I shy away from animated avatars in general, except for these two I used briefly back when.

Phaneuf = god. I can't find the scaled down version I made - I ended up not using it for more than a day because getting it to fit the forum limits made it kinda sucky because I'm terrible at editing animated gifs.

Only I would work so long on an avatar that no one else would understand or find funny. ;)

There are various programs you can get that can make animated gifs. I use Ulead gif animator 5.0. I believe Imageready can make them too.

Oh, and that before/after picture of the homely Asian chick made my organs hurt from laughter...
