Atlus tweets "You won't have to explain the Mature scenes to your roommate or family when playing in handheld" regarding Catherine on Switch

I could maybe understand this comment from the uninformed, but whoever's running Atlus's twitter account doesn't give the game enough credit. Next to Persona 4, I honestly think Catherine may be my favorite story by Atlus. There is an element of sexiness to it, but I never thought it was handled really perverted, or immature. If anything I'd say it's actually handled very mature, and meant for "mature audiences" for more sophisticated reasons. It's such a unique game in that it tackles the subject of commitment and relationships in a way I've never seen in a video game before. It kinda handles them in fantastical ways, but it still has characters written who feel very real.

Even the Full Body version caught me off guard with how well it handled certain things in the new content. Spoilers:

The third love interest they added for the game, Rin, for those who may not know is not quite a woman. She's not a traditional transgender character either, because she's technically an alien, but I think it's pretty much established that she is a very feminine male. There is a moment long after Vincent and Rin get close where he comes in on her unconscious in the shower, and sees her naked, and discovers she has a penis. This shocks Vincent to the point that he slaps her hand away and says to not touch him. This hurts Rins feelings and she runs away. The game is about choice, so the outcome depends on you the player, but regardless if you pursue Rin or not, Vincent feels terrible for how he reacted to her anatomy. And if you do wish to pursue Rin, you do every thing you can to get her back, and don't care what she is on the outside he just loves her. It's so weird, but even as a straight man, I found Vincent's writing in this scenario to be very sweet and kind of him. Made me root for their relationship almost more than the other two.

Anyway, my point is that just because a game has sex, or sexy elements in it, doesn't automatically equal = this game is meant for perverts. That's such a dismissive way to look at it, and if anything, the people who would say that I think are the ones who need to grow up.

Catherine is set up like ghost story about someone dying in their dreams, i would say this game has much more “horror” element from the way the bosses look instead of being “lewd” game.

The only thing I hate about Catherine, are the puzzles.

That's the only reason I quit playing, because everything else is amazing.

I understand the puzzle section is not everyone's cup of tea but I LOOOOOVE the puzzles gameplay, in fact Catherine is my favourite puzzle game.

Should we bug them like the port beggars do?
It wouldn't matter, Atlus will do what they want regardless what everyone else says, they are in their own little world.

It's also the best 'down the pub with your mates' simulator I've ever played.

Honestly, the weird supernatural horror elements aside, it's probably one of the most intelligently written and mature games out there.

Most of it's themes and narrative just will not work properly if you've not experienced that late 20's/early 30's pressure to settle down, start a family and 'grow up'. Even it's horror elements are all based on very grounded, real and normal fears.

It's just an amazing game, and the only arguably embarrassing part of it is the overly cartoony art style.

If you're going to get weird about and embarrassed by it's scenes, I'd say you're either too young, or too immature and lacking in experience to understand it, and really shouldn't be playing it.

It's not that it's bad, I just don't have a lot of patience (also the reason why I've never completed a Soulsborne game) and them slapping a timer on it is just pushing it. Lol

I'll admit that the concept was pretty cool.

Ugh, that fucking site...I swear to god.

So full disclosure here, but I originally saw this tweet through resetera, and I reposted it here mainly because I wanted to praise Catherine. Before I made this thread here though, I had replied to the era thread with something similar to how I started this thread. I made a similar point about how I thought the scenes with Rin were well done, etc...well over night I got a reply to my post, and I swear to fucking god those people...

I think I still make good points regarding how progressive and well written Rin is as a trans character, but it's never good enough for these fucking people, is it? "Ohbut it was still a transphobic scene" because he reacted emotionally to seeing that she had a penis. fuck off era, jfc.

NOTHING is ever good enough for these people. It's always about more more more, and not see the positive in what was done right. It's always about what's wrong with it. How it doesn't conform to their ideals and their ways.

I remember I posted in that thread as well. And I pretty much vomited. Those guys are beyond help. I am banned but also check the Nadine - Laura Bailey VA thread. Those guys are insane.

That Rin is worthless to me though. It defeats the original triangle story that worked perfectly and felt complete to me. You can not convince me that none of those guys would act out shocked and might do or say something completely wrong if he finds out his date has a dick. Jesus man, I luckily never experienced it but I would freak out as well. No, those guys would suck her dick because "its all good, I accept every human being no matter the gender.. I love you". Yeah right. I agree they should celebrate the fact you can even pursue her. But no, they fainted the moment he slapped a hand.

But what those guys should be going mental over, is that she looks completely under age. I dismissed her right away. She is not half as good looking as Catherine or Katherine and also looks half their age. Fuck Rin.

They hate everyone who doesn't go with the hysteria and doesn't take a stance against any world issue they feed their crowd. First its SJW, then MeToo, then BLM, now AngryJoe etc and tomorrow its something else. Look hard enough, and every studio probably has an ass on their pay roll so they should ban all publishers and developer studios as well.

Because this community's marketplace is not active enough lol. I needed to sell some games, and not one of em were sold through here.

Yea, the game is well written, paced, acted, and wonderfully animated. A fantastic game that doesn't get enough love because it is either "wank material" or "transphobic" by detractors on both sides (both of whom need to fuck off).

I like the humour in the Atlus tweet. That's funny.

"Transphobic". Such a bullshit term. Like anyone has a fear of Trans. As Catherine has been labelled "Transphobic" by those peadophiles, it must be doing something right and I may have to check out the re-release.

On Vita we wouldn't have to explain them either.

Well, at least the game is available in English for people who hack their Vita.

Nah, that's art because it isn't made by Japan.
Thats something that always bothered me, western devs can getaway with full nudity in their games but Japanese games cant.

Even Japanese games can't have cover of someone pointing gun but in western game like RDR2 can.....why?

I remember Era having a tamtrun over the slap scene. Lol, their rage was equal to a spoiled little brat. They were so retarded that they forget the main character can go after her, regardless of what she is.

Anyway, I think the problem is that most of demented people from this age still thinks games are for kids. Movies for instance can be very mature, but no one bats an eye on them complaining about violence and stuff. Games on other hand are already tagged as something for kids....its kinda cultural I guess. So when games have those mature sections(violence, nudity, etc), people blow up their minds, with pre-made catchphrases like "wank material".

I pretty much appreciate Atlus as developers. They have made a big name for themselves.

On a sidenote, nothing is more annoying than those fucking port beggars. Really, the scum of society.

There really is some unspoken racism towards Japanese games in the game industry. I don't wanna call the lynch mobs like era, but someone needs to speak up about it. I don't know if having a gun on your cover affects sales. Considering how immature some people are, I wouldn't be surprised if it does to a point. What's even more bizarre is this is self sabotage and the decision had to have been made by someone in their own company, but in their US office.

Same thing with this tweet that I made the topic for. Someone on ATLUS West's twitter who thinks they work for a company that just makes pervy Japan games.

That is very, very true. I like how games like Witcher 3 and Mass Effect had full on sex but it considered being "mature" but with Catherine which didn't have barely any nudity most people call that game"porn/hentai game"when the game first came out on PS3/360......whats is the logic to this? is it because it has anime artstyle?

Pretty much....anime is for perverts, don't ya know? you gotta make sure your characters are ugly and unfeminine. Then you're not pervy, you're "brave".

Even the "naughty" scenes in Catherine were really sophisticated. The only time that people are naked in the game (and you never see anything), is when Catherine keeps waking up next to Vincent, and he doesn't know what the fuck is going on. He's fighting with his libido, against the idea of commitment. There are a lot more layers going on during those scenes that most shit that happens in the other games that you mentioned.

Even though I liked the original Mass Effect games quite a bit, the sex scenes do ultimately feel like a reward for just pursuing the person of your choice.

Am I the only one confused about what this issue with this one tweet is? I assumed the tweet meant that the parent or roommate isn't watching you play the whole thing, but rather walked in on a certain type of moment and thus have no context to it. Plus, it would imply the parent and/or roommate is the one with the issue, not you the player.

And maybe some of you got more open-minded parents, but yeah even in my teenage years my religious parents had zero tolerance for me watching anything with sex scenes or even heavy implications in it. Fuck, watching American Pie when I was 18 was basically my Sex Ed since I went to a private high school. So actually yeah, them walking in during certain moments, yeah that wouldn't have ended well for me.

As for the angle of "it's mature-rated, so either minors can't play it or parents who buy it know what the content is and don't mind their kids playing it anyway", I think some of you are clueless to how truly ignorant some parents are. Like just google that classic story of the clueless dad who rented Ninja Scroll for his kids at Blockbuster (and then had the nerve to come back to yell at the cashier despite the cashier warning him about the mature content). Or how many parents blindly bought GTA games for their kids.

Well sad fucking thing is that back then, everything was fucking normal. Now you can get there some Millienial or fucking zoomer telling shit, like "I don't even know the pronounce* of the enemy". Fuck take me back

*my 2020 MacBook Pro does not have this on touchbar hint, so good on you Apple. I hate that overpriced piece of shit, but this is the first time it made me at least chuckle.

I'm not gonna deny that maybe I'm reaching here, or making a mountain out of nothing. I just feel like it's stupid marketing tactic for a game that is way better than it's own publisher is giving it credit for. Anyone else would have the freedom to say something stupid like this, but they are doing a disservice to their own game by misrepresenting it.

I hated games that treated me like a horny 13 year old when I was 13 years old. Some stupid porno like scene weirdly aged at teens would come on. That would always be the moment someone would step in and same "ew what are you watching".

i dont care anymore.
