Bad press for Nintendo DS?

Is the DS a stop gap?

Stop gaps are bad for consumers.

Game Boy 2 will kill a lot of consumer good will for Nintendo if it comes too soon.

People keep saying that Nintendo is taking the cheap and easy way out by putting out unconventional features in their systems and that they must be insane.

Ask yourselves this: what is the easier, safest way to go: release a product with similar features as your competition which main draw is increased power or release a product with onorthodox, untested features that may or may not take off. Which one do you choose? Why would you go out of your way to put your company at harms risk by releasing something that may or may not work if not because you have a vision for your company and the industy? Are they that stupid? Do you really believe that?

nintendo is the only hardware (console) maker willing to take risks with new or strange ideas.. and for that, i love them. of the big three, they are the only ones trying to move things in different directions, instead of keeping things on the normal slope. videogame hardware would/will become very boring without them.

[A trilogy of fallacious arguments]

1) No. Although one or two titles on the list may end up being cancelled (which is a fact of life; some PSP titles will be announced and canned as well), the vast majority of them are absolutely going to be released. Because...

2) Also no. The 32X was a total and complete bomb, not to mention the fact that developers were just sort of making things up as they went along when they announced all those titles.

3) A "no" hat trick. DS games by and large won't be ported anywhere else because they're programmed to use two screens and touch sensitivity.

Game Boy Color was a stopgap. I think there were a few rumblings of discontent, but it sho' didn't stop people from buying a GBA.

Two years between hardware releases, while seeming short, is actually long enough from a will-the-consumer-care standpoint. If a new portable hits in Christmas 2006 from Nintendo it'll be accepted.

How long was GBC out before the GBA arrived? It didn't felt long. Was it 2 years?

What about SCEE's Eyetoy or Singstar? Or their experiments with infrared motion tracking for PS3? That doesn't count?

Enough with the "Nintendo innovates" stuff. My god, we'd still be playing on fucking carts if Nintendo was the sole console maker out there. What have they done that's so different? 4-controller ports is certainly nice, as was Virtual Boy, oh wait. It's only happened recently since it doesn't appear they can compete with a Sony or MS in terms of pure horespower that they go with the alternative-style to playing, a revolution.

What is it with this need for innovation? Do people not understand that the concept of a fat ass popping a game into a console, sitting on his couch and proceeding to play through a TV hasn't really changed that much? It's not going to either.

Bored with gaming, feel there's not enough innovation? It's time to find a new hobby, because there's a whole generation of lil' buggers that 3d is still fresh for, and will still be living it up once things get "stale" for us.

As some here can attest to, I've gone from a staunch supporter of the DS against the growing tide of bashers, to someone who feels disconnected from the Nintendo Difference.

In terms of wasted potential so far, the DS makes me ill. I wanted to be able to try new things and play new ways out of the box. Instead I got a mostly ill-thought out launch period list of games, that after purchasing accomplished very little new, or even fun for that matter.

So my eyes shifted to the PSP. Which in terms of innovation seems to aim much lower but IMO aims far higher in terms of actually releasing worthwhile games.

No I haven't played many of the PSP titles but as I've played 80% of all DS games, including the bigger imports, the PSP has a sure shot to eclipse my DS play experience in short order.

I guess after enduring the rise and fall of the Gamecube, I don't have much Nintendo leeway to give. They are back to NEUTRAL in my eyes, and have to prove every desicion isn't the wrong one.

Sad in some respects as in the past they got the benefit of the doubt to say the least.

In the end, the fact that they have lost the support of someone like me, I can imagine Joe Gamer has to be hit pretty hard in NA lately. I'm wondering what the media blitz and mindshare engineering that SONY excels at will do to them after getting a sour mouthful of the DS.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but the press and their opinions on the DS can choke on my nuts. I love my DS. Their opinions aren't going to change that.

And lists of announced but distant games are pretty worthless.

I remember how awesome the 32X's list of upcoming games was, but the 32X was a stop gap and died too soon for any of those games to materialize.
I dunno, they give a good idea of what to expect for the platform. They're a great indicator of publisher confidence. I wonder if PS2 would've sold quite as well without the distant promises of stuff like Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Gran Turismo 3, Star Ocean 3, Resident Evil 4 and others?

What's truly worthless is any comparison between 32X and DS given the overwhelming industry and consumer support for the latter. Not to mention timing being totally off, 32X and Saturn released the same month in Japan and Saturn was actually announced first.

2.5 years. It was actually going to be just a year or so but GBC was selling so well Nintendo decided to hold off GBA launch. I expect DS is in the same position, how soon we get the next GB depends on how well it sells.

i like games. i like having my traditional console. and i will welcome a non-traditional console with open arms. i think nintendo is trying to find an alternative way to play games.. but not necessarily replace the traditional way.

Remains to be seen. How many of the games on these lists have actually been seen and are more than just an announcement?

I agree with this. I am enjoying my DS durrently and I hope that Nintendo continues to support it. That said, I also have prepaid for a psp with lumines; if Nintendo releases a new handheld I will likely just stick with my psp. I would imagine that if other consumers see Nintendo releasing a new system so soon after DS they would be more likely to just choose Sony's product instead.

And let me just say one more thing about Fox, and then I'm done with this thread (And I do like the guy): It's best that he's no longer in the business because his attitude sucks. He hates the DS and hopes Nintendo loses a ton of money because he hates it. That's a shit attitude through and through. You think there aren't a lot of film critics out there who hate genres aimed at kids, etc. Just because a company releases a product that's not aimed at you, the critic, doesn't mean you should get all pissy and wish they'd lose a bucket of money (Because not everyone is a white, elitist, adult male). The DS truly does seem like a third pillar aimed at casuals, and yes, that means they should release a GBE this year. But that statement is as asinine as a film critic saying he hates Disney and wishes their films would all fail. It serving a market, so STFU and be professional about it.

Edit: And I don't care what ethnicity Fox is, because that's not the point.

???? He wrote a personal blog post saying it was safe for him to say the DS is a piece of shit because he's not a professional journalist. Where does professionalism come in? Game journalists are the ones who have to pretend it's interesting and by and large do. That's the nature of the industry. Seemingly, he'd just like to see them punished in the marketplace for pushing such a lackluster product. Why couldn't one make that argument about anything you dislike? Disney is a bland bohemoth, I'd like to see their films fail. That's opining. And since when do critics have to conform to popular taste or fanboys desire? You'd prefer the critic to simply give a seal to conformity?

And wtf does the whole white, elitist male thing mean? Does the DS represent the oppressed and minority? That's fucking stupid. I see no reason why it's assumed that the casual gamer, the minority gamer, the non-white gamer should have to play boring games. Everything produced "serves a market" or it dissapears. That doesn't have a whit to say about it's aesthetic value or the critics function. Disagree with his opinion by all means but I think you lack understanding of any sort of critical value. He's not fucking Reggie, paid to endorse the damn thing.

*gaming journalism* is way overrated imho.

it's easily bought and sold.

magazines needs ads to survive....reviews come into play...we know what happens.

i mostly read them when i'm on the crapper.

rent before you buy, don't ever base a purchase on a magazine review.

i love my ds. played mario 64 ds all night long at work. :lol

i understand your point, but im happy for one of the three big companies to go ahead and try something like the DS. before the DS i didnt like many things nintendo, i own all three consoles and while i love the big exclusives ie metroid zelda ect i dont buy any multiplatform games ie nfs ect, for the gamecube. in saying that when nintendo released the ds i picked one up import, and since have loved it, and im glad one of the companies is trying different things, and since has mad me like nintendo more, other than hate on it. oh well thats just my opinion, if microsoft DS had have come out, the "positiveness" from me wouldve gone to them

How come they still haven't announced Tony Hawk DS yet?

I mean...they had the series ready for the GBA and GCN launches due to close partnerships with Nintendo - and not the DS?

Something just doesn't seem right here.

The DS is still waiting on some key software releases that will cause mass hysteria and a full-on-love-affair with the machine.

Speaking of good DS games, I was quite shocked to read in the latest EGM the #2 game on The Hot Ten.

I got the DS the first day out of impulse and have been disappointed by it. Wario Ware Touched just isn't my kind of game and I beat Mario 64 DS (great game, the added content was very nice). I have to wait until the 14th now to get Yoshi. Then after that, wait some more time for Bomberman (which looks killer, I'm glad they got rid of the 3D, it was terrible looking), and if its better than those crappy videos, Rayman DS. It seemed like the best time to get a DS would be this fall when bigger games like Mario Kart, Advance Wars, Viewtiful Joe, and Dynasty Warriors would come out.

I'm still going to stand by the DS though. I think the same people who hate the DS are going to eat their words next year when things really get going...hopefully. If not, who cares. Its not like I don't have console games to play in the meantime.

Edit: I don't think the DS is a stop gap. Its just a PSP preventative. You know, Nintendo wants to make sure Sony doesn't get one ahead of them so Nintendo can bide their time for the DS. However I think they'll support it probably for at least three years. I really doubt that Nintendo will release the new GBA in 2005. Maybe get new word of GBA2 specs or maybe a few screens. 2006 or 2007 is likely. That could be another reason why not too many developers are pledging more support for the DS. The list of upcoming DS games are pretty good though. I'll get my money's worth out of the thing.

The DS *is* a stop-gap. Why do people think it was labelled as a 3rd pillar to begin with and not a part of the Game Boy line?

The DS is selling not because of games. It is because of what makes the features of the system different. Mario 64 wireless is enough replay value to sucker in people for the next 6 months. Pictochat could be the closest thing to a gamer-based MSN system.

The point is that obviously the DS does not need GAMES to sell. Think PS2-Japan.

The handheld wars will be fought based on features first, games second.

Activision asked VV to do it but they declined, wanting to do Spider-Man 2 instead. I'm guessing Activision skipped this year then since they probably couldn't get a team to do anything decent by launch time.
