I'm so accustomed to google, and know so many of the small features that it has, that even if MS or apple make something better, I'm probably not going to use it for the same reason I don't use linux or OSX. I am too lazy to learn something new

It's like McDonalds saying they will catch up with Subway. They aren't really even competing with each other directly. I don't get it.

Is it that MS wants the "rep" that Google has? Is that what they are after? That will NEVER happen. If Google becomes stale, techboys will just latch onto another company not named Microsoft.

Well.. here's the thing... I think Google is doing it's best imitation of encroaching on MS products and services without trying to LOOK like it's doing that.

I think once they release a browser though(and that rumor resurfaces every year) the jig is gonna be up though... which is why I think they are holding out on that...

Insane For Sony
Google just seems to be making things that work incredibly well, at least in their most important online services. Actually, they are one of the very few companies that offer online services that are actually just as fast and efficient to use as something you'd run locally. That's something MS has yet to do, IMO. Hotmail is slow and junky compared to Gmail, for example. Also, google just seems to have people capable of thinking up some completely crazy stuff and making it useful - like that new translation project they are making by scanning the UN human-translated books, or the 3D street mappings that they want to do. That's not to say Google are failproof. Their desktop search tool is stupid and that web speed enhancer tool was a complete fiasco for example.

McDonalds and Subway do compete - they compete in the fast food industry

Microsoft wan't to tap into the business model on webservices (which they heavily covet) and advertising which has Googles stock UP NEAR $300 US/share!

That was my point. They are in the same industry, but not really competing for the same type of customer. Wendy's and BK is more direct competition for McDonalds. Whereas Oracle and Linux are more direct competition for Microsoft.

But, after reading the article I see that MS wants what Google has. I guess it is commendable for them to try and take on a company after lagging so far behind it. They have done this before, so it doesn't surprise me they are cocky enough to think they can do it again.

If I'm buying fast food - Subway is a choice for my dollars as is Moes, Burger King, Popeyes, as is any other fast food restaurant.

To quote one of the posters at the original article "Ballmer Will Catch West Nile Before He Catches Google.... " Google is executing masterfully across an absurd number of front SIMULTANEOUSLY and doing a damn good job at it.

Their translation tool needs something like a user editable drop box system...

so when the translation tool comes across a word with multiple meanings depending on the context, it'll present instead of a single word, a drop down box of correct alternate meanings...

users can then go in there and select or even add the relevant words, putting them into a database and then ranking them in terms of how different translations stack up against each other.

Also, the users can select several contextual meanings to the page to be translated, and the words are automatically defined according to that context... but still allow for the user to change them accordingly.

Of course, the translation interface would default to giving users plain text of the highest ranked translation of the site, but would be like viewing pictures, with the google toolbar uptop, giving options to contextualize/edit the text, view other translations of the text and what not.

Eventually, over enough time, most established websites will be relatively accurately translated into most languages.

Google has become a verb. How the hell can you compete with something that popular?

I love google. I've been using it since 2000 or whenever it was first starting up.

as long as my website ranks better in MSN I can't hate but take that same rank and put it on google you get a huge boost of traffic... MSN does not get the traffic google does.

I disagree, Google's desktop search is better than the search function that comes with windows IMO.

"Well, if anyone thinks innovation is done in search, you're wrong. Does anyone here really believe search is going to look like it does now in 10 years?" he asked attendees.

Before they go and reinvent websearches, the better fix their own Windows search first. The default search is atrocious. I can never find anything, even when I know exacty where it is.

This 3rd party search, which looks very much like the old windows search, is far more robust.
