hair texture. Should I switcher to a pair of trimmers/clippers or just work on my shaving technique?

Wait what exactly are you shaving? Your beard or hair? I cut my own hair and then go to the barber for my lineup.

It all depends on how close a shave you want. Black people aren't necessarily barred from using any particular method.

I use a razor for the closest possible shave. You stop getting bumps once you've trained your hairs to grow a certain direction, and I use a special shave cream with shea butter for moisture protection.

Get a double edge razor. I got one around the time this thread was made as a gift and haven't had a razor bump since (I shave my face daily).

Bevel. only real solution

Regular razor on my face.
Electric clippers on neck.

Usually the hair on your face will be straighter than the hair on your neck/head. In that case as long as you go with the grain it won't bump.

I've been hearing them advertised on a lot of black podcasts I listen to lately. Are they actually good? I'm interested in a shave solution made specifically for people with coarse hair.

i listen to the brilliant idiots podcast and Charlemagne Tha God was pushing it hard, i caved and tried it, only had it for three weeks but its doing the job nicely. id definitely recommend trying, havent had much skin irritation as of late.

Rod that you?

lol

I look at this and feel like it's just a reaction to the dollar shaver movement, except now directed towards the blacks. I used to use a special disposable razor that supposedly prevented shaving bumps. This looks like something like that, teamed with some wet shave products and a fancy shaving brush. But the shaving brush looks suspect, since real silvertip badger brushes can go for $100 and up. I'm guessing they didn't sink 70% of the costs into the brush.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but this just looks like a company's attempt to cash in on Wet Shaving that I just linked prior, only they are charging you 30 dollars every three months for their branding. You can get a DE razor, a pack of 100+ blades, and a brush for around the same price or less on Amazon and keep them for years.

Edit: What akira said.

If you have to clean shave use this right after. Works like a charm. Wish I knew about it when I was younger.

I've tried that shit so many times. Does nothing. Am I applying it wrong or something, lol?

I shave, wash my face with a hot cloth to get it nice and clean. Splash of cold water and bump patrol. Only applied after a shave. Shave my face 2-3 times a week.

I'm not black but I have very thick facial hair especially my mustache area. Wet shaving has worked for me once I got the technique down and I've heard it recommended for black men often. I'd give it a shot.

If you do get into it, like most I would recommend a sampler pack so you can see which blade works best for you. I will say however don't let anyone intimidate you away from trying feather blades. Those are basically the only ones that don't feel like it's pulling my mustache hair. My wife even uses them in her razor for shaving her legs. They aren't as scary as a lot of people will make them sound.

Don't use a razor...Use either an andis T liner or invest in a very good electric shaver. I use the braun Series 7. Its a bit pricey, but the shaving is God tier!

I've always hated the electrics and just use whatever the latest Gillette is (e.g. Fusion) with no issues. I shave not on my face, but my entire head with it.

This has been a Godsend

OP: Use a high quality foil shaver (anything Braun Series 5 or higher) and you'll be golden.

This is exactly what I use. The one in that picture is a Braun Series 7 Foil Shaver for anyone wondering. It gives a fantastic shave without any bumps usually. I will get a few in a couple spots if I go over the area too much.

The only methods that didn't end with horrible razor bumps were using clippers (andis t) and a safety razor with TendSkin. Everything else (even just using a safety razor) ended terribly after a day or so. That includes regular razors, electric trimmers, bump patrol, etc
