I have many Japanese friends, whenever you talk to them about school uniforms and related stuff they'll tell you how much their decision to enter a specific school was influenced by the uniform they wanted to wear. Of course, if you didn't pass the entrance examinations there's not much you could do about it.

Uniforms in general are kind of a big deal there.
