Avatar | Back in Theatres (4K HDR confirmed)

Will it be in 3D though? That was the entire hook of the movie.
My theater chain in Europe (Pathe) mentions 3D on their website.

Director James Cameron's most successful film of all time returns to the big screen. Avatar, the award-winning epic adventure from 2009 is re-released with 4K restored images and HDR sound. Moviegoers get one more chance to travel in 3D to the other side of the universe, to the remote planet Pandora in the year 2154.

Gotta try to recapture that overall #1 spot, huh?

Was never a big fan of the movie, but the effects were amazing at the time. 4K is probably going to be super impressive.

Just watched this again in 3D and the visuals still hold up. The Na'vi still looks good enough to be bought as a real thing then just a CGI alien and of course the 3D helps. Especially the night scenes look gorgeous. Some scenes are starting to show their age but all in all still looks great. Too bad the 3D isnt in HDR :(

ps. Michelle Rodriguez playing the same charecter in every movie she is in is quite funny though.

Ah cool! My girlfriend never saw it in 3D , and I have been raving about how it’s the best movie to show 3D because he basically invented the modern use of 3D and cinematography.

And this is 60 frames now?

Yes, but apparently 48fps and not 60fps. Meaning we won't see the HFR version at home as UHD BD doesn't support 48fps, only 60fps.
That's a real bummer, maybe there is hope for digital versions. I'll have to watch these in the theater.

Hopefully this means there is a 4k disc coming. This is James Cameron we are talking about though, the worst director for home video next to Lucas.

November.

Hopefully we get Abyss and True Lies then as well because those transfers have been done for YEARS and even streamed on HBO Max when it first launched.

I'm actually surprised there isn't a thread here about how evil Disney is for removing Avatar from Disney+.

Cameron must really want that highest grossing movie title lol. When that Marvel movie snatched it, I'm sure they snatched his heart too.

Avatar is still the highest grossing film worldwide and with the trends of theaters and streaming, it will likely never be topped

Endgame has the highest grossing in a weekend IIRC. Endgame was #1 for a while but Avatar has longer legs. This re-release will seal the deal since Endgame is a bit too trendy for a re-release to gain traction.

Disney can't do anything with Avatar without Cameron's say-so. It was him who had them pull it to have people see the remastered version in theaters. It'll be back in November in 4K.

So does the IMAX version have HFR or Dolby Cinema?

Dolby Cinema has HDR and those fancy ceiling audio speakers right?

Haven't found any evidence on this. And I have looked. There IS a possibility that when Cameron and Lightstorm transferred all the Avatar rights to Fox in 2005 they required some creative control, but that's an assumption on my end. 20th controls merchandise and products that make it to market.

What I do know is that 20th owns the Copyright and TM to the Avatar franchise. They probably do what Cameron tells them though regardless if they have to or not. They want to keep the man that's bringing in billions happy, much like Feige and Marvel or Nomura and Kingdom Hearts, but I have yet to see evidence that Cameron controls the IP that is owned by Disney through 20th.

Got my tickets for a 3D screening in two days. I have the 3D Blu Ray and it still blows me away visually, but nothing beats the big screen. Can't wait.

Fuck. Jealous of you man. Enjoy the ever living piss outta it. I wish we got that here in NZ. Checked my local cinemas and there's fuck all.

To see this again in cinema in 4k/HDR...

That's terrible! Biggest movie in the world - shouldn't be a gamble to give it a short re-run.

I'm taking a friend along who hasn't seen it in 3D or the big screen. Can't wait to see their reaction to it. No time like the first time.

My chain (Cinema City, owned by Cineworld) doesn't market it as HFR on their website and it's not on the posters either. Gemini Man was billed as 3D HFR.
However, they released official PR for the relaunch and a synopsis and about half of it is about HFR. The posters are focused on 4K HDR.
Looks like every screen across all formats is HFR.

I suppose being sneaky about HFR is one way to combat its negative perception. Then they will take the positive feeback and market Avatar 2 as native HFR - if you liked what you saw in September, the new one's even better!

This re-release sems such a weird situation to me. First off its the standard editon, not the special edition, why?.
A 2 week run, only in 1800 cinema's, no full AVATAR 2 trailer with it (talk about a missed oppotunity).

I mean i get it, its a re-release for the hardcore fans, but this could of been a nice push to 3bil but instead its probably going to make very little money.
