As of July 18, 2025, Microsoft no longer offers movies or TV shows for purchase or rent

Remember, TV shows and movies were never suppose to be owned at home. Copyright holders only ever wanted to rent their shows. VHS ownership was only a thing because it was before Digital delivery, and they HAD to sell to the video rental store. The VHS was priced with the viewing license included for the sake of Blockbuster.

But people who love movies agreed to pay the extreme price premium that VHS had. And this caused the creation of film and TV show private ownership. And studios HATED IT.

If they could, they will force everyone to rent again. And part of that is how they don't care to protect your video library.

Probably the only people buying TV shows and movies on Xbox were the likes of those using Microsoft Rewards points.
They have some good sales sometimes. I buy whatever is cheapest on whatever store front that's out there. The movie also has to be movies anywhere compatabile so I can access all my digital movies no matter what storefront I got them from in one place. I think the last thing I purchased was the entire Friday the 13th movie franchise for like $5.

I never understood the fascination with watching movies on your game console. Yes I'm one of those that use my game console to play games and have never used them to watch movies / Youtube / Twitch or other nonsense on them. Yes I'm that guy.
For some people the console might be their main media player. I don't buy movies that much anymore but the collection I had is pretty much all with Apple now.

It's kinda crazy to think any cloud platform holder would cut off ways to make money off digital purchases.
But the game recording and Xbox cloud is still terrible too so I guess being a cloud platform holder doesn't guarantee anything.

Purchasing movies from Sony or Microsoft was always strange, can't imagine many people used it.

However, I understand people who use their console as a streaming device. My FireStick broke and I use an XBOX Series S as the living room streaming device.

It's always been an issue. I believe the same happened with Sony as well.

If you're going to shut up shop then at least let people move content over to another platform.
Every shop does this and this is how its always been over a decade now. If consumers dont want to deal with that they should buy Blu-ray discs.
