Acclaimed 'Mech Series Goes Handheld with All-New Touch Screen Features

EDISON, N.J., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Majesco Entertainment Company (Nasdaq: COOL) today announced MechAssault(R): Phantom War for the Nintendo DS will ship to stores later this year. The first handheld installment of the critically acclaimed series, MechAssault: Phantom War features popular franchise elements while utilizing the Nintendo DS touch screen to deliver a new level of control and maneuverability.

"MechAssault: Phantom War fuses the best game play elements from the series with new features that take advantage of the unique mechanics of the Nintendo DS," said Ken Gold, vice president of Marketing for Majesco Entertainment. "The touch screen lets players intuitively 'touch' the cockpit controls to hack into giant 'Mechs, eject pilots, switch weapons and check battle techniques."

Developed by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment, MechAssault: Phantom War brings the future of interstellar combat to today's handheld gamers in a third-person futuristic shooter. Players assume the role of a MechWarrior, an elite fighter trained to control the ultimate war machine of the 32nd century ... the BattleMech. Gamers experience fast-action, 3D 'Mech combat on the top screen, while the lower touch screen positions them inside the cockpit at the controls.

Exciting MechAssault: Phantom War features include:

* Commandeer over 20 types of vehicles, including 'Mechs, Tanks, Turret and BattleArmor;

* Wreak havoc on the enemy and environment with an arsenal of powerful, fully upgradeable weapons;

* Brand new story drawn from the popular BattleTech series which spawned highly successful games like MechWarrior & MechCommander for the PC and MechAssault & Crimson Skies for the Xbox(R) video game system.

* Use the touch screen to sneak into enemy territory, hijack enemy 'Mechs and wield the most secret weapon in the Inner Sphere;

* Wireless multiplayer combat for up to four players simultaneously;

* Master 24 single player campaigns across four planets and three exciting multiplayer game types;

* Unlockable 'Mechs, maps and cheats enhance gameplay.

Great. Never played MA, but I liked Miyamoto's Submarine Demo with that indirect gameplay. (I assume MA to be quite indirect, too!?)

Perfect for the DS Hardware Setup! No WiFi but okay.

Mech Assault is incredibly arcade-y, run-and-gun style gameplay.

You're thinking of Mech Warrior, which is where MA's origins are from, and is the more simulation-like game.

Dammit the mechwarrior whore in me is gonna have to buy it. I am just going to go in with low expectations.

Please surprise me MechAssault DS!

Nintendo really needs to start pushing devs to get involved with NWFC, the way Microsoft does with LIVE.

I can't decide if this game is going to be crippled by DS' questionable 3D, or made even more awesome by a touch-screen cockpit.

I think after Metroid Prime Hunters, which use voice chat before and after games, we might see more games with better online interface on the DS (Hunters as a small influence)

Yea. I don't care about functionality if no one even supports it. There are a lot of games getting released and announced that could benefit greatly from NWFC support, that go without it. Why? Nintendo needs to push them to support it.

It seems like the Japanese developers are starting to jump on a bit more. Bleach has Wifi support, and that new lost magic RPG has wifi support also. Hopefully more and more will start using it.

Nintendo dosen't seems to have a online strategy except thats its free and wireless.

Looks pretty good. I hope the frame rate holds up. The lower screen could use some more style, too.

And the lack of NWFC support is what we're talking about.

What a waste of the second screen. Oh well, they still put it to a better use then Marvel Nemesis did. Any unmarked screens?

Edit: NVM. Dennis got some already. :lol

Besides the fact that Zipper Interactive developed MechWarrior 3/4 and the PC version of Crimson Skies, I don't think there is any...

Bleh, I was hoping for an extensive mech HUD for the touchscreen part. That would have been wicked.

This is the kind of game I wanted for the DS before the DS was the DS. What the hell were they thinking by not making it online, though? Somebody hack this shit!
