What is Banished?

Banished is a city building strategy game that starts out with a small band of villagers, exiled into the procedurally generated wilds, with only a small cart of supplies to accompany them. You must keep the population alive by building them a community and living off the land while finding ways to feed and clothe your people. Survival is the goal, and while the summers can be pleasant the winters can be very harsh. Hunt and forage for food, grow crops, fish, trade for goods you can’t find. Collect materials to build houses, blacksmiths, sawmills, roads, and many other buildings. Expand the village as people are born, grow, work jobs (twenty different professions), have more children, get old, and die.

However, actions have consequences. Cutting down trees will lower the deer population. Newly planted trees take time to grow, but many herbs can only be found in old forests. The soil in planted fields will deteriorate if farmed for too many seasons in a row. Fish too hard in a good spot and kill off the fish population. Choices made to keep your people alive must be carefully balanced with the risk of death.

The game does not have any skill trees nor gating of any kind. Build any structure whenever you want, as long as you have collected the resources for construction. Money does not exist in Banished, it has no value out in the wilderness. Goods have value and can be traded for other necessities, things like seeds, tools, food, and livestock. There’s no one way to play the game “correctly”, and every map is different (although each map has a seed value allowing you to replay or trade map seeds with others). The only factors in whether your people live or die are the choices you make as their leader. Will they flourish while growing into a large community, or will they die in the cold of winter by freezing or starving to death?

Banished was completely created by one person, Luke Hodorowicz. He did the game design, the programming, the music, and the art and modeling, over a period of three years.

This is the SimCity fix I have been waiting for in a long time.

I am still shocked that one guy made this, and it only needs 150 MB.

Looking forward to it. Been following this beast for a very long time and happy to see the amount of people who are in the same camp.

seems interesting. Amazing work for a single guy. Give him a small team (or really just an artist) and a higher budget and we have AAA building sim.

Or just leave him to this own devices riding upon the profitability of Banished to create a more structured sim. There's no need to bloat shit up in order to capture the ridiculous publisher dream that is "AAA" production since that rubbish is nothing more than a marketing ruse.

AAA or A or B just means the amount of "budget" my friend. ;)

I'll make this a Christmas present for the wife, she will lose YEARS in this. She still loves playing Caesar/Pharaoh/Zeus from back in the day.
Looks amazing, love the use of cheevos too.

From the FAQ:

Can I mod the game?
A mod kit is is being worked on and will be released sometime after Banished goes on sale. The initial version of the game won’t have mod support.

Excellent! You'll even be able to mod in additional languages. I think I'll do that as a fun project.

Game sounds really interesting, I just wish it didn't look so bad, reminds me of a 2002 PC game from some unknown Eastern European developer. Decent effort if one guy did it all by himself but still, part of what makes this genre interesting for me is the "Wuselfaktor", actually seeing and appreaciating what you've built. Not sure that's working here.

Is this man using somekind of sorcery?
Anyway, this looks great, definitely looking forward to it.

It looks a bit more like Anno than Settlers, so to speak. But it's still looking great, so I'll give it a chance.

It looks fine, especially for a one person job. But it could be better, and there will be mods to improve graphics when the mod tools come out.

Great OT! Is it possible to pre order already?

No way to pre-order. I really wish he had given this game early access, because it's actually been very playable for a long time now. And then I could play it right now.

Comparisons to Dwarf Fortress = I'm in!

Luke certainly drew a lot of inspiration from Dwarf Fortress, and possibly Gnomoria too. It's like a mixture of Dwarf Fortress and SimTown or Anno 1014.

Personally I think it looks amazing. Sure it's not Simcity 2013 levels of graphics or polish, but all of Maxis versus one man, well yeah there are going to be degrees of lessness going on. This is purely an Indie game.. But he's nailed the gameplay, and that's where Maxis has been failing for a long time now. I've talked to a few people who have pre-release copies of the game, and everyone so far has commented on how addicting and fluid it is. Two people mentioned the Civ vibe is very strong, that "one more turn" feeling in realtime so to speak.

I've been following the development for quite a while alredy. Only worry I have is that the game might get a bit easy once you get the basics down, but it'll still be worth the $20.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
How do we know its great? No one actually played it yet.

Subscribed for when I finally get a PC or when he ports it to Mac. Looks SO DAMN GOOD.

Why not bootcamp? That's what I'm doing, especially since it's only 150MB.

Game looks promising and I'm pretty sure the quality will be there since this is just one person's personal project as compared to a money grab by a big company.

Day one for me.
