Baldur's Gate 3 now runs natively on Steam Deck thanks to a single Larian engineer who started the project after hours because he 'really wanted a smoother version of the game on Steam Deck'

As for why Larian went to the effort of releasing a Steam Deck native build of Baldur's Gate 3 a full two years after the game's 1.0 release—and five years after its early access debut—Larian boss Swen Vincke said it was simply a matter of "passion."

"The Steam Deck native build was initiated by a single engineer who really wanted a smoother version of the game on Steam Deck and so he started working on it after hours," Vincke wrote on X. "When we tried it out, we were all surprised by how good it felt and so it didn't take much to convince us to put our shoulders behind it and get it released.It's this type of pure passion for their craft that makes me fall in love with my developers over and over again. Considering myself very lucky to have people like him on my team. Try it out!"

I hope this single engineer gets more than a damp handshake for his voluntary work, which is now being sold more or less indirectly.
 
Goes to show how much potential performance is left on the table for some games when it comes to the Steam Deck, as it is using translation layers that will add some overhead.
 
I'd love to see how it runs now but honestly the biggest problem I had was the screen size. The game is just much better expierienced on a TV or monitor.
 
Just shows that actually good devs can do much in a reasonably time, when given that time (or sacrificing their free time). While the game struggled quite much to get everything on Series S, some motivated steamdeck fan among them felt "the regular Proton path is not good enough, I'll port that thing myself" and just made it happen.

Games still run better in steamos even with translation layers than win 11. But yeah native is definitely better.
 
I wonder if this is really noticeable.

I'm a bit surprised by the tone of the article, cause I have several hours of the game on my Steam Deck, up until act 3, and ran great most of the time (up until act 3)
 
These guys are so insufferable. I hope they get an award at the Keighley's for optimizing their game this year. What a triumph of the human spirit.

What ? Do you have examples? I'm genuinely curious. I was under the impression that it was a clunky mess but I've never really looked into it.

They are probably preparing Switch 2 version.

Switch 1 version would be trying to beat Dark Souls 1 on PS3 for developers.
