From Deadline....

20th Century Fox dropped very quietly a number of release date changes and additions tonight, at the top of the list is an untitled film from James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment on Dec. 21, 2018. Golly gosh, it must be Avatar 2: At CinemaCon, Cameron announced that the sequel was hitting theaters during the Christmas season two years from now with sequels following in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Are we ready to return to Pandora folks?

Are we eager to jump back into the life of Jack....Jake.....Jake Sully? Jake Sully, was that his name?

What about Norman Spellman? Remember Norman Spellman? He was a character who said things.

Aw, I secretly hoped you mean The Last Airbender 2!

Also: this will probably be up against a Star Wars film in that case. Seems like a bad idea.

And this took so long because???

Fox was willing to throw a lot more money behind it to make it a franchise, so Cameron hired a lot of writers and did several complete reworks in order to/in an attempt to create a larger coherent world and work on several of the films simultaneously.

Is Sam Worthington even an actor anymore?

The sequels wouldn't necessarily involve him, Cameron wanted each film to explore a different part of Pandora and have the various Na'vi tribes combat a larger non-human threat, IIRC.

Why? Because people will only see one movie in the theaters in a month? Its up against a non mainline saga Star Wars film anyway. Episode VIII is next year. Avatar 2 is the following year.

I wish Avatar 2 wasn't a thing that was happening. I'm probably not ever going to see it.

But what I'm most puzzled about is that they're making four, the story was so mweh, and I really don't see how you can turn that basis into four separate entertaining stories. I feel a lot of the money this movie made was because of the 3D gimmick, now that that's gone, I'm not sure I would've gone all-in on four movies if I was the movie studio.

Then again, I'm worth a lot less than 20th Century Fox, so what the fuck do I know about this shit?

Honestly, I think it's because Cameron wants his own Star Wars/Harry Potter/LOTR/Marvel franchise. Aliens wasn't his, He lost Terminator and Titanic is a historical story. That leaves him with True Lies, The Abyss and Avatar. It's all he has for his own fantasy franchise.

I'd take a return to The Abyss over Avatar any day.

Nothing hard about making a completely different story where they share the same world. Where's the imagination?

9 years for a crappy sequel.

Yes, Cameron is the master of sequels. But it's not like he's making a sequel to Alien or Terminator

Already a thread and before anyone says it (too late already see) it is NOT going against Star Wars. Star Wars in 2018 is coming out May 25th.

Do people actually care about Avatar anymore?I thought it only made 2 billions because of all the hype surrounding 3D.

For the most part, yeah, the hype was all about 3D being good for once; less so about the story. See the thread from a while back where people struggled to quote a single line from the movie without having to look it up.

What a ludicrous, silly, patently false narrative. Avatar didn't made 2 BILLION DOLLARS because of 3D. It made 2B because it appealed to all ages, it reviewed great, both critically and amongst movie goers, and because people went out and saw it and saw it again You don't have to like the movie, but there's no doubting that James Cameron is a genius at what he does.
