I think the joke was supposed to be that he was resentful and tired of working all the time while she sat around at home and did nothing all day.
You can see this play out oppositely in season 4 e1, where Al gets to sit around all day while Peg gets ready for a cookout and watching her work makes him horny and he goes at her multiple times during the episode, and she doesn’t want it anymore.

The sad thing is we will never ever see a series like this ever again and the closest thing you will get to that type of humour is a cartoon series like Family Guy or Southpark

Never found Family Guy funny, gave up on South Park as just wasn't interested. Watching the film in the cinema though ... was nearly coughing blood with laughter. "Uncle Fucker" was amazing.
EDIT: Had pneuemonia again. The gods must love me or torture me. Either way I seriosuly laughed watching that film in the cinema.

I seem to remember discussion about a mortgage in a few episodes, but it has been a looong time. Al is a working stiff, the writers wouldn't let him out of any debt or bill, life is supposed to be crushing his soul.

Fantastic show. Super rewatchable. I watched every single episode a few years back when it was on Netflix and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Except for the couple of episodes that were meant to be backdoor pilots.
