Baldur's Gate III | OT | Bear in Mind, Your Choices Have Consequences

Finally made some good progress in the last 3 (fucking hell that went fast) hours

  • Made it to the Last light Inn and saved Isobel
  • Ambushed the Drider and freed the Pixie
  • Made it to Moonrise Towers and met the awesome General Thorm, what a good impression of a major bad guy huh
  • Now off to find Balazhor, who I've heard is a bitch of a fight
Oh I also found some weird Gold woman/Dark Souls boss, but fuck fighting an enemy with 900hp right now, so reload and move on lol
 
So you have to take a non obvious pathway, in a completely optional area, to maybe find the massive, ancient, mythical forge hidden underground... Which of course you manually use, complete with making the lava flow, and smashing down on the crucible.

This game is just the GOAT. I've found more new (good) content just replaying act 1 than most games have total.

The Gold woman is actually incredibly easy. Look around and try again.

Actually turned out to be a good dungeon, once I solved the First trial I realised what the devs were going for and taught me some skills I'd overlooked, like stealth and ungrouping the team (before this I kept everyone together)

Even solved the Silent Libary and got Shadowheart some cool new armor and a Spear, freed another Devil and now down to the bottom of this place for a relic
 
Finally finished it at 3am in the morning last night.

Man, what a ride that was! Act III definitely is the weakest out of all Acts for me. I think it is paced badly, a little bloated beyond what was necessary and could/should have been at least split into 2 seperate parts. But its also arguably full of the most important events and happenings in the entire game, and I think the game managed to land a lot of the big moments successfully.

Sadly, it is also the part where all of the bugs really start to add up in a bad way and where it feels like the game falls into repetition in terms of mechanics. Feels like by Act 3 you kinda 'figured it out', meaning you have your go-to party setup and ways to handle stuff. Everytime I was forced to mix up my party I felt annoyed, simply because I had to make redundant characters work for only a couple encounters before putting them back on the shelf for my regulars. The terrible party management when it comes to equipment, items and skills really adds up negatively here.

Close to the end it started to pick back up for me however, so I enjoyed the last couple hours leading up to the big bad. Especially Raphael and everything leading up to him was some of the best parts of the game. He was also my favorite character in the entire game I believe. Really hope we get more of him at some point in the future.

All in all I would rate Act I a 9.5/10, Act II a 8 and Act III a 7.5. Add another 0.5 points to each Act were the game in a better technical state and had more polish and QoL fixes included. Especially the crashes started adding up frustration.

Took me roughly 85 hours all in all. I don't think my social life will accept another playthrough anytime soon, so maybe a couple years down the line I will go for another playthrough as Dark Urge with the inevitable Complete/GOTY edition.

Great game for sure, but in my opinion does not quite match the hype around it in this state. Feels like a lot of reviews were done by people who stopped halfway through Act II.
 
Made some progress in Act 2 now

  • Shars Dungeon done
  • Balazhor is dead, that was a weird yet fun fight, I threw Ice down and all the enemies slipped, easy mop up and I psuhed a load off the cliff lol
  • Saved the
  • Nightsong
    it was a great cutscene of that as well
  • Now back to deal with a certain General
 
What the actual fuck game, so in the Moonrise tower and defeated a tough fight with some allies, but now accused of Murder AFTER the fight! The fuck is that glitch

I did save after the fight (after having to do it twice) but I have no idea if they are gonna accuse me again once I see them, on the flip side near the End of Act 2 and everyone is Level 7 and stronger!

Could be you accidentally finshed off a weakened ally with a spell that lingered after the battle. I had something similar happen to me earlier in act 2 and had to redo a section to avoid it.

Later, though, I got so powerful that I just thought fuck 'em all. There's no higher authority in this game than me, Shadowheart, Lae'zel and Wyll, and anyone who disagrees is getting wrecked. Pretty much everyone who gave me aggro swiftly became dead, which solves a whole lot of problems.

Possibly, but I wasn't using AoE attacks towards the end, the only thing I did was go to loot a body of an enemy, its kinda bad design to do that though, technically an ally slipping on Ice I put there would count as a betrayal I guess

Ice would probably do it. The thing that turned people against me was some moron walking over a spell that made tentacles sprout out of the ground. All the enemies were dead, I'd saved him and his useless friends, then he gets tentacled and they all turn hostile.

With hindsight I should have offed them all on the spot - they were Harpers, and not one of them survived the fight at Moonrise anyway, so it would have been a mercy killing.
 
Finally beat it last night, 105 hours. Unfortunately I was in displacer beast form when the killing blow landed on the brain, and the game wasn't really prepared for that, it kept me in that form for the ending cutscenes and it was kinda broken, clipping, incorrect camera angles, general awkwardness. It was kinda funny I suppose, these emotional goodbyes and I'm just a big monster cat staring impassively.
 
So General Thorm is a little bitch isn't he? Lae'Zel rolled him that hard that Nightsong didn't even get her turn lol, I think I'm onto the end of Act 2 now and tbh I wonder where the story is going as it looks to be ramping up to an end of sorts

That was the last boss that gave me any trouble whatsoever. If you've developed a winning strategy you'll probably cruise through act 3 unless you turn up the difficulty.

Yea, Lae'Zel Tanking everything Shadowhearts Guardian Angels and Lighting Wrath destroys the field, Gale and My Character (a Ranger) with their summons is very overwhelming on the field
 
The game runs at just under 30fps at 4K resolution on my 3060 laptop. I was actually tempted to run it this way since it looks so crisp. The game doesn't really need to be 60fps. I wimped out and switched to 1080p, though.

I just realized that I could run it at 1440p at 60fps instead. I wonder if that would look worse on a 4K TV than 1080p.

edit: I am a fool. I just noticed DLSS. I have never actually used DLSS before, so it didn't even cross my mind. DLSS balanced at 4K gives me around 50fps.

Act 3 starts with some twists huh? This is getting good, a solid 9/10 for me so far, considering the only RPG's tend to be Final Fantasy and Action RPG's like Mass Effect, yea I'm enjoying this one a lot
 
I don't know how act 3 was before the patches, but I should be around mid-way through and it has been brilliant so far. It's even better than act 2 for me. So much content and all of it meaningful. I was very pleasantly surprised with some returning characters/storylines as well as the continuation of quests from act 1 I had almost forgotten about. Some pretty tough decisions to make too.

Ugh yea, had to make 2 difficult ones now, I do like how the 3 Elder gods Chosen are set up, though its weird as my Characters name is Orin as well, so it throws me when the bad Orin is on screen as well

What does Japanese and/or J-RPG lovers think about BG3. An actually well made, VERY western in philosofy Rpg, based on D&D dice baced rules?

Maybe make a thread.

Though JRPG fans have seen games like these before. If they prefer JRPGS, this won't change their mind I suspect.
 
160 hours in, probably 3/5 thru Act 3. Still have to do prison, mech factory, Raphael, whatever temple is under the sewers.
Definitely game of the year, probably of the last 2 or 3 years.
Altho now that gold is no issue and I get no exp, momentum has gone down. I can't wait to roll a Dark Urge or do any kind of evil playthru at the very least.
 
Does anyone by chance have a safe file of a male half elf, non dark urge, around the start of ACT 3?

My pc got hacked, panicked and reinstalled windows and formatted my drivers without backing up the save nor cloud as it was bugged at launch....

I know this is gonna suck, but you might be better just restarting and trying a different character + choices. There's SO many variables at play in BG3 that whatever save you get off someone is probably gonna feel really disjointed. There will probably be interactions that make no sense whatsoever to you.
 
I just watched the Dungeons and Dragons movie and was shocked when it started dropping BG3 lore and locations

My dumbass not knowing dungeons and dragons is a full world and lore and that BG3 is based on it :messenger_tears_of_joy:
 
So some solid progress now

  • Got to the Temple of Bhaal - This was awesome as I invis'ed my way through the place to get here, there was a hard fight that was timed and ranged that I was stuck on until I thought about just going invisable and walking past to the next waypoint, that worked!
  • All Level 11 now, a lot of enemies do not stand a chance against me now
  • I've decided on killing Orin first before handling Gortash, there is a quest to disable the Steel watchers first though, that could be useful
Oh yea, my Character is called Orin as well, which can be confusing lol

Coincidentally, I was just thinking about this last night. This game confirmed my suspicion that I vastly prefer Japanese games. This game is too open for me. It doesn't limit my choices enough. I prefer the tight, narrative-driven ride that JRPGs provide. JRPGs tell their story. BG3 tells a story.

BG3 tells a variation of a Story, I find that JRPG's do tell their story like you said, but Western RPG's often have better stories in the background, often unrelated to the Main Quest (see: Starfield and Skyrim for great examples of that vs say Like a Dragon or Final Fantasy)

Pretty much this, I've tried to be good, but its fun breaking the law!


So anyway, Orin is done, dead, killed, the easiest boss fight in the game with Gale and Lae'Zel doing the big work here (Gale with Magic Missle V to break the Unstoppable buff, Lae'Zel for the big damage and 4 hits per turn, she melted) though I will say this boss fight is pure bullshit, not cause of Orin directly, but the cultists after she goes down, why? Well heres what they do:

  • Go Invis EVERY turn which cannot be counterspelled
  • attack twice with a bleed Dagger
  • even when they are revealed, they run away and proc invis again
  • Are somewhat immune to AoE attacks
What I ended up doing is making the Floor Icy and used Shadowhearts Spirit guardians to trick them into being damaged if they got close or they'd slip and lose a turn, they had little HP (fuck I remember when I considered over 10HP on a enemy to be a lot) so I could handle it

Now we have 1 more Enemy to finish, Gortash, but first I have to deal with these tricky Steel Watchers....
 
Steel Watch disabled in a fun but tough quest, though the overhyped Steel Titan boss was a pushover, again Lae'Zel is definitely my favorite character in this, shes just that damned good!

As I was saying, there is a certain Tyrant to eliminate next

Now, finally, onto Gortash, with what I gained down there, we're unstoppable!
 
I don't understand this game. I am literally unable to progress at present. Every combat encounter ends with me getting rozzled within a few turns. I was advised to do some of the main quest to level up but its the same scenario.

I can understand why everyone enjoys the game, the narrative, characters etc but I'm finding it up be impenetrable from a gameplay perspective.

Don't be afraid to turn down he difficulty, you can change it at any second without losing any progress, even in your current battle.

I played on the lowest difficulty for awhile to start, and when I had the mechanics down I swapped back to normal and it felt great. But even knowing the game well and being decent at it, I've come across a couple fights where I just had to lower the difficulty to get through it before turning it up again.

Lower the difficulty.

I get ya...the game doesn't really do anything to explain the combat mechanics. I mean there's literally not a single quest line I can complete right now. It's weird.

Definitely a learning curve game, it made me love it even more when it all did click, but obviously not everyones cup of tea.

If your quest log is looking like an impassable wall right now, my best advice is honestly just pick a direction and start walking. The 'quests' don't really seem to work the same as other games and they are constantly overlapping or being updated. I've never walked for long without finding something interesting or a new questline to pick up.

Best of luck getting over the hump.

Split up your party and position them in advantageous positions before a fight, so they aren't all bunched together. Hide some of them so they can surprise the enemy after the fight starts. Those were the key things I found that made the combat really click (and extremely easy after a while).

Other things include distributing health potions among all fighters before the battle, and making sure any special arrows you've picked up are given to archers instead of sitting uselessly in your main character's inventory. Also put your best archer on high ground, right click enemies to see what your chances of actually hitting them are, etc. Treat it like a turn-based strategy game, which is what the fighting basically is.
 
And done, possibly my game of the year if not for Zelda

That last boss is tricky and was down to just my character after many reloads, but yea all done!!
