Yeah, this is gonna be a hard pass for me. Though I'm guessing the half of the population that played with Barbie will turn out IN DROVES and push this to a billion......right? Seems like it has lots of in jokes that you'd need barbie time (or sisters with barbies) to "get".
They kinda did a similar thing with faux He-man, the very short lived "Son of Zorn" cartoon/live action show on Fox
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4798814/, showing the clash of the fantasy/play world with the real world. But I find is VERY hard to balance an ironic take on this type of thing, especially if it is critical, as the Barbie film seems to be. Ken being mysogynistic for example. He was ONLY played with by girls, he isn't a boy toy in a girls show, so if he shows any sexist views, it's because THE GIRLS PUT IT THERE. I'm trying, and FAILING, to recall any boy show that dunked on the female characters. Teila, the Sorceress, She-Ra, Baroness, Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Cheetara, Sheila and Diana, Lisa Hayes. Those women, while yeah, they were sexpot designs, were authentic, competent, and ACTION oriented. I guess there were damsel in distress types like Peach, Minmei, and whatnot but they weren't the "norm" really. That bit with Ken and the doctor just really sticks in my craw for some reason and I wonder how much of the film is like that. Shitting on Barbie as a sexist or "non-feminist" icon just won't play well, I think.
