Australia bans another title

Narc Banned By Australian Authorities

The Australian distributor of Midway's lurid '80s arcade game remake NARC has announced that the console game has been refused classification by the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification.

Red Ant has confirmed that this means that NARC, the morally ambiguous VIS Interactive-developed title which allows players to either behave angelically as a good cop, or take drugs and misbehave as a 'bad' narcotics officer, will not be released in Australia at all.

Apparently, the OFLC classified NARC with an 'RC' (refused classification) rating in accordance with Part 1(d) of the computer games table of the national classification code, which relates to: "1. Computer games that; (d) are unsuitable for a minor to see or play"*. A seven-member panel of the Classification Board determined, in a majority 6 to 1 decision that Narc be refused classification.

Red Ant further commented: "The minority view of the board believes the impact of the game is justified in the context of a game based on busting drug dealers. Unfortunately the majority of the board did not agree that NARC was justified within the current highest [Australian] classification rating of MA15+."

Although the game has had a somewhat lower profile in North America, questions regarding NARC surfaced in the Australian press before its release, with it being referenced in government debate, and Electronic Frontiers Australia renewing the call for a MA18+ rating to be instituted, since Australia is one of the only major Western countries not to allow 'adult' classification of games.

The OFLC has previously banned Vivendi's Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, singling out "obscured and/or implied sexual activity and obscured and partial nudity involving stylised, animated characters", and Rockstar's Manhunt, citing "scenes of blood and gore that go beyond strong."

Notice that they're only banning shit games? Maybe they've just got some gamers in the government, looking out for their people.

Stop it Australia, you're making NZ take notice :(

You AUdiots are all the same.

WTF? This doesn't even make sense in the context of this discussion... Where ANYWAHERE in here did it mention ANYTHING about Nintendo or fanboyism? If it's there I'm missing it.

Did you forget your meds or something, you seem to be delusional...

Go leap off a ledge now.

Go on... go do it.

Crazy little bastard.

BTW, fitting avatar for you akascream. You seem to be pushing the pull door on this one.

He's actually pointing out that you can be an AU fanboy and not actually live there...not agreeing with him, his 'logic', or any of his posts...just pointing out what he meant

Thing is nothing I posted (nor has anyone else) smacks of AU fanboy-ism.

I guess I'll have to break it down for him slowly...

is "there" correct?
In some other sentence, sure

Damn you Australia, now the 13 people who would have bought it will never be able to play it. Good publicity for the title, now it'll sell 20,000 more copies in the U.S. I thought Aussies were cool, what's up with this banning crap? Didn't they ban Manhunt, GTA3, and few other titles?

Just a thought...

I feel bad for Australian somewhere. The message i should perceive here is that there' no adult mind in Australia that can deal with heavier content in medias? Are your TV news censored too?
I'm happy to have government that let me choose instead of telling me what i should like or not...

I take it you're not from the states.

I think the aussie problem comes from them not having a 18 rating for games? Correct Aussies? So it becomes a legal problem. NZ has banned a couple of games (Manhunt and something) but the non censored GTA became a major selling point here. "UNCENSORED, NOT LIKE AUSSIE!"

Seems like only the crap games get banned anyway :lol

I agree that NARC is indeed a crappy game though.
I'm from Canada and i perceive that people have quite the same options as us in USA (except they seem to have less socialist laws and gov services). Am i wrong??

Manhunt was banned after it had been out for like four months, so everyone who wanted it had already bought it by that time. GTA3 wasn't banned, they just had to cut out the hooker bashing (which apparently is in San Andreas anyway so wtf). As someone mentioned the problem is we just don't have an R classification for games due to a bunch of conservative fucksticks denying any such legislation.

Judging by that sentence I don't think you're capable of perceiving much. :lol

Are your TV news censored too?

Yes, our news is also censored. In fact everything is censored. When us Australians turn on the tv it's just one blurred out picture. One of my friends was just shoved into an internment camp for being a Jew. At first I disagreed but THE MAN told me I should like it, so I accepted his infinite wyzdom.

I'm happy to have government that let me choose instead of telling me what i should like or not...

What are you, five? And being a French Canadian with inadequate English is no excuse for expressing such incredible ignorance.

You've got onto something there, here's the classifications for gaming in australia:
G: General
G8+: Ages 8+
M: Ages 15+
MA(15+): Restricted to 15+
RC: Refused classification.

N.B.: No R-rating

i feel the government (or whoever classifies the games in australia) think that video games are still for kids.

also i feel its important to point out that for some unknown reason that Mortal Kombat: Deception on gamecube is not being released in Australia even though alot of australian sites said it was.

:lol Who would have thought such a little nation could cause americans to get shitty..... hang on :lol

I'm speaking just on the surface. Now i see that i would need to go deeper into the point for you to understand what i meant. From where i stand, censorship in Australia seems to be wrong and i hope you'll realise it someday. To prohibit something may be worse than control it, there's many examples of this i could give you. I could explain this whole matter to you on hundreds of pages of text but it may not be the place. Censorship in America is also wrong you know. I just feel it's "less wrong" if i can put it that way.

And since you go personal and that i'm such a close-minded, i'm answering right away that my english is good enough imo (NORMALLY people understand me)
If you're tired of your blurred TV programs, just move to America dude.

:lol Seriously. You will have a hard time convincing anyone that's a good idea currently.

you know that tv programs aren't really blurred right?

Narc Banned By Australian Authorities

Now see, Australia has proven itself worthy to be the place where Jesus will return.

Heaven is a boomerangin' drunk arsed kangaroo,
Singin' with the angels to a digereedoo (sp?).

Meh, wasn't it's only Narc.

But I swear, the fucks better not ban or even enforce the developers to censor God of War (whenever the hell it's released here). I don't get why the twat Johnny howard and his Government is so reluctant to issue an R18+ rating. Video games aren't just for kids no more gawddamnit!

Who's worse when it comes to banning violent games, Germany or Australia? Sony isn't releasing God of War in Germany, apparently.
