As of July 18, 2025, Microsoft no longer offers movies or TV shows for purchase or rent

This ISN'T an Xbox:

Sony closed their music subscription service on ps3, they also closed their movie service on ps4 and then made a new one on ps5.

I'm not sure why they think we should be paying for these digital files if they're just going to eliminate the drm players later.

I never understood the fascination with watching movies on your game console. Yes I'm one of those that use my game console to play games and have never used them to watch movies / Youtube / Twitch or other nonsense on them. Yes I'm that guy.

I could be way off base, but I feel most people use Apple/Amazon to buy movies and then use the apps to stream movies and shows.

No one I know uses either console to buy a movie.

Thank Christ. The Xbox store here was plastered with anime and other shows that always resulted in an error when you actually opened the pages because they were US-only yet still appeared outside that region.

If they actually made one aggregated interface that has access to all your subs and kept the snap feature. It would have been awesome. I hate having to use Apple TV search to find out what service something is on.

MS looking at Google for the past decade and said "wait….we can just stop supporting stuff and kill it randomly?"
Well, Nintendo did something even worse with WiiU and 3DS and no one really complained (I'm taking about the whole digital store).

Which means, digitally speaks... noone gives a damm if 'only you' uses something.

Even Walmart, the largest retail company in the world, couldn't figure out how to make digital movies and TV profitable.

How are people playing physical media like Blu-ray and DVDs?

I use my console, but are people still buying individual players? What's the point when your console does it

Their movie prices are usually higher than Apple's prices and their sales aren't as good so no wonder it's getting shut down. They refused to compete. I also don't think they've got an easily accessible app that you can download on any streaming box.

Heh. still, I never used their ecosystem for tha.

I buy my digital films generally from Google these days since they play on Youtube which is available on virtually any device under the sun, and also playable right on Youtube TV.

Not sure why anyone would buy/rent stuff off their console. Are these files even readable on other platforms or OS?

If not and you're a digital consumer for TV/movies and want to buy/rent you might as well do it through a bigger platform you can use with more flexibility like Google or Apple downloads and use it on those devices.

I use my console for movie discs, but some people will keep their old DVD/BR set up for ages. Especially true if they want to watch an old disc in other rooms as most people have one console. So keep a media player in those rooms. Or have an old console that runs discs there.

Never understood why people "buy" movies and TV shows through any walled garden service. That goes for Xbox, PlayStation, any of the storefront streaming apps like Amazon Prime, Google Play, etc. it's all a form of shitty DRM and they could yank what you "bought" at practically any time.

If the only option is buying a show from a single walled garden, I'd rather turn into Captain Jack Sparrow.
