About Games Done Quick

For over 10 years, Games Done Quick has been a charity fundraising organization that raises money for charity via speedrunning. Volunteers play games at incredible speed ("Speedrunning") for entertainment. Our events are streamed live online, non-stop, and all donations go directly to the charity. Games Done Quick events feature runners playing games from every generation of gaming history! They play their games live, and explain in detail the many tricks and glitches they use to get the fastest times.
During our events, be sure to take a look at the various donation incentives, which can include additional challenges, new content, and even quirky things like naming in-game characters! Be sure to take a look at the list while you're filling out your donation.

I thought they always partnered with the Doctors without Borders charity? Now it's Prevent Cancer Foundation? Is there a reason for that?

They swap, agdq during the winter is for pcf. Sgdq is dwb.

This is the first gdq in a really long time that I think they did a great job with the schedule. Not tons of shit filler games that have tiny player counts just to get their woke mob runners on stream.

I still watch some recorded runs, but the days I’d sacrifice some sleep to watch GDQ are long past.
The weirdos used to be highly-functional weirdos that’d do impossible things in Mario 64 for two hours straight and catch up with the CPU in F-Zero GX after giving it a 25-second advantage.
The weirdness of the runners has only gone up, and the skill has mostly gone down. Deathless runs in NES games with some frame-perfect tricks sprinkled in to flex have become a myth. And the commentary has mostly gone to shit because of woke dictates.

Then there’s the simple fact that this thing has been going on for more than a decade, and new games have come out and the old pixelly games I liked to see destroyed live aren’t cool anymore. Glitches have replaced skill, because they allow to skip so much of modern games that would be so long otherwise (Dark Souls 2 and 3 runs are a borefest). The scene has changed a lot.

There’s still stuff I enjoy watching here and there, but the new social trends and COVID have made GDQ a very different thing.
I’m also genuinely surprised they can still make so much money; their current main audience is supposed to be broke, after all.

Now it's Prevent Cancer Foundation?
It's been a while, man

@thread
the AGDQ guys took channels that had Highlights or just cuts. Also, banning people out of the blue because of "reasons". Hell, the OGs that basically made the thing like Bonesaw and Trihex got kicked for nothing

Who wants to see good content about it

Also, those videos are old. That's how long the AGDQ is being the worst. One can argue that they have a cause, but the execution is shitty

Maybe a bad take, But , Is it ok to celebrate mental illness as the norm now? I feel like every year GDQ gets worse.

Health wise, This poor man Matty has lost fingers , an arm , leg. Incredibly strong to be there but my God I can't believe how sad that was to see.

Yeah I felt really bad watching Matty, cause all I was thinking was why is this dude on camera, cause it's hard to watch him as a viewer.

First few runs were fun to watch, and CovertMuffin has great energy but the first whackadoo can't shut up on his bench. Big dude who thinks they are a girl, and whatever you do you, but I'd be upset as a woman hearing what these guys think women sound and dress like. Run is fine, although I got bored playing Ori, let alone watching it.

There's a slightly mini version of Gorlock the Destroyer sitting in on the Astrobot speedrun. GDQ never disappoints these days.

Yeah I had to mute the run due to a mix of that gigantic dudechick never missing a chance to speak from the bench and me not playing AB yet. All the nutjobs really struggle with allowing anyone else to voice a thought when they are up there. They just seem to have to fill any silence with their voice even if it doesn't relate to what is happening. Super annoying

Some games that I might be interested in checking out once they're uploaded to Youtube. Unfortunately the only game that has runners that I know and like this time around is Super Metroid. Which, by the way, will probably be quite entertaining as map randomizer races are pretty fun.

Having a race as an event closer is a good idea to end up with a bang. Much better than the hours-long FF run they used to have.
But, they could do something other than Super Metroid at this point. I know, save/ kill the animals brings in a lot of donations. They could still do SM in another segment and wrap up things with a different game.

I don't disagree but I bet it's consistent placement at the end is based on how much money it brings in specifically as a closer compared to other games they've tried and not just for the save/kill donation war. I do recall them having SM earlier in the schedule a few years ago.

Personally I really enjoyed the 2d Mario races in the past and think it'd do pretty well as the closing run.

Yep, I tuned out of this years ago.

I stopped watching years back when they went just weird. I do like the commentary for certain runs talking about new tricks and stuff for certain games and lore tho.

Yeah I don't get why they have gone so far off the rails with the bans and selections. Commentary and hosts can make or break entire blocks. Day 1 was pretty good outside of the nut on commentary in Ori and the one in Astro Bot. I turned it on today for background noise and kinda watching and the crazies were displayed in full force and the commentator was full blown yelling trans rights every chance they got. Really took me out of the run (Already forgot the game...)

Just watched the Sonic Origins run, and I'm not 100% sure but I think the runner was a dude turned chick (They were wearing a mask so couldn't see the adams apple) but I got a chuckle that their handle was Snowballsmb. At least they were actually informed pretty well about the game they were running and ran it well. Usually the crazies are some of the worst runners of the marathons.

*Edit* Right after I post they start Have a Nice Death with two of the dudest fake chicks I've ever seen. Why do these almost or actually middle aged men think that the reason they are single is because they are the wrong sex? And if they TRULY believe they aren't the right sex, I don't think stuffing themselves into a dress is a better start then doing something about their major bald spots from being the hardcorest of the neckbeards

Metroid Prime is not a particularly fun speedrun to watch. Halo speedruns mog this.
Sometimes the runner makes the whole difference

Also, Halo is proof that things can go really bad to the point that they named the "Halo rule";
-The Halo rule: This was a rule at CGDQ, but I didn't mention it for AGDQ because I didn't think it was a problem. It goes without saying that I was wrong. If your run is bad, it will be mercy killed. There is no objective way of determining whether a run is bad, but the only one that really deserved to be mercy killed was Halo (this is throughout all 3 marathons BTW). It was less of a speedrun and more of a fight for survival, there were numerous mistakes, and Cody said he hadn't practiced the game in 2 years. So there's your guideline. If people are unsure, Breakdown, romscout, and I have the final say on mercy-killing. The Raen rule addendum also applies to mercy killing.

For those who don't know, Cody Miller was a "speedrunner of Halo" and subscribe to have a run at then Classic Games Done Quick (2010). Things started weird to say the least, but hey, everyone can have bad juju, right?! Eventually he showed that he didn't knew the shortcuts, died a lot, lowered the difficulty, still died a lot, used old techniques... the run was way too long to be considered "done quick" and no one was having fun. It was sad

Sonic Origins put me off by being NG+ but it had some good stuff. Didn’t know you could skip the Sky Sanctuary bosses.

Why are they asking the Last of Us speedrunner about the tv show? He just came to run a videogame for charity lol
