Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

I think it is going to be pretty common for the more demanding "next-gen only" games going forward. I don't even think Unity runs that bad considering how good it looks. I can't run Crysis 3, Dragon Age Inquisition or Far Cry 4 any better on my GTX 970 and those games don't even look as good.

I predict that games like The Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight and The Division will be just as demanding. Unity just had the misfortune of being one of the first truly "next-gen" games.

If the trend is going to be sub 30/sub native res on consoles again, then you're probably right. I expect Witcher 3 to scale pretty well since they have a ton of PC experience, though max settings will be brutal.

I think the game is CPU bound, hence why you're in the 30's and he is in the 40's. As far as I can tell, the game makes use of hyper-threading.

Yeah, I think you're right, The Witcher 3 will probably scale better than ACU does, but with all advanced graphical settings turned up it's going to be pretty damn demanding.
 
There is a strange thing that happens in this game. When I first start play there will be weird hitches at moments like when a guard sees me or the last known position first appears but after playing for a few minutes everything smooths out and the hitches disappear. It's like it caches something and suddenly the performance becomes very consistent.

Yup, I'm seeing the same thing. Not a big issue, but it seems like something should be thrown into memory at an earlier point maybe. It goes away completly though, unlike the stutter in Watch Dogs and FarCry 4.

I have the feeling the game leaves some performance on the table on PC, and I have no reason to believe they will ever try to improve that.
I guess we are expected to brute force our way through, as usual.
 
Detailed Release Notes for Patch 3 (all platforms)
Patch 3 includes over three hundred fixes designed to improve your Assassin’s Creed Unity experience. While you might notice some improvements to framerate as a result of Patch 3, we still have a future patch planned to further address framerate concerns.

The rollout itself will be staggered across platforms and will come to PlayStation 4 tomorrow (Wednesday November 26th) and continue on to PC and Xbox One later in the week (though not necessarily releasing on a daily basis).

In many respects it does but it's not perfect graphics wise by any means. For a game of that scope I can understand.

As I've stated earlier the game runs "well enough" by my standards (35-60fps, average 45), only question mark is how big of an impact tessellation will have on performance. I'll have to trade PCSS for added geometry most likely.

What annoys me though is that the game isn't scalable enough. There is only a 15fps difference between absolute lowest to maximum settings (without MSAA/TXAA).
Only AA modes seem to drastically impact performance.

I agree with that. ACU looks better than either FC4 or DAI and it runs about the same on my PC. Actually DAI and FC4 have still have some minor stuttering that hasn't been resolved, while ACU runs solidly for me.
 
The trick with setting the priority works for me. I can even put the textures on High without any stuttering. (GTX 760 2GB). FPS capped at half refresh rate with NCP.

Both will be decent for graphics.

ACU is actually smoother for me than FC4 (both locked at 30fps with RTSS).

Neither are that smooth. Dragon Age also has decent (great) graphics but isn't smooth.

I got Dragon Age and have been playing it. But sounds everybody says the Ubisoft games look better overall when compared to DA. Been getting mostly 60fps with almost everything on Ultra at 1080p.

I would go for ACU next but just bare in mind they'll be two really great games, going to be hard to switch between them.

ACU has incredible lighting, NPCs don't look too hot though.


Tried downsampling with Dragon Age?


TBH far cry 4 is damn good too.
 
I hadn't played this in about a week but I just launched it and I the same settings I had previously running at 27-30 fps consistently. Now it's in the 15-20 fps range even when I lower to 1080p and turn down a few settings. Idk what broke it because I don't think there was patch. Maybe it's on my end, I haven't played any other games either to tell.

Hope my system didn't get messed up because there was a really bad storm here yesterday and I left it on while I was at work.

Unity will be the better benchmark especially when/if the tessellation patch comes out

Far Cry 4 is a damn good looking game but its not that much of a leap over the already existing far cry 3

Basically if you want the game to max out and be playable now get far cry 4 if not get Unity
 
No matter how I set my settings (GSync on/off, Vsync on/off), ShadowCopy adds a little judder to videos I capture of AC Unity. Judder I do not see while playing. Anyway, I'm going to upload a video of a variety of location to demonstrate how consistently it can perform as long as you have the hardware (this is max settings except I'm using FXAA, 1080p). Based on what I'm hearing about FarCry 4 and DA I, it seems like consistent performance is harder to achieve with those titles. It is very demanding for sure and they did a lousy job of making it scalable and the LOD and pop in are still ridiculous. Whether it justifies the requirements with its visuals is subjective but unlike a lot of truly bad ports, it is possible to get 60+ fps consistently on existing hardware.

I disabled GSync and enabled in game vsync for recording using ShadowPlay. Framerate and frametimes are in the upper right hand corner. I'd recommend watching 1080p60 of course. I tried to capture different locations and crowd densities.

Ugh. I hope that's just a sign that they are going to be making the game more scalable with more options and that's not going to be something forced on everyone. I'm not really playing this game for it's compelling story or gameplay. The beautiful world is why I'm still playing.

eh thats ps4. id imagine even if there was a downgrade itd be exclusive to the consoles.

I kind of feel like the dev team is in panic mode right now. I hope the changes to the PC version are reasonable and optional. However, when they are being told to get the game to perform better immediately, undoubtedly, after months of already trying to optimize for performance during crunch prelaunch, I don't expect miracles after a few weeks. Getting patches out now, I feel, may be more important than well thought out PC specific optimizations. I hope you are right though. We'll see in a few hours, I guess.

I'm not sure about the console versions, but at least on PC the global illumination changes all the time, so it might not be easy to get the same lighting in screenshots.
 
FXAA is now bad, There is no more TXAA X2 and X4 just TXAA, also there is now MSAA X2, X4 and X8. Draw distance and pop in are same and for me game runs worse for some reason on same settings.

It's just pictures taken at freaking different time of day. There's a thread about this. Don't believe everything you see.
 
Works fine over here. No apparent difference on performance, but then again I didn't expect one given the patch notes. Going to have to play a little longer to see if the occasional freeze I had is still there.

Did notice this new carriage though, fast travel to Dead Kings DLC whenever that's out. I didn't have it before as I didn't buy the season pass.
