The female witness, identified in a police report as Collin Thompson, told police that she had seen Chase running in the middle of the road. Thompson then witnessed an older white male get out of his car, according to a police incident report. Thompson said the man approached Chase and pushed him to the ground, after which he yelled, “Get out of here.”

The other witness, Kris Van Metter, told Syracuse.com that he had just finished a bicycle ride when he saw the same scene.

“I see a grown man, who is quite tall and fairly heavy … exit the vehicle and give this young man a shove that puts him back 10 feet and flat on his butt,” Van Metter told the news site. “Like, just shoved him across the road. The kid didn’t seem to be doing anything but standing there, obviously had nothing in his hands and weighed all of 130 pounds. This guy was easily twice that.”

“When [the deputy] asked him why he did that, he replied that he thought Chase was going to mug his wife and take her purse,” the incident report said. “MacDonald’s wife was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time of the [incident]. When [the deputy] asked him why he thought that, MacDonald told him that some youths had broke into his car recently and that crossed his mind. MacDonald went on to say that Chase wasn’t responding to him telling him to move out of the road.”

Twist ending, they refused to charge the man

He thought a kid running in front of his car IN A RACING UNIFORM was going to rob him and his wife?

He was in uniform! Flanked dozens of other runners with similar outfits and numbers!

So much for being able to allay fears with your clothing choices.

Reading the full article made this even more upsetting. I don't see how a judge looks at an adult pushing a teen unprovoked and says 'Nothing wrong here', to say nothing of the obvious racism here.

I don't advocate bodily harm, but there's a big part of me that wishes the assailant could experience the pain, humiliation, and frustration that he caused. No one deserves to feel that way, let alone a child.

Scum. Racist scum.

the more sadder ending is that he's now scared to race....

“We just keep telling him, ‘You didn’t do anything wrong. Chase is good. There are mean people and there are nice people and this person was just a mean person,’ ” Coleman said. “We just keep apologizing to him that happened. Especially me. I kept apologizing to him that I couldn’t keep him safe.”

:(

fuck this guy!!!

Scum. Racist scum.

His name and age are in the article. Hopefully this has blowback for him socially.

Probably not though.

It honestly sounds like a comedy sketch. I'm baffled how someone could fear for their lives from a runner complete with the attire.

"Feared for my life" is just code for "I decided to act on my deep hatred for black people"

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
Cool, this old fuck took the one thing away this kid really seemed to like. Well done racist asshole.

I can only imagine that there are no black biathlon athletes in the USA cause they used to get shot all the time.

Well I guess it has been settled. Chase has free reign now to get into "arguments" with old white guys according to Rochester County.

wow this made my blood boil reading the entire thing.

Just an argument between a nonverbal autistic kid and a racist...nothing more. /s

Have you seen twitch muscles activate on a black male as you are driving by with a hateful disposition? Then you'll never understand the threat the assailant felt. Twitch muscles are scary

I knew some people who had their house broken into, and they decided (without evidence) that black people from a nearby housing development did it.

They were the most fearful, paranoid people I have ever met. We drove to a restaurant for lunch and there was a black person in the parking lot, so they literally circled the block until he moved on and then they parked. It was broad daylight with people all over the place.

The entire world was a minefield for them, every black person they saw sent them into full fight or flight mode. People like that are capable of anything.

Wait, how the fuck can they deny the family pressing charges. Wtf, if they want to press charges don't you have to do it and take it forward to court and let then decide the outcome

Man I feel so bad now. The boy lost this love for running he had. This old fart ruined happiness for him.

Wow,nobody got shot. That's a victory in itself

yea but now hes kinda scared for life. Its sad when this is considered a "victory" by any standards.

edit i know your being sarcastic. (i hope) but i am just saying. its just seems we could do so much better.

Police renew probe of attack on autistic teen runner at meet.

Edit: I'm very happy to see that it's been reopened, and I hope that there's punishment to the full extent of the law. Any sort of decent human being would have apologized immediately, owned their shitty behavior, and faced the consequences. Instead, there's current persistence on the part of the assailant that it's OK for him to be a horrible person and to have ruined a great outlet for a child that needs a little extra help.

Especially because the kid is pretty severely disabled. If he's finishing last in most of his races like the article says, and he's mostly nonverbal, it's probably pretty evident even just seeing him run

Maybe the fight or flight instinct made his brain think the 824 sign was some sort of court mandated sign warning the public of how many people he's mugged.
