Anyways, after 3 episodes I'm not feeling AoT too much. Don't get the wrong idea, I don't think it's at all awful, but there are several things that bug me. I think the show does an alright job with the sense of hopelessness, but the melodrama at times is almost comical. Starting with the commander-guy in the first episode breaking into screaming WE ARE DOOMED or whatever. I also felt the comedy with 'potato girl' was dragged too long as well. First scene was amusing, but then they had to have her brought back two more times in the episode and I couldn't help but

.

And the dub is iffy at times too, many of the bit parts especially. Papenbrook didn't work too well for Young Eren but it's alright for teenage Eren I suppose. I understand that Armin is quite different from JP Armin but to be honest I think Grelle's performance there is the most consistent of the major characters. Mikasa's too quiet to really get a read on. We don't have a lot to go on yet, though. My favorite English voice so far was Eren's mother. I thought she sold the episode 1 end very well. Relatively unknown VA too.

Anyways I'm interested in seeing more. Perhaps my expectations just needed to be set differently. Not really a matter of 'I was too hyped', just needed time to get a feel for the tone and whatnot.

I will admit the over dramatic yelling just sounds way better in Japanese. lol

I cringed any time the over dramatic yelling came up. I loved the show, blazed through it in about a week and a half on netflix, but I couldn't help shake this feeling that there was something even more special underneath if the creators cut back on the over dramatic expositions and relied more on subtlety to showcase the character's emotions.

Maybe I just want more out of the show than what it is going to end up giving me, but when considering the depth of the background of the world that has been created - from the history to the subtle tie-ins to Greek titan mythology, it just seems it deserves more... maybe?

I don't know.

Tough to explain how I can like the show as much as I do, but still have a lot of problems with the delivery?

It's shonen, gotta expect it. I don't mind it, that mixed with the epic music make the scenes amazing for me and get my adrenaline pumping.

Humanity is on the brink of fucking collapse, jesus. Wait until you meet the more hardened members of the military.

I want to know why they don't they call them The Survey Corps in the dub? Isn't that what they use in the manga?

I'm surprised how much I like this show. I watched this last year, and I still get chills from the dub version of the trailers now.
God, anime is really coming back.

The emotional parts do sound kind of strange in the english version. I am watching the japanese version week by week along with the english version.

Kid Eren's voice is a little annoying, but that's temporary.

I'm digging the dub so far. Then again, I'm not one of those hardcore sub or death type of people. I think they really nailed a lot of the more intense scenes so far.

Nor am I....I'm actually the opposite - I'd rather watch an anime dubbed over subbed any day, but for Attack on Titan it just sounds really off. Hopefully it grows on me.

I really enjoyed this series. Some pacing issues in a few places but still very good. Has there been anything mentioned on the next season?

Contrary to what most people say, it never really went anywhere.

Really? Jojo is back[argueably might have been the real catalyst of this resurgeance], Mushishi is knocking out an awesome second season right now, Ippo is back, The Gurren Laggann team is back![Kill la Kill], freaking Watanabe is back [Dandy is entertaining me, anyway], and more than a couple really interesting shows waiting in the wings.
Don't know about you, but I haven't been this entertained by anime in years[and years].

I'm a dub guy and I've been watching AoT on AS. Just finished Episode 3.

Now, I can see what people like about this. Some good design, cool modes of traversal, some interesting characters. However, Eren's pretty damn annoying so far and somehow I doubt the overall plot and mysteries are going to be resolved in any acceptable way. It already feels pretty illogical but I'm holding out hope there will be explanations that make sense. I just hope I don't get to the end and say "Fucking really?!" over and over again.

They tried so hard to sell the humans=cattle in pens thing but it just doesn't work for me. Eren says "All we do is eat and sleep" but people are also working, hell, that is what he is doing right after he makes that statement. Furthermore, there are children running around and so people are obviously mating. So you've got eating, sleeping, working, communicating and having a family. Shit, that sounds like life anywhere, in or outside of the wall. I dunno, it just feels like the whole premise of the show was cooked up so that people who look for deeper meaning can scratch their chins and come up with allegories.

I'll stick with it til the end, of course.

Depending on what you like, there's solid stuff all the time. Only truly awful year was 2009 or 2010 or something (can't remember which).

I think most people could find at least 2-3 shows a season to watch if they just looked.

and sort through the mounds of bullshit in the process?

its easier to just call it dead and wait for anime to be saved as it happens

So a friend wants to get into this anime and I told him to forget it because it's a waste of 26 episodes because you never find out crap about what the hell is in the basement. Did I give him the right answer?

Tell him to watch the anime and then get caught up on the manga. Then he will suffer (but not true suffering; that belongs to those who follow the HxH manga)

No. Some of the most entertaining things don't explain shit or make any kind of sense.

The dub is doing a poor job of selling the show early on. I know you prefer dubs, but I recommend you watch the first 3 episodes in Japanese and see if you still feel the same way.

As far as not being hooked so far, don't give up on it yet. You cannot stop now.

You misunderstood. I'm saying that quality anime has always been around but most people are under the false assumption that most anime in the past few years only consists of moe and harems.

Dub episode 4 was amazing with the cabin scene and Eren/Jean in there. The highlight of the dub for me so far, and then that scene before episodes end
everyone blushing for changing to side with eren after his effective passionate speech
. Im starting to like it more than the sub.

It was a really strong trend for awhile and scared some people off though, but that's not what I was talking about in my original post.
Do you not feel anime is not even in what you might call an 'upswing' at the moment? I'm not completely blind to what comes out, I've dipped back in every once in a while and found a couple okay shows over the years[Darker than Black, NHK, Mushishi 1], but it's been quite a while since I've seen stuff that's gripped me this much as the current output seems to, and coming out so fast. It seems whenever one anime finishes, another one starts right up that's in my wheelhouse.
So, it's all subjective, but the 'resurgeance' let's call it is definitely real in my book.

That's how it's been for a lot of people for a long time. You just need to look at the Anime of the Year threads to know there's stuff people enjoy all the time. The spring and fall seasons are generally pretty hefty as far as good shows coming out are concerned, even if the good:bad ratio could be better.

I believe quality anime is still being produced every year, regardless of whether or not many people are privy to it.
I've never been at a loss for good shows regardless of season but then again, maybe I get too easily attached to stories and characters. 2010 (The Tatami Galaxy, Katanagatari, House of Five Leaves) and 2011 (Steins;Gate, Madoka Magica, Usagi Drop, Penguindrum) were especially strong years, I thought.

I can't wait to see everyone's reactions for episode 5 in the Toonami thread this Saturday, though that next episode preview they got was absolutely ridiculous.

So, i just started watching this on Netflix....and i saw the blu ray part 1 was coming out in June. Anyway, only one episode in, and i dont really watch anime other than the films that make their way over but this seems like it could be really good.

What is the story with it as a series? Seems there are 25 eps in season 1, and part 1 disc release only has 13 eps. Is this getting another season or is this a complete series on its own? I fear ima marathon this show now....

Manga is still ongoing. It leaves at a stopping point (not a cliffhanger or a made-up ending.)

This show is pretty fucking bleak. Im on episode 8 now. Only real problem i have with it is it has a lot of what i don't like about anime, which is the insanely introspective melodramitic rants characters go on for some of the most obvious things. Never was a fan of that. It is frustrating because the art is beautiful, the action is pretty good, and there are actually some really great ideas in the story. Plus being so bleak adds a certain quality to it. Will finish the season as im enjoying it though.

I watched Shingeki no Kyojin late last year, and I'll admit I really liked it. It was appealing to me, especially considering I hadn't watched anime in awhile. And true to their nature, not long after TeamFourStar made a beautiful abridges series of it, which I still adore and quote like a lamer to this day. Q u Q

But I will say that it was definitely hyped up much more than it needed to be. Although it was good, and the characters were lovable and whatnot, it becomes a bore when you have hypsters spewing nothing but conspiracies and theories and spoilers about it. @@;;

But I'd encourage those who haven't seen it to watch it! -- If you mind blood and violence. //;;

Wow! The English dub is pretty good! Watching it on AS now and I'm impressed! Oh the feels as Erin is swallowed by a titan as Armin screams in horror.

As Dubs goes this stands out for me as the first one where I have to make distinction between the writing and voice acting. The reinterpretation of various scenes plays off better usually than how it is expressed in Japanese but the voice acting is much weaker. For example that scene when Erin is shouting (when isn't he) at the asshole calling all the refugees freeloaders. The Japanese dialogue was pretty annoying because the asshole acted like he didn't know what he said wrong but in the English version he owned up to it.

It's distracting that they are being given better material but only Mikasa's VA is carry her weight. On a side note, Armin's voice sounds very forced like those exaggerated characters in kids cartoons.
